Besides the new branch, another butress will be
built in order to mitigate the waves and the winds
coming from the South- Est.
After twenty years, this project can finally see the
light of day.
Before starting the building of the new port, great
reclamation work has benn necessary.
Specialized soldiers are working to take out
bombs, bullets and charges.
After that, the sea floor will be dredged; in this
way the boats of medium-high tonnage will be
able to stop inside the port.

Molfetta has a lot of traditions but the most famous is
Madonna of Martiri’s Day, patron of seamen. The
sanctuary, devoted to Her, was built in 1162 and it
became on obligatory stop for pilgrims. It was also a
residence for ecclesiastics,bishops and guestrooms for
people of high social standing. It keeps the painting of
the Virgin, a Byzantine
icon painted on
cedarwood, an object of
worship and devotions.
Towards the middle of
the nineteenth century, a
citizen gave a wooden
statue to the sanctuary. It
was a work of the
Neapolitan sculptor,
Giuseppe Verzella. Since
then, the statue is taken
in procession by sea. It is
embarked in the early
afternoon of the eight of
