Quel est votre parcours ? | What is your background? « Je suis né en France, à Saint-Germain, et je suis arrivé aux Etats-Unis à l’âge de 24 ans. J’ai effectué toute ma scolarité en France. Pendant cinq ans, j’ai poursuivi des études scientifiques. En parallèle, j’étudiais également la musique classique. J’ai épousé Hélène avant même notre départ pour les Etats-Unis. Elle enseigne aujourd’hui l’Histoire et la Géographie à la FASNY aux élèves de 4 ème , 3 ème , Première et Terminale. Nous avons deux enfants qui ont tous deux été scolarisés à la FASNY. Julien étudie la gestion à Binghamton et Raphaëlle est en maîtrise à la London School of Economics. » | “I was born in France in St. Germain and came to the United States at age 24. All my schooling was in France. I did scientific studies for five years as well as classical music. I was married before I left France to Hélène, who teaches History and Geography at FASNY in Grades 8, 9, 11, and 12. We have two children, who both attended FASNY. Julien is studying management at Binghamton and Raphaelle is working on her Masters degree at the London School of Economics.” Qu’est-ce qui vous attache à la FASNY ? | What attracts you to FASNY? « J’adore la FASNY parce que c’est avant tout un établissement bilingue et biculturel qui a su progresser au fil des ans. Le bilinguisme et le biculturalisme n’étaient pas si développés lorsque je suis arrivé, il y a de cela 15 ans. Nous avons maintenant des activités périscolaires, des clubs, des activités sportives, un Conseil des Elèves et un véritable service communautaire, comme dans tout autre établissement américain. Nombreux sont ceux qui m’ont épaulé dans cette mission. Je pense en particulier à Helaine Couty, qui a initié le système d’orientation à la FASNY. Avant cela, j’ai travaillé six ans à la Kew Forest School de New York. Ma connaissance des systèmes scolaires français et privé américain a été un gros avantage pour moi. » | “I love FASNY because it is truly a bilingual, bicultural school. It has evolved over the years; it is much more bilingual and bicultural than it was 15 years ago when I first arrived. We have extracurricular activities, clubs, organized sports, student government, and community service—all very American school activities. When I was hired by our founders, I was brought in to help Americanize the School. Many people, such as Helaine Couty, who introduced the counseling system here, helped me to achieve this goal. Previously, I had worked for six years at the Kew Forest School in New York City, and my profile of knowing the French system and the independent school system was a big advantage.” Joël Peinado : Futur Chef d’établissement Future Head of School Comment vous est venue l’envie de devenir Chef d’établissement ? | What was the turning point that made you realize you would be interested in being head of school ? « Sans aucune hésitation, l’ouverture des classes de Première et de Terminale ! La FASNY offre désormais un cursus secondaire complet. Ceci étant fait, il me faut passer à la suite ! » | “Without question, adding the 11th and 12th grades and becoming a complete high school. Now I say, this is done, what’s next?” Quelle est votre vision pour la FASNY en termes d’infrastructures ? | What do you see on the horizon for facilities? « Nous devons conserver une approche pragmatique lorsqu’on aborde le sujet sensible des bâtiments. Il y a à peu près un an, nous avons réalisé quelques études et sommes arrivés à la conclusion qu’une capacité d’accueil de 1 000 élèves pourrait répondre à nos besoins. L’école a des contraintes géographiques. Un seul et même campus serait par ailleurs la solution idéale. Toutefois, en raison des contraintes d’espace, cette solution ne semble pas viable. Nous devons étudier toutes les options. » | “We should have a programmatic approach to our facilities situation. We did studies a year or so ago and determined that 1,000 students would be the proper number to satisfy our program needs. The School needs to stay in the region, ideally on one campus, but this may be impossible because of our space needs. We need to explore all our options.” Quelle est la raison d’une telle annonce deux ans à l’avance ? | What are the advantages of making this announcement two years in advance? « C’est un avantage incroyable de pouvoir travailler, pendant deux ans, aux côtés de Bob Leonhardt pour une transition toute en douceur. Nous allons commencer le processus de recrutement pour le poste de Directeur de l’Ecole Secondaire à l’automne. Ce laps de temps me permettra de travailler avec mon remplaçant pendant près d’une année. Dans l’intervalle, je vais m’impliquer dans le comité Finances du Conseil d’Administration et dans les efforts de levées de fonds, m’investir davantage dans le processus d’admission et m’informer sur le contenu des programmes des Ecoles maternelle et primaire. Tous les Chefs d’établissement n’ont pas, comme moi, la chance de battre le fer quand il est encore chaud. » | “It is a huge advantage to be able to work with Bob Leonhardt in this capacity for two years to allow for a smooth transition. We will be beginning the search for my replacement in the fall, which will give me a full year to work with him or her. In the meantime, I will be involved with the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees, with Admissions, get to know the Lower School and Pre-School, and become involved in fund raising. Du côté des membres du Conseil d’Administration | Board of Trustees News More than 220 parents, faculty, and staff attended the annual State of the School dinner on January 21. Board Chair Mischa Zabotin updated the community on the School’s finances, facilities, and tuition schedule for the coming year, and Head of School Bob Leonhardt gave an overview of FASNY’s accomplishments and plans on the academic and programmatic fronts. Highlighting the presentations was Mischa Zabotin’s announcement that Joël Peinado will become the new Head of School succeeding Bob Leonhardt on July 1, 2012 . Between now and then, Joël will assume State of the School Assembly and Community Dinner the title of Deputy Head, working closely with Bob to search for a new Upper Division head for 2011–12 and to ensure the smoothest possible transition. The usual question and answer period after the presentations focused on concerns from non-Francophone parents who wonder about the ease with which their young children will become fully bilingual by the time they reach high school age. Non-Francophone parents with older children offered testimonials about the success their sons and daughters had enjoyed in attaining this goal at FASNY.
