Core-Skin-Shell:
The CORE-SKIN-SHELL principle and
the production organization that
goes with it, constitute a stable
basement on which to build further.
The aim is now to achieve efficiency
in the standard industrialization
+ high tech custom prefab
+ self construction combination in
order to cut costs and show more
consistency with our research program’s
fundamental orientation.
Collective housing:
The work about multi-storey collective
buildings initiated by the
Armadillo Box® Variations team is
definitely a research that is worth
pursuing. In his speech pronounced
during the Architecture Prize ceremony,
Glenn Murcutt himself
stressed this point out: the future
of european architecture is certainly
not oriented toward single
housing scattered in the country
side but rather toward urban collective
housing adressing the issue
of density. The question is to define
what scale is the best in order
to achieve a global balance
between spatial quality and energy
efficiency.
This direction for a new urban architecture
calls for a new definition
of the competition footprint
as well as a new outline of the building
envelope (the height being a
real issue in this respect).
The idea of a two layers envelope,
with an envelope for the actual
living space and another one for
active and passive solar systems,
is worth being looked at closely
because it could create a great
opportunity for a new solar architecture.
We hope that the SDE organization
will explore this option which
has been discussed during faculty
meetings by the end of the competition.

de contrôler et comparer les coûts,
cette option semble un bon moyen
pour fixer des limites raisonnables
et pragmatiques à la compétition.
Le mauvais côté de cette solution
réside dans le fait qu’elle risque
de priver les projets de tout investissement
innovant forcément
coûteux dans sa phase de développement.
Core-Skin-Shell :
Le principe CORE-SKIN-SHELL et le
mode de production qui l’accompagne
constituent une base solide
sur laquelle continuer à construire.
L’objectif est maintenant de
rendre efficace la trilogie production
industrielle standard + préfabrication
high tech à la demande
+ auto-construction afin d’abaisser
les coûts et de recoller à notre
problématique fondamentale de
recherche.
Habitat collectif :
Le travail sur les immeubles d’habitat
collectif à étages engagé par
l’équipe Armadillo Box® Variations
constitue une orientation de
recherche qu’il faut absolument
poursuivre. Dans son discours prononcé
lors de la remise des prix
d’Architecture, Glenn Murcutt
lui-même a insisté sur le fait que
le futur de l’architecture européenne
ne lui paraissait pas passer
par le développement de maisons
individuelles à la campagne mais
dans plutôt par des projets d’habitat
collectif en milieu urbain se
confrontant avec la question de la
densité. L’enjeu est désormais la
définition de la bonne échelle de
densité permettant d’atteindre un
équilibre global entre les qualités
spatiales et l’efficacité énergétique.
Cette orientation vers une architecture
plus urbaine implique une
redéfinition du gabarit enveloppe
constructible - au sol comme en
volume - des projets du SDE (la
hauteur constituant un point clé).
L’idée d’un gabarit enveloppe décomposé
en deux parties avec une
enveloppe pour la construction
habitée et une enveloppe pour les
