3. Checklist documentation and distribution data for Baltic Sea benthic invertebrate species The checklist for Baltic Sea benthic invertebrate species compiled within the HELCOM Red List project currently includes 1898 macrozoobenthic species and their most common synonyms. This is the most diverse group in the HELCOM checklist and by far the largest. Figures 8 and 9 show species diversity per sub-basin, as well as 13 additional sections of coastline such as bays, lagoons and estuaries (see Figure 10 for the locations of the additional coastal sections). Figure 10 shows the distribution of species diversity per sub-basin. Figure 8.
