for <strong>Baltic</strong> <strong>Sea</strong> benthic invertebrate <strong>species</strong><br />

The checklist for <strong>Baltic</strong> <strong>Sea</strong> benthic invertebrate<br />

<strong>species</strong> compiled within the HELCOM Red List<br />

project currently includes 1898 macrozoobenthic<br />

<strong>species</strong> and their most common synonyms. This<br />

is the most diverse group in the HELCOM checklist<br />

and by far the largest. Figures 8 and 9 show<br />

<strong>species</strong> diversity per sub-basin, as well as 13 additional<br />

sections <strong>of</strong> coastline such as bays, lagoons<br />

and estuaries (see Figure 10 for the locations <strong>of</strong> the<br />

additional coastal sections). Figure 10 shows the<br />

distribution <strong>of</strong> <strong>species</strong> diversity per sub-basin.<br />
