FRANCAIS Les tramways belges en Egypte (1894-1960) par R. Dussart-Desart Des Belges ont créé et/ou équipé tous les réseaux de tramways établis en Egypte avant 1960. Voici l’histoire des tramways du Caire, d’Héliopolis, d’Alexandrie, de Port Saïd mais aussi des chemins de fer secondaires de la Basse-Egypte, du Fayoum et de l’Est égyptien. Le livre ne s’arrête pas à la fin de la « période belge » de ces exploitations : plusieurs pages illustrent les réseaux du Caire, d’Héliopolis et de 1960 à 1992, ainsi que les tramways belges préservés aujourd’hui au Caire et à Héliopolis. Le livre évoque enfin les nombreux liens entre ces entreprises, allant de l’entretien de matériel roulant à l’envoi d’enquêteurs, ainsi que leurs filiales actives dans la production d’électricité et la construction ferroviaire. L’étude est basée sur l’exploitation systématique des archives des exploitants, plusieurs visites sur place et trente années de correspondance avec des témoins de la vie de ces réseaux. Dussart-Desart (in French) This book describes the detailed history of the tramways of Cairo, Heliopolis, Alexandria, Port Saïd and of the light railways in the Lower Egypt and Fayoum areas. All those networks were financed or equipped by Belgians in the 1864-1960 period, the last of them being nationalized in 1960. Several pages also illustrate the networks of Cairo, Heliopolis and Alexandria in the sixties, the seventies and in 1980 and in 1992. Two pages are devoted to Belgian tramways preserved today in Cairo and Heliopolis. The book analyses the various joint ventures between those undertakings (ranging from rolling stock overhaul to exchange of “spies”) and the history of their subsidiary companies active in the fields of the generation of electricity and of the production of rolling stock. This study is based on an in-depth survey of the archives of the operators, several trips on-site and thirty years of exchanges with witnesses of the development of those networks. Beyond an historical approach describing the harsh realities of another era, the author tries to add a touch of humor and of humanity. Hier is de geschiedenis van de trams van Caïro, Heliopolis, Alexandrië, Port Said maar ook van de secundaire spoorwegen van Neder Egypte, Fayoum en Oost-Egypte. Verschillende pagina's illustreren ook de netwerken van Caïro, Heliopolis en Alexandrië na 1960, in 1980 en 1992, evenals de Belgische trams die vandaag bewaard worden in Caïro en Heliopolis. Ten slotte bespreekt het boek de banden tussen deze bedrijven en hun dochterondernemingen die actief zijn in de productie van elektriciteit en spoorwegbouw. Het onderzoek is gebaseerd op de systematische exploitatie van de archieven van de operatoren, verschillende bezoeken ter plaatse en dertig jaar correspondentie met getuigen over het leven van deze netwerken.
