FROM THE DESK OF THE MINISTER OF INFRASTRUCTURE AND COMMUNITIES, AMARJEET SOHI Members of the Canadian Ferry Operators Association, In Budget 2016, the Government of Canada outlined its historic plan to invest more than $120 billion in public infrastructure over the next 10 years. Under this plan, the government is also implementing immediate short term investments in public infrastructure to create jobs and support clean economic growth across the country. I am pleased to let you know that, as part of this plan, passenger ferries services infrastructure is now eligible for funding under the New Building Canada Fund–Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component (NBCF–PTIC). In our discussions with provinces and territories, this was raised as a way to provide greater flexibility to address the varying infrastructure pressures in different regions of the country. This means that new construction, additional capacity, and rehabilitation of certain capitalized and fixed passenger ferry infrastructure are now eligible for federal funding when prioritized by provinces and territories. Aux termes de ce plan, le gouvernement réalise également des investissements immédiats à court terme dans les infrastructures publiques pour créer des emplois et pour appuyer la croissance économique saine partout au pays. J’ai le plaisir de vous informer que dans le cadre de ce plan, les infrastructures liées aux services de traversier pour passagers sont désormais admissibles au financement aux termes du volet Infrastructures provinciales-territoriales du Nouveau Fonds Chantiers Canada (VIPT-NFCC). Dans nos discussions avec les provinces et les territoires, on a souligné qu’il s’agit d’une façon d’offrir davantage de souplesse pour répondre aux divers besoins urgents liés aux infrastructures dans les différentes régions du pays. Cela signifie que les nouveaux projets de construction, le renforcement des c apacités et la remise en état de certaines immobilisations ou infrastructures fixes liées aux traversiers de passagers sont désormais admissibles au financement fédéral lorsqu’ils sont jugés prioritaires par les provinces et les territoires.
