Early June 2019, the rehabilitation of the Saint-Jean
pond was inaugurated.
Mrs. the Prefect Sylvie Feucher, who had traveled
from St. Martin; David Matthews, General Manager
of Eden Rock St-Barth; Jim Boos, representative of
Roman Abramovitch as well as the President of the
Collectivité Bruno Magras, who reminisced about its
peculiar history...
Début juin 2019 a eu lieu l’inauguration de la réhabilitation
de l’étang de Saint Jean.
Etaient présents Mme la Préfète Sylvie Feucher,
qui avait fait le déplacement depuis Saint-Martin ;
David Matthews, directeur général de l’Eden Rock
St-Barth ; Jim Boos, représentant de Roman Abramovitch
ainsi que le Président de la Collectivité Bruno
Magras, qui n’était pas sans rappeler son historique
si singulier...

Rehabilitating a site hammered by abuse
In December 2013, the Community acquired a lot of land,
including an abandoned wetland. The mangrove and biodiversity
there were in bad shape, and nauseating odors
emanated from it because of the ironworks activities which
operated there.
To revive this water body and restore it to its natural state
was Jim Boos’ idea – a lover of Nature to whom we also
pay, at the beginning of the issue, a sincere tribute, though
too briefly considering his irreducible commitment to green
citizenship.
The goal? Deepening the basin, creating bird sanctuary islands,
replanting the mangrove and restoring access to the
sea to allow water to circulate permanently between both
environments.
And a major project
The project, initially endowed with a 4.9 million-euro envelope,
was hampered, however, by the passage of
Hurricane Irma - resulting in a total bill of 7 million euros.
The willingness and perseverance of the professionals
and volunteers involved have nevertheless resulted in a satisfactory
and tangible restoration of the site, until various
areas of improvement may materialize.
A collective effort highlighted by the President during the
inauguration ceremony, in the form of thanks extended to
all the people involved locally for the environment, among
other agencies and associations ensuring the follow-up of
the pond’s evolution and who regularly carry out surveys of
the species present, water testing, cleaning operations or
awareness programs.
Now, tourists and residents alike can fully appreciate the
development of a discovery area dedicated to encouraging
the immersion of its visitors in an exceptional biodiversity,
over a walk. Note however that picnic, jogging and fishing
are prohibited!
And for good reasons no less: as Bruno Magras noted towards
the end of the speech, nature’s conservation depends on
each and every one of us - only individuals embracing responsible
and reasoned behaviors may lead to the overall
success of the system!
Réhabilitation d’un espace malmené
En décembre 2013, la Collectivité fait l’acquisition d’un
terrain comprenant un marécage laissé à l’abandon. La
mangrove et la biodiversité s’y trouvent alors en piteux
état, et des odeurs nauséabondes en émanent du fait de l’activité
de ferronnerie qui y opère.
Faire revivre ce plan d’eau pour le rétablir dans son fonctionnement
naturel était l’idée de Jim Boos, amoureux de la Nature
à qui nous rendons d’ailleurs, en début de numéro, un
hommage sincère quoique trop bref au vu de son irréductible
engagement éco-citoyen.
Objectif ? Approfondir le bassin, constituer des îlots de refuge
pour les oiseaux, replanter la mangrove et restaurer une
communication avec la mer qui permette à l’eau de circuler
en permanence entre les deux milieux.
Et un chantier d’envergure
Le projet, dont le financement initial s’élevait à 4,9 millions
d’euros, se voit toutefois entravé par le passage de l’ouragan
Irma – avec pour conséquence une facture totale
de 7 millions d’euros. La volonté et persévérance des professionnels
et bénévoles impliqués auront néanmoins abouti à
une restauration satisfaisante et palpable du plan d’eau, en
attendant que se matérialisent divers points d’amélioration.
Un effort collectif souligné par le Président lors de la cérémonie
d’inauguration, sous forme de remerciements adressés à l’ensemble
des personnes engagées localement pour l’environnement,
entre autres agences et associations assurant le suivit de
l’évolution de l’étang et qui régulièrement effectuent des recensements
des espèces présentes, analyses de l’eau, opérations
de nettoyage ou encore programmes de sensibilisation.
Aujourd’hui, touristes et résidents peuvent pleinement apprécier
l’aménagement d’un espace découverte voué à encourager
l’immersion de ses visiteurs au sein de son exceptionnelle
biodiversité, le temps d’une promenade. À noter cependant
que picnic, footing et pêche y sont interdits !
Et pour cause : ainsi que le rappelait en fin de discours Mr
Bruno Magras, la protection de la nature dépend de chacun
d’entre nous – seule l’adoption individuelle d’un comportement
responsable et raisonné contribuera à la réussite générale du
système !
