Boarezzo, Olona, Peveranza, Runo e San Fermo
brillanti colori, godibile in ogni stagione.
The province of Varese features wide, beautiful
valleys; these create panoramic spots from which
we can admire a territory which is surrounded by
hills and studded with lakes and rivers. Many of
these places, which fascinate us both for their
landscape and their natural wealth, have increased
their appeal over the last 50 years thanks to an
architectural-artistic project centred on the idea of
“painted villages”.
The borough of Marchirolo and the outlying villages
such as Arcumeggia, Boarezzo, Olona, Peveranza,
Runo and San Fermo are today famous for the
harmonious integration between their surrounding
countryside and their wall paintings and frescoes,
whose subjects are linked to the origins of these
places, to their customs, trades and popular beliefs.
A single unified brightly-coloured palette which can
be enjoyed in all seasons has thus been created .
all'aperto dell'affresco" in Italia.
Arcumeggia is a small hamlet in the borough of
Casalzuigno nestling in the green heart of Valcuvia
valley. Besides being the most famous painted village
in the province of Varese, Arcumeggia was the first
experience of an “Open-air fresco gallery” in Italy. In
1956, this place was chosen by Varese Provincial Tourist
Board as the site of the exhibition “Painters on holiday”.
This exhibition attracted the artists who were representative
of the ideas and main Italian trends of the mid-
20 th century. The main thing uniting them was the
common aim of re-proposing figurative art in opposition
to the avant-garde expressions of the first decades of
the century, which had led to the disintegration of forms
and to an abstract, informal production. The first group
altri noti artisti, quali Aligi Sassu, Remo Brindisi,
Giuseppe Migneco, Gianni Dova,Aldo Carpi e Umberto
le immagini relative all'emigrazione, raffigurazioni
All'interno
sono custodite diverse opere tra formel-
of artists who used the ancient, traditional technique of
the fresco was: Achille Funi, Eugenio Tomiolo, Gianfilippo
Usellini, Francesco Menzio, Fiorenzo Tomea, Giovanni
Brancaccio, Enzo Morelli, Bruno Saetti and Ferruccio
Ferrazzi. Other well-known artists followed them,
such as Aligi Sassu, Remo Brindisi, Giuseppe Migneco,
Gianni Dova, Aldo Carpi and Umberto Faini, as well as
local painters such as Innocente Salvini, Antonio Pedretti
and Albino Reggiori. Among the subjects painted there
were emigration, symbolic-allegorical themes, portraits
of the inhabitants and trades of the village; also some
saints and religious scenes and, recently, depictions of
nature and landscape. This ambitious project, which is
still in progress, made it necessary to create places where
the artists could lodge during their work. For this
reason, the House of the Painter was set up in 1957.
Here, they could sleep and work on the sketches for their
frescoes. Various works are kept inside, including tiles,
paintings, preparatory cartoons and sketches on paper,
left behind as testimonies by the artists who stayed and
worked here. Among the other attractions of the village
there is the forecourt of the Sant’Ambrogio ‘s church (St.
Ambrose), where we can admire the frescoes of the 14
stations of the Cross.
Of particular beauty are the small courtyards which still
contain traces of the summer fresco-painting courses
held in Arcumeggia starting from 1961. Over the years,
young people from the academies all over Italy have
participated in these. In the heart of the village, in Via
(Arcumeggia 1862-Torino 1935), e Giovanni Vidini
attività e l'espressione corrente "I buoi di quelli di Arezzo"
si sarebbe trasformata nel tempo in Boarezzo. Negli
The hamlet of Boarezzo in Valganna valley is situated
on the slopes of Mount Piambello (1129 mt a.s.l.). It
consists of just a few stone houses, narrow streets and
cobbled alleys, and it is surrounded by beech and
chestnut woods which create a typical mountain
landscape. Legends and tales handed down by word
of mouth date back the origins of the village to about
the 12th century. They tell of the presence of Chini
family from Arezzo, who were the first to settle there,
presumably to stock up on wood for the production
of coal, which was abundant in that area. The coal
produced was then transported to Milan with oxen. A
popular belief relates the origin of the name of the
village to that activity, and according to it the current
expression "the oxen (buoi) of those people from
Arezzo" was probably transformed, with time, into
"Bo-arezzo". Over the years, the village grew and,
besides the production and the sale of coal, the
population dedicated itself to cattle breeding and lead
to.
in "villaggio dipinto" dedicato a Giuseppe Grandi
(Ganna 1843-1894) e ad Odoardo Tabacchi (Ganna
1836-Milano 1905), due tra le figure più prestigiose
dell'intero panorama scultoreo italiano
dell'800, nati in Valganna. L'ambizioso progetto vide
and silver mining. Between 1800 and 1900, Boarezzo
became a tourist attraction and a holiday place for the
rich families of Como, Milan and Varese. Here they
could enjoy a splendid view over the Lombard Alps and
stay at Piambello Hotel, which could accommodate
thousands of guests in its Art Nouveau rooms, but
which was neglected after its closure in the 1970s.
Since then on, its population gradually abandoned the
village, until the painter Mario Alioli decided to
revitalize it and to recover its vocation as a tourist
attraction. His idea was to transform it into a
"painted village" dedicated to Giuseppe Grandi (Ganna
1843-1894) and to Odoardo Tabacchi (Ganna 1836-
Milan 1905), two of the most prestigious 19th-century
Italian sculptors, who were born in Valganna. The
ambitious project was begun by inviting 16 artists to
create painted and frescoed panels to be placed on the
walls of the houses; these would celebrate the
traditions and former trades of the rural life of the
village, forming a kind of narrative itinerary. The visitor
is welcome by a "poem" in Bosino dialect, composed
by Paolo Rattazzi, and by a painted landscape showing
a glimpse of the village. In the foreground there are an
overturned pannier and a rake, symbolizing the end of
peasant life. This first work is followed by the
paintings of the "Peasant" by Albino Ambrosetti, the
"Woodcutter" by Mario Alioli, and the "Basketweavers"
by Mario Bogani, one of the most delicate
and particular frescoes in the village. A small church
dedicated to St. John the Baptist stands just in the heart
of the built-up area. On its walls we can see the
"Crucifixion" by Vittorio Tavernari and the "Patron
Saint’s Feast" by Carlo Farioli. Some of the trades and

chiaramente a modelli michelangioleschi. Sull'antico
Mario Alioli. L’Associazione “Amici di Boarezzo",
dal 1988 salvaguarda e amplia il ricco patrimonio
artistico e ambientale del luogo.
1. Silvio Monti, “Ul Bagatt” (il calzolaio) / “Cobbler”
2. Vittorio Tavernari, “Crocifissione” / “Crucifixion”
crafts represented are "The Cobbler" by Silvio Monti,
the "Stonecutter" by Luigi Bennati and the “Carpenter"
by Otto Monestier. The latter is well known in
publishing circles, because he was the last illustrator
of the Sunday newspaper La Domenica del Corriere.
His painting, with its marked religious references in the
physiognomy of the carpenter, who in fact recalls the
iconography of St. Joseph, and in the finger of the
angelic female figure pointing heavenward, is clearly
inspired by Michelangelo. On the old wash house which
is still in use, Albino Reggiori has painted the "Potter's
workshop", a homage to the famous pottery of Ghirla
in which the inhabitants of Boarezzo were involved for
many years. Over the years the village has acquired
more paintings, which form the itinerary "Once
upon a time there was a wood", and which show the
flora and fauna of the area. The particular purpose of
this itinerary is educational, specially aimed at children,
for whom painting courses have also been held by the
painter Mario Alioli. Since 1988, the "Association
Boarezzo Friends" has been protecting and increasing
the rich artistic and environmental heritage of Boarezzo.
“La cartolina dall’America” / “The postcard from America”
Tale iniziativa
dagli affetti familiari. Tale condizione, seppur in diverso
dipinsero l’“Attesa”, mentre Camillo Fait, in “Quelli
scenografica scalinata e dominante l’intero paese.
Marchirolo is a small municipality in the southwestern
mountains of Lake Ceresio and it is situated
in the valley of the same name, a few kilometres from
the Swiss border. The artists Eugenio Pellini (Marchirolo
1864-Milan 1934) and Adriano Bozzolo (1927) were
born here; the latter still lives and works here, and
several of his works are kept in Pellini-Bozzolo plaster
cast gallery. In 1983, the town council organized a
“mural exhibition”, inaugurated on 21 st May and
ended on 2 nd October. They invited about 15 artists to
produce individual works on the theme of emigration
over the centuries “from Marchirolo masters to todays
border workers “. The aim of the initiative was to pay
long-deserved homage to the labour of the local
workers, who had always been expert builders (some
contributed to the building of the Tonking railway in
China), and who had for years been forced to leave their
homes and families. In different ways, this condition is
common today to all those who cross the frontier to
work in nearby Switzerland. Some of the most
significant works are “The postcard from America” by
Carlo Berta and Felice Filippini, which reproduces a true
historical document, “hung” on the wall with a
drawing pin. On the yellowed postcard, Celeste Pella
greets his parents in the typical early 20 th -century handwriting.
The hardship and obstacles which an emigrant
of those times had to face are emphasized: “It isn’t the
America we believed it to be”. Other artists concentrated
instead on showing immigrants’ families: Umberto Galliani
and Giovanni Repossi painted “The Awaiting”,
while Camillo Fait, in “Those who stay behind”
concentrated on the faces of children and elderly
people, and ethereal female figures. Next to those, he
painted a pair of oxen and the church of San Martino,
the symbols of this place and its working life. Recently,
the old centre has acquired new works, including the
“Colours of mural memory” by Giorgio Polo, painted
on the façade of Angioj clubhouse. As you go along the
painted itinerary, which is punctuated by old farmhouses
and villas, we suggest you to stop off at the church of
San Martino, which stands on a spectacular flight of
steps and dominates the whole of the village. From here,
a walk through thick woodland leads, in about half-anhour,
to the Romanesque church of San Paolo, from
where you can enjoy a wide view over Lake Ceresio.
Peveranza, dal 1869 frazione di Cairate, fu probabilmente
ideata come fortificazione difensiva longobarda lungo
consiste nell’ubicazione di queste opere d’arte, ciascuna
posizionata sui muri degli edifici presso i quali questi lavori
si sono svolti realmente. Una trentina di raffigurazioni
di Gaetano Cattaneo, Ninus, Fabio e Gaudenzio Colombo,
Giuditta Crosta, Clara Gallo, Beniamino Gigli e Gianfranco
Peveranza, a rural district of Cairate since 1869, probably
grew up as a Lombard defensive fortification along Olona
valley on the piedmont road just a few kilometres from
Castelseprio fortress. The shape of the old centre confirms
that origin: a group of courtyards built side by side to one
another to reinforce their defensive character, and
surrounded by two water courses (Riale and Tenore), to
form a true “rural castle” around the church of Santa Maria
Assunta. In 2003 a group of local painters, all members of
“La Tavolozza” (“The Palette”) association, decided to
create an open-air art itinerary which would show the
history and ancient working traditions of the village on
painted panels. The particularity of that project lies in the
location of these works of art, each one on the walls of
the buildings where the specific trades were actually plied.
About 30 paintings by Gaetano Cattaneo, Ninus, Fabio and
Gaudenzio Colombo, Giuditta Crosta, Clara Gallo, Beniamino
Gigli and Gianfranco Mancon interpret the historical trades
of “Baker”, “Cobbler”, “Sower”, “Umbrellamaker”,
“Milker”, “Cadregat” or “Wicker chair mender”,
and other activities. Alongside these there are other
paintings showing moments of everyday life, such as the
“Harvest” and the “Threshing”. Two devotional pictures,
showing “Mary Immaculate” and the “Madonna of the
Bread” testify to the inhabitants’ faith and profound
devotion to Mary. Finally, the artists have painted places
beloved by the local people: the Church, the Foundry and
Grandmother’s house, a typical 19 th -century farmhouse still
standing. This farmhouse contains a rich ethnographical
collection concerning the peasant culture: household
objects, tools, furniture and clothing of the time.
A transparent glass slab on the floor of the upper storey allows
us to admire the brick vault of the kitchen below. If
you wish to visit this building, book by phone at
dato i natali all’artista Bernardino Luini, allievo di Leonardo
1. Luigi Bello "L'amore sboccia in valle" / “Love blossoms in the valley”
2. Andrea De Bernardi "Partenza" / “Departure”
The municipality of Dumenza, situated in a valley
surrounded by woods, has given its name to Dumentina Valley
(Val Dumentina), and was the birthplace of Bernardino
Luini, Leonardo da Vinci’s pupil, and of Vincenzo Peruggia,
a humble house-painter who became famous for stealing
the Mona Lisa from the Louvre in 1911. The hamlet of Runo
is also famous as the birthplace of Bartolomeo Scappi, the
“secret” cook of Pope Pius V and the author of the
greatest Renaissance treatise about cookery, Opera dell’arte
di cucinare (Work on the art of cookery). Regarding the
origins of the place, it can be said that a rudimental
settlement already appeared here at the time of the
barbarian invasions. The existence of two corbels in the form
of heads (one male, one female) and of the belfry at the side
of the church of San Giorgio, dated “the year 909”,
suggest that its inhabitants were already quite numerous for
that time, and for this reason they decided to build what
might initially have been a lookout tower. In 1978, some
inhabitants of Runo decided to launch a cultural-tourist
initiative, which was christened “Runo for the fresco”. The
aim was to create a “wall book” which could be “leafed
through” along the streets of the village. The project was
supposed to continue until 2000, but it was interrupted
around 1983. In any case, it succeeded in endowing the walls
of the houses with over 100 frescoes by different artists, who
depicted a wide variety of subjects. Some of the most
significant of these are the composition “L’afresch” (“The
fresco”) by the dialectal poet Rino Gariboldi, who described
the old painting technique in words, and the “Departure”
by Andrea De Bernardi, the only fresco painted directly
onto the wall, which shows a married couple in the
traditional early 19 th -century folk costume of Dumentina
and Veddasca valleys. Other frescoes can be admired in the
nearby hamlet of Stivigliano. Alongside the fresco painting
initiative, it was also decided to paint house numbers with
patterns of local flora and fauna.
ALTRI PAESI DIPINTI
OTHER PAINTED VILLAGES
Giovanni De Maria, Carlo Adelio Galimberti,Alberto Venditti,Antonio
Pedretti e Marco Severo.
Brunella, Enzo Capozza e Maria Rita Fedeli,Vittorio Frattini,
Silvio Monti, Maria Teresa Gonzàlez Ramìrez, Albino
Reggiori, Gianni Robusti, Claudio Rubino, Gianluigi Sommaruga,
Giorgio Vicentini e Anna Maria Vitale.
"Studio in Olona" utilizzò cartone e legno.
18
Just a few kilometres away from each other stand two recently-created
painted villages: San Fermo , a district of
Varese and Olona, a hamlet of Induno Olona.
About in 1999, the town council of Varese, drawing
inspiration from an art exhibition organized by the Association
of San Fermo Friends every year in July , decided
to liven up the stone walls and courtyards of that district
with some frescoes by well-known contemporary artists
such as Claudio Cargiolli, Giovanni De Maria, Carlo
Adelio Galimberti, Alberto Venditti, Antonio Pedretti and
Marco Severo. With the same intention, the council of
Induno Olona set up the project “Olona, a village of art”,
inaugurated on 27 th October 2002, in which 12
contemporary artists with connections to Varese land
participated: Mario Alioli, Enrico Brunella, Enzo Capozza
and Maria Rita Fedeli, Vittorio Frattini, Silvio Monti, Maria
Teresa Gonzàlez Ramirez, Albino Reggiori, Gianni Robusti,
Claudio Rubino, Gianluigi Sommaruga, Giorgio Vicentini
and Anna Maria Vitale. Each of them chose to
interpret different subjects, with particular attention to the
theme of the three wise kings, to whom the small church
of Olona is dedicated. Some of them chose techniques
different from the fresco, as Albino Reggiori and Giorgio
Vicentini did. The former created an “Inlay” of pottery
fragments and enamel and the latter used cardboard and
wood for his provocative work “Studio in Olona”.
conserva scavi archeologici dell'alto medioevo testimonianti
Battista.
After the tour of the painted village of Peveranza, we
suggest you continue to go on along the SP42 road, which
drives you to the municipality of Castelseprio (310 mt a.s.l.)
in 10 minutes. Here you will find conserved early
mediaeval remains testifying the existence of a
military castrum defending the Alps borders on this side,
and going back to the beginning of the 4 th century A.D.
The defensive walls, which extended towards the bottom
of the valley, were built during the reign of the Ostrogoth
king, Theodoric as well as the Basilica of San Giovanni
Evangelista (St. John the Evangelist) and the Baptistery of
San Giovanni Battista (St. John the Baptist). In the Longo-
19
resti sono visibili all'interno dell'attuale zona archeologica.
Santa Maria Foris Portas, particolare poiché costituita
a settentrione, oriente e meridione, tre absidi semicircolari.
All'interno si conserva uno splendido ciclo
di affreschi sull'infanzia di Cristo, tratto dalle storie
dei vangeli apocrifi.
20
bard era (6 th - 8 th centuries A.D.), the castrum expanded
and subsequently passed under the domination of the
Franks of Charlemagne, becoming the centre of the
County of Seprio which was in fact created in the
Carolingian age. At the end of the fight between Della Torre
family and Visconti victorious family for the domination of
Milan, the fortification was destroyed on the night of 28 th
March 1287. Only the churches and their subsidiary
buildings were saved, and remains of these can be seen
inside the present archaeological area. Archbishop Ottone
Visconti decreed that the old fortress should never again
be inhabited or rebuilt. This ban, which was sworn by the
captain and then by the vicar of Seprio up to 1786, was
fully respected until it was suppressed by the emperor
Joseph II of Austria. Outside the walls of the late Roman
castrum, in the adjacent area known as the “Borgo”, on
one of the small hills, the church of Santa Maria Foris Portas
(St. Mary’s Outside the Gates) stands. It is particular, as
it consists of a rectangular area opening up onto three
semi-circular apses. Inside, there is a splendid cycle of
frescoes about the childhood of Christ, taken from the
stories of the apocryphal gospels.
Abbandonato
definitivamente dalle monache nel 1482, fu in seguito
esempio di architettura montana. Case in pietra,
dedicata a San Martino e a Barnaba. Tutt'intorno
complesso monastico benedettino-fruttariense accresciutosi
The artistic heart of Valganna is the abbey of Saint
Gemolus. This Benedictine-Fructarian monastery
developed from the 12 th century on around the
original nucleus which centred on the Romanesque
church built for the cult of the martyr Gemolus.
According to tradition, Saint Gemolus was brutally
murdered in the valley by brigands towards the end
of the 10 th century. The monastic community took
charge of the reclamation of the territory, draining
the marshes, redirecting the waters into the present Lake
of Ganna, systematically cultivating the wooded land
and creating systems of drainage and channelling.
That industriousness had lasting effects on the
complex of buildings, almost all of which are usable
alquanto caratteristici per la loro inusuale conformazione
pentagonale.
Tempo di visita / Tour time: 1h 30min
Villa Della Porta Bozzolo a Casalzuigno, sorta nel
cinquecento come villa di campagna, fu trasformata
in nobile dimora di rappresentanza all'inizio del
Settecento.
Battista Ronchelli. Nel 1752 fu terminato l'oratorio
privato, ancora oggi usato dalla comunità di
Casalzuigno come chiesa parrocchiale.
Villa Della Porta Bozzolo in Casalzuigno, built in the
16th century as a country villa, was transformed
into a stately home at the beginning of the 18 th
century. The inside of the villa was splendidly
frescoed in the subsequent decades, and at the
beginning of the 18 th century the markedly Baroque
monumental garden was made. In fact, by exploiting
the slope of the hill behind the villa to obtain
surprising perspective effects, a French garden was
created, with much use of Viggiù stone for the
artefacts. On the north side, a large niche was
constructed with a fresco showing Apollo and the
Muses, attributed to Giovanni Battista Ronchelli.
In 1752, the private oratory was completed. This is
still used by the community of Casalzuigno as a
parish church. At the end of 18 th century Della Porta
family suffered a financial crisis and was forced
to sell its property. The villa had several owners and
gradually deteriorated.
Since 1989 it has belonged to the FAI (Italian Environmental
TAPPA 2 / STAGE 2:
SANT'ANTONIO - ALPE SAN MICHELE
Tempo di visita / Tour time: 40min
percorso amato dai ciclisti, o ritornare verso Arcumeggia
all'alpeggio.
(XI sec.) arricchita all'interno da affreschi.
Five minutes away from Arcumeggia we can walk
up to the village of Sant’Antonio (638 mt a.s.l.). From
the forecourt of the small church we can enjoy one
of the most charming panoramic views over Lake
Maggiore. From here we can proceed as far as Cuvignone
pass (1036 mt a.s.l.), a route much loved by
cyclists, or we can return to Arcumeggia and reach
Alpe San Michele (822 mt a.s.l.) in a 15-minute drive,
passing along the Straa di Caver, an old route along
which herds of goats (caver) used to be led to summer
pasture. The small mountain village has green
meadows and boasts an early Romanesque church
(11 th century) with frescoes inside.
