FONTECOLOMBO
In the Reatine valley, another fundamental moment
of spirituality for Francis took place at the Sanctuary
of Fontecolombo, just a few kilometres south of Rieti,
on the slopes of Monte Rainiero. Here in 1221, on the
mountain known as the Franciscan “Sinai”, after forty days
of fasting, the Saint dictated his “Regula” or Rule of the
Order, which was subsequently approved or “bullata” by
Honorius III. Also here, in the Sacro Speco, the Sacred
Cavern that can still be visited today, Francis had his vision
of Christ, which gave approval to the Regula of his order.
The same place was also where Francis used his own hands
to leave the sign of the Tau, symbol of devotion
and of the dedication of his life to following Christ.
