1. Boarezzo 2. Otto Monestier, “Falegname” / “Carpenter” Il borgo di Boarezzo, situato in Valganna, è posto su un fianco del monte Piambello (1129 m s.l.m.); è costituito da poche case in sasso, strade strette e viottoli acciottolati ed è circondato da boschi di faggi e castagni, che caratterizzano un paesaggio tipicamente montano. Leggende e storie tramandate oralmente fanno risalire le origini del paese intorno al XII secolo e narrano la presenza della famiglia Chini, proveniente da Arezzo, insediatasi per prima a Boarezzo, presumibilmente per rifornirsi di legname atto alla produzione del carbone di legna, di cui questa zona era ricca. Il carbone prodotto era in seguito trasportato a Milano per mezzo di buoi. La credenza popolare ha ricondotto l'origine del nome del borgo a tale attività e l'espressione corrente "I buoi di quelli di Arezzo" si sarebbe trasformata nel tempo in Boarezzo. Negli anni il paese si ampliò e la popolazione presente si dedicò, oltre alla produzione e vendita del carbone, all'allevamento di bestiame e al lavoro in una miniera di galena (piombo e argento). Tra '800 e '900 Boarezzo divenne meta di turismo e villeggiatura delle famiglie facoltose di Como, Milano e Varese che qui potevano godere di una splendida vista sulle Alpi Lombarde e pernottare presso l'Albergo Piambello, che ospitò migliaia di visitatori nelle sue sale spiccatamente liberty, ma che in seguito alla sua chiusura - avvenuta negli anni '70 - fu abbandona- 2. 1. The hamlet of Boarezzo in Valganna valley is situated on the slopes of Mount Piambello (1129 mt a.s.l.). It consists of just a few stone houses, narrow streets and cobbled alleys, and it is surrounded by beech and chestnut woods which create a typical mountain landscape. Legends and tales handed down by word of mouth date back the origins of the village to about the 12th century. They tell of the presence of Chini family from Arezzo, who were the first to settle there, presumably to stock up on wood for the production of coal, which was abundant in that area. The coal produced was then transported to Milan with oxen. A popular belief relates the origin of the name of the village to that activity, and according to it the current expression "the oxen (buoi) of those people from Arezzo" was probably transformed, with time, into "Bo-arezzo". Over the years, the village grew and, besides the production and the sale of coal, the population dedicated itself to cattle breeding and lead 9
