Worood (Akbar) has always looked classy and she unsurprisingly took her first Group win on the
19th August at La Teste-de-Buch. She won easily in the Prix Nevadour (Gr.III PA) and can now look
to step up a level.
Impressive on her comeback on the all-weather at Pau, Worood then ran in the Qatar Prix de
l’Élevage (Gr.III PA), and paid for her earlier efforts in the finish. She finished a close fourth in this
race. This time, ridden patiently at the rear, the Charles Gourdain trained filly, relaxed well and
finished nicely up the center of the track to take victory.
As is her habit, naziq (Mahabb) led at thebeginning of the race, taking a lead of a few lengths. Her
stable companion, mabrooka (Mahabb), travelled up on the pace, whilst the eventual winner closed
the field. Naziq was still in the lead coming off the final turn. She began to weaken just as Worood
made her move. The representative of the Royal Stables of Oman pulled away and won without
being overly asked by David Morisson.
Naziq was second. princesse monlau (Munjiz), with a final effort, stole third place from Mabrooka.
This latter did not have her usual turn of foot, and the distance found her out, after finishing in nine
successive races in the first three.
The winning trainer, Charles Gourdain, had two runners on the podium. He explained: « She is a
filly who had a few growing pains after her win in February. She didn’t breathe when she finished
fourth in the Qatar Prix de l’Élevage. She is a delicate filly to ride. She needs cover so that she will
breathe and finish well. We put the hood and earplugs on for the first time. David [Morisson, ndlr]
managed to relax her in behind, and so she finished well. She has class. The objective is now the le
Qatar Arabian Trophy des Juments (Gr.I PA), the day before the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
She will go there with plenty of freshness. »
Bred by the Royal Stables of Oman, and carrying their colours, Worood is from the final French
crop of akbar (Djelfor). She is out of Starmania (Kerbella), who was third in the Prix Razzia III (Gr.III
PA). Her full sister, Alcantara, was third in the French Arabian Breeders’ (Listed PA at the time). Her
third dam, Kemia (Shawani), produced mohikan (Dormane), third in the Prix Al Sakbe (Gr.III PA).
Akbar and Starmania come from the same maternal family, that of fleur d’avril (Meke).
