HIDDEN TRACES
Narni lo Speco francescano
heavenly vault with their gaze to the sky, we try to understand
its mysteries and search for our star in the Planetarium of
Amelia’s Annunziata Convent.
The stones in Narni are the backdrop for the reconstruction of
the Middle Ages that are revived in the Ring Festival, when
WINES
“COLLI AMERINI” D.O.C.
The area of D.O.C.
production includes the hilly
territory of Amelia, Narni,
Calvi, Otricoli, Montecastrilli,
Alviano, Lugnano and Penna
in Teverina, Giove, and part
of the Terni area.
A territory known mainly for
red wines, but by regulation
it is characterised for various
types: white, red and rosé.
In the Rosso, Rosso
Superiore, Rosato and
Novello the basis is made up
of Sangiovese grapes (65-
80%), accompanied by
Merlot, Montepulciano,
Cannaiolo, Ciliegiolo and
Barbera;
in the “Colli Amerini Bianco”
type the basis is Trebbiano
Toscano (70-85%), with
Grechetto, Verdello,
Garganega and Malvasia
Toscana;
in the “Colli Amerini
Malvasia” type the basis is
Malvasia Toscana (85-
100%), the remainder is
made up of Trebbiano
Toscano and others.
A good match with the
Bianco (white) is with first
courses of fresh-water fish,
fried lake fish. The Rosato
(rosé) is associated with
flavourful antipasti, risotto or
pasta with light sauces and
egg dishes. The Rosso (red)
accompanies fresh salamis,
first courses with tomato
sauces, grilled or roast white
meat, slightly mature
cheeses. Soon a new
discipline will change the
various types of wines and
the DOC name will be
“Amelia DOC”.
Terni Carsulae
the cellars become taverns and a full glass of wine is passed
around to the rhythm of “Filumé!Filumè! I want to be with
you ...” in a contest of joyfully resisting getting drunk.
At the base of the Loggia dei Priori, the shapes of a human
figure impressed on the stone witness punishment in the stocks
in the public square.
We find unusual traces of human presence in the graffiti of
the San Domenico underground, prison of the Public Office,
or in the eremitic caves near the San Cassiano Abbey.
The Gregorian Chants, illuminated in the precious Stroncone
anthem books, echo in the convents hidden in these
borderlands, where one can find oneself in the Franciscan
spirit of the remote Speco of Saint Urban.
The mountains evoke the days when places always considered
holy were visited: on the St. Erasmus mountain, Aeolus found
his home in the caves, the destination of enthusiastic
speleologists.
The oblivion of time didn’t succeed in letting Carsulae be
forgotten: walking on the large Roman paving stones we still
seem to hear the buzzing of city life remembered by Plinio for
the particular ability of the inhabitants in pruning grapevines.
In the silence of the Clarissa Convent in Montecastrilli, an
unusual painting depicts the mystery of the transformation of
Christ’s blood into wine, while not far away, in Dunarobba,
nature has kept in her clay womb the logs of the three
thousand year old Fossil Forest.
In the shelter of vigorous chestnut groves, the village of Santa
Restituta offers a living example of the medieval communities,
