Fiumicino, a railway station, a
boat stop on the Tiber, 275,000
sqm for reserved parking,
300,000 sqm for public park
area and over 5 km of connecting
tapis roulant along the pavilions,
integrate this ambitious
work, marked with the Vertical
Sea, the imposing creation by
Fabrizio Plessi, the world’s biggest
technological sculpture
which will get at Ponte Galeria
together with the Italian Pavilion
from the Universal Expo in
Hannover 2000, handed over to
Fiera di Roma from the Italian
Government after the Expo.
After the capital stock has
been increased, from 65 million
euro to 131, by the Chamber of
Commerce for 47%, from the
Municipality of Rome for 27%,
from the Latium Region for
12% and from the Agency for
the Latium Development for
12%, it has been hold the
Services’ Conference in order
to approve the whole project
related to the town planning.
In order to manage the new
pole, following the successful
trend among the exhibiting international
scene (the splitting the
ownership of the structures and
the activity management), a new
Company it has been constituted
shared at 25% by Fiera di Roma
Spa and at 75% from private
operators. Fiera di Roma will be
the holder partner.
Construction is scheduled to
begin at the end of 2003 and the
inauguration of the first pavilions,
for a total of 147,000 sqm
for the beginning of 2006, while
the entire structure will be fully
operating in 2010.
Is Fiera di Roma going to be
the new big leading part able
to steal the scene to the major
national exhibiting quarters?
“Not
really –

of the Chamber of Commerce in
Rome and recently called as
President of Fiera di Roma Spa –
Fiera di Roma was born to
respond to the market demand:
local, national and international.
Careful analysis says that
Rome can become a preminent
exhibiting pole in Europe and
worldwide and, in the globalization
age, this is the sole sphere
where the competition has sense.
Therefore there is no opposition
with other big national fairs, but
an added strategy and possible
partnerships, in order to strengthen
the entire national system.
This project seems to be an
happy example of strong cooperation
between public and private;
can you better explain how
this collaboration is articulated?
“The new Fiera di Roma will
be one of the most important
work of public interest realized in
Rome in the past 50 years, a concrete
example of a developing
model I have always supported
and promoted: that is the interaction
between public and private.
Recently in Rome this new skill
in cooperation made possible the
realization of other big and
important works for the City’s
economic development. I am
thinking about the Technological
Pole and the Agrifood Centre.
The overcome investment foreseen
is of 500 million euro, obtained
through a project financing
involving important Banks ad
well as public and private actors.
Lamaro Appalti of Toti Bros., who
will be constructing the structures
and a big organizer company,

will enter to
manage the
Company.
Which are
the characteristics
who will
made the
roman exhibi-
ting quarter a special actor in
the international scene?
The extension of the grounds
(92 hectars), an extraordinary
structure under the building,
urban, techcnical points of view
and its strategic position at
Ponte Galeria going towards
Roma-Fiumicino.
The new Fair will in fact take
advantage of the favourable position
with regard to all transport
routes (the intercontinental airport,
the highway Roma-Fiumicino, the
Ring Road, the Port of Civitavecchia),
besides the new scheduled
passageway and the construction
of a train station in the same area.
Last but not the least, Rome,
which gains an extraordinary
advantage worldwide in respect to
the other big Capitals, thanks to
its millenarian history, to its cultural
tradition, to its artistic heritage,
with no equivalent actors and
a life’s quality which make it an
highly appreciated to the economic
international operators.
What are the economic
advantages on the territory?
“I am convinced that the new
Fair, which balance is foreseen
to be reached from the 3 rd managerial
year, will represent an
extraordinary opportunity for
the development in the Capital,
contributing towards new investments,
new jobs, new richness.
The economic impact over the
territory, when fully operating, is
700 million euro estimated per
year, with an employment increase,
fully operating, of about
45,000 units. Furthermore the
project will develop further
employment for about 12,000
units at the beginning of building
works, with more than 1100 millions
of euros of positive production
in building sector.
How the calendar of the
new Fiera di Roma will be
distinguishing?
Between 2006 and 2010,
together with those managed by
third operators, there will be
added 20 new owned directly
events of a national and international
interest, for which it has
already been estimated the presence
of about 1,200,000 visitors
while, upon the completion of the
expansion plans, we expect over
two millions visitors attending.
Among the various sectors, we
are going to highlight those related
to multimediality, telecommunications,
Public Administration,
building techniques, cultural
heritage, tourism and fashion.
The construction is scheduled
by the Building Company to start
within this year; we can make a
rendez-vous at the beginning of
2006 for the inauguration of the
new Fiera di Roma.
