Qu’avons nous appris ?
What have we learned ?
pliances available in their respective
markets. It appears that, as
far as laundry culture is concerned,
variations are quite important according
to each european country.
The american Solar Decathlon
Rules based on a north american
common use of machines generates
an homogeneous production
of appliances on a wide territory.
Large, powerful, simple and quick
machines are commonly available
on this market. The different european
cultures have developped
a large variety of relationships
to cleanliness and housekeeping.
These differences result in very
different appliances’ performances
according to each national market.
For example, French people are
not so used to dryers and favour
washing machines providing a large
variety of programs as well as the
small size of appliances over the
time a laundry can take. Therefore,
washing machine and dryers
are designed with a completely different
agenda than the american
ones. Because of historical specific
reasons, it happens that the
spanish culture developped in the
second half of the twentieth century
is very much influenced by the
american culture when it comes
to machines and home appliances.
This probably explains why the SDE
Rules are following so closely the
SD US ones. We think that this issue
should be adressed in the next SDE
2012 Rules set and that the reality
of the european market’s diversity
should be taken into account.
Beside these problems, the freezer
the diswasher, the TV, the computer
and the DVD player worked perfectly
and scored full points.
We cannot end this conclusion without
talking about the dinner parties
which were just perfect even
if a last minute switch of dessert
caused by difficulties in finding in
Madrid the proper ingredients for a
raspberry «mille-feuille» induced a
small penalty... People had a good
