Still unbeaten this year, alsaker (Af Albahar) was presented as a big rival in this Prix Burkeguy -
Wathba Stud Farm Cup (Listed PA). Tayf’s win, a few minutes ago, reinforced his nomination,
knowing that Alsaker had just won in front of him in the Qatar Derby des Pur-Sang Arabes de 4 ans
(Gr. I PA). The line seemed good and the Élisabeth Bernard trained horse proved he had to be the
favourite on the track.
He created a difference very clearly in the home straight, before winning easily. His trainer had said
before the race: “I played the speed card with Alsaker today because I would like to prepare him a
little program that goes by Istanbul and Abu Dhabi. Being on the spot, the horse is a little more
nervous than normal and I think that the 1,900m of the Prix Dormane would have been a bit long
for him. It’s why I am presenting him in this Listed.”
With a big action, tharwah (Munjiz) set a good rhythm to the race, with the future winner in his
back. Alsaker was not asked to go by Julien Augé in the first part of the straight and he came easily.
In the middle of the finale phase, the jockey asked him with the hands and the horse came up and
won by two lengths. It is finally majida (Majd Al Arab) who took the second place from Tharwah.
She well defended herself stopping her training companion djelamer (Amer) from a place on the
podium.
Élisabeth Bernard was happy with this success: “You know, when you see the program a month
earlier, you are sure you are going to win. Five minutes before the start, we are scared as hell… So
I am relieved! I thought it would be a canter, and it was the case.”
Going on shorter was a good idea: “Yes I found him a little keen but he has a great speed, that’s for
sure! For the rest, I will talk with Jean-Pierre Deroubaix. I would like to go to Turkey. I don’t know if
it is prudent for the moment and he thought more about England. I love Istanbul’s racecourse and
the Malazgirt Trophy (Gr. I PA) will be a perfect race for him. We already won it. I think we will go
there in September.”
This Prix Burkeguy-Wathba Stud Farm Cup is part of Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s
Purebred Arabian International Racing Festival. This series of the Wathba Stud Farm Cup supports
‘small’ breeders around the world. Four dates are planned in France. Three have already been
organized. The next one, the Prix Nedjari, is planned on the 27th September at Bordeaux-Le
Bouscat.
Alsaker was bred by Hassan Mousli and Nada Mousalli, just like Majida, second. His sire af albahar
(Amer) only has seven horses in France, including two black types. He stands at the Haras de
Thouars. Alsaker is a full brother to Bint Jakkarta who won the Al Rayyan Cup (Gr. I PA). This family
also counts al charif (Akbar), a brother of Alsaker, best 3yo in 2009 after his success in the Qatar
Total French Arabian Breeder’s Challenge (Gr. I PA).
