After that, the sea floor will be dredged; in this<br />
way the boats of me<strong>di</strong>um-high tonnage will be<br />
able to stop inside the port.<br />

<strong>Molfetta</strong> has a lot of tra<strong>di</strong>tions but the most famous is<br />
Madonna of Martiri’s Day, patron of seamen. The<br />
sanctuary, devoted to Her, was built in 1162 and it<br />
became on obligatory stop for pilgrims. It was also a<br />
residence for ecclesiastics,bishops and guestrooms for<br />
people of high social stan<strong>di</strong>ng. It keeps the painting of<br />
the Virgin, a Byzantine<br />
icon painted on<br />
cedarwood, an object of<br />
worship and devotions.<br />
Towards the middle of<br />
the nineteenth century, a<br />
citizen gave a wooden<br />
statue to the sanctuary. It<br />
was a work of the<br />
Neapolitan sculptor,<br />
Giuseppe Verzella. Since<br />
then, the statue is taken<br />
in procession by sea. It is<br />
embarked in the early<br />
afternoon of the eight of<br />
September<br />
