L’histoire du billard commence<br />
sous Louis XI. Souffrant de<br />
problèmes de dos, il aurait<br />
ordonné à son tourneur sur bois<br />
de réaliser une table pour jouer<br />
au croquet à hauteur d’homme.<br />
Les premiers billards étaient<br />
simplement une table sur<br />
laquelle un drap était posé. Les<br />
billes de couleurs étaient<br />
poussées à l’aide de bâtons<br />
recourbés à leur extrémité.<br />
The word ‘billiard’ may have evolved from the French word<br />
billart or billette, meaning ‘stick’, in reference to the mace, an<br />
implement similar to a golf club, which was the forerunner to<br />
the modern cue.<br />

Le premier billard date du XVII è siècle. Il se pratiquait sur des tables munies de<br />
poches avec seulement deux billes, un arceau appelé ‘‘port’’ et une quille ‘‘le<br />
roi’’. Fin du XVIII è , on développa le système de retour de billes et de poches,<br />
parfois aux formes très sculptées comme des gargouilles ou des têtes de lion<br />
qui crachaient les billes de billard de leurs gueules.<br />
On raconte que le nom du billard viendrait de son inventeur : un costumier<br />
nommé Bill, qui avait pour habitude de jouer avec les trois billes de son<br />
enseigne, en les poussant sur son comptoir avec son mètre de couturier. D’où<br />
le nom donné au jeu : Bill’s yard (littéralement ‘‘le mètre de Bill’’).<br />
