«Ho lavorato molto di più adesso a Porto che
da giovane, quando volevo vivere la città. Al
lago associo il ricordo di un’infanzia felice, le
corse in bicicletta, la pesca dei gobbini. Mio
padre poi mi insegnò a coltivare l’orto, passione
che mi è rimasta fino a oggi, come
quella per la pesca in barca. Il paese poi unisce,
ci si conosce tutti e tutti conoscono le
storie che si raccontano in giro. I grandi

from Major Lake
The french writer Gustave Flaubert,
used to say that Major Lake is a place
where “nature is enchanting by thousand
mysterious charms and where we
can feel ourselves in a state of rare
sensuality and refinement”. Certainly
this lake has got an inconstant soul,
like a beautiful woman: she betrays
you with a smile and immediately
after she lives voluptuosly just for you,
with smooth waves and pastel colours
and green-blue mountain ridges, but
with the storm always lying in wait,
blown by impetuous winds.
By the lake one can feel either a poet,
either he laughs at himself, cultivating
an intimate longing of telling, of partaking
the sense of humour, through the
words, the gestures and the glance. A
particular ground where often vigorous
shoots grow, looking for a way to go,
which can be often tortuous but also
unique. Here lives the subtle sadness of
the evening, the winking smile of the
cashier girl of legendary cafés, the written
word of those who made this lake a
universal scene, a magnificent setting
for a striking human comedy.
On those shores grew up important
names of the art of comedy such as
Dario Fo, Vittorio Sereni, and Piero
Chiara, followed by a sworm of young
people as if, from Cannobio to Luino,
a magnetic mainstream flow underground,
able to provoke in those who
are wandering in these places a kind
of comic-humorous madness.
Among them Massimo Boldi, Francesco
Salvi, Renato Pozzetto, Enzo Jachetti
and the music teller Nanni
Svampa. All artists genially skilled in
removing the coat of melancholy, in
entertaining the power of laugh, in
memory of a youth spent in a tremendous
wilderness, amid the magic of
the lake and its mermaids.
