COMMUTER
RENCONTRE AVEC ULRICH GRÉAUX,
CHEF PILOTE DE ST BARTH COMMUTER
Interview by / Propos recueillis par
Sally Stainier
When he joined St Barth Commuter in June 2005,
Ulrich Gréaux achieved two dreams at once: living
off his passion, and living on his island. Now the
company’s Air Operations Officer as well as the instructor-examiner
in charge of training new recruits,
he agreed to share parts of an eventful career path,
driven by the love of aviation.
The Commuter – Where did you
learn to fly?
Ulrich Gréaux – I passed my private
pilot exam here with Benjamin
Laplace who was a professional pilot
at the time and is now an agent
working at the control tower... So I
started at a very young age, about
19 years old. At first, I flew mainly
PA28s, 4-seater planes, for personal
use: I took my friends to St. Martin
and later on, I would go there
with my wife - had her discover Anguilla,
etc. But given the cost, I flew
20 hours tops throughout the year;
now I fly 600 hours each year, it’s
not the same story! [laughs]
The Commuter – Do you remember
your first flight as part of the company?
Ulrich Gréaux – The first flights with
the airline are always special, for
passengers are in direct contact
with us as our aircrafts do not include
separate cockpits. One must
learn how to deal with and ignore
this sort of distractions, such as
comments of passengers landing in
St. Barth for the very first time, and
eager to immortalize the moment
with a picture.
The Commuter – How would you
define St Barth Commuter’s identity,
its specificity and philosophy?
Ulrich Gréaux –First of all, it is a local
airline. We operate in unusual
conditions, with solo pilots flying
over a beautiful yet challenging region,
from tropical weather realities
to peculiar runways.
I must have landed here over
20,000 times, since I first started…
And out of 20,000 landings or so, I
had to go around the throttle but a
bunch of times… We pay close attention
to the maintenance of our
aircrafts; we replace our engines
half way through their life-cycle,
which guarantees optimal reliability.
The Commuter – What is the specificity
of landing in St. Barth?
Ulrich Gréaux – We typically arrive
very high above ground and
in general, in a staggered position.
In contrast with standard approach
The Commuter – Où avez-vous appris
à piloter ?
Ulrich Gréaux – J’ai passé mon pilote
privé ici avec Benjamin Laplace
qui était à l’époque pilote professionnel
et qui est maintenant agent à la
tour... Donc j’ai commencé tout jeune,
à 19 ans à peu près. Au début, essentiellement
des PA28, des avions 4
places, pour mes trajets personnels :
emmener les amis à Saint-Martin et
à la fin, j’y allais avec ma femme – lui
faisais découvrir Anguille, etc. Mais
étant donné le coût, je faisais 20
heures de vol maximum dans l’année ;
là en compagnie on en fait 600, c’est
pas pareil ! [rires]
The Commuter – Vous rappelez-vous
de votre premier vol au
sein de la compagnie ?
Ulrich Gréaux – Les premiers vols
dans la compagnie sont toujours
particuliers, il y a la présence des
passagers avec qui nous sommes
en contact direct sur nos avions car
le cockpit n’est pas séparé. Il faut apprendre
à la gérer et faire abstraction
des différentes distractions comme
les commentaires des passagers qui
découvrent l’atterrissage à Saint-Barth
pour la première fois et veulent immortaliser
le souvenir par une photo.
The Commuter – Qu’est-ce qui fait
l’identité, la particularité de St Barth
Commuter, sa philosophie ?
Ulrich Gréaux – C’est déjà une compagnie
locale. Nous avons une exploitation
particulière, en monopilote
dans une zone magnifique mais avec
ses challenges comme la météo tropicale
et des pistes particulières.
Des atterrissages, ici, je dois en
avoir plus de 20 000 depuis le tout
début… Et sur ces 20 000 atterrissages
j’ai dû remettre les gaz une
poignée de fois… Nous portons une
attention particulière à l’entretien de
nos machines ; nous changeons les
moteurs à la moitié de leur potentiel,
ce qui nous assure une fiabilité
optimale.
The Commuter – Quelle est la spécificité
de l’atterrissage à Saint-Barth ?
Ulrich Gréaux – C’est qu’on arrive
très haut et en général, décalé.
Lorsqu’on sait que les plans d’ap-
