La Valle Santa reatina: il cuore del Cammino di Francesco
The Sacred Reatine Valley: the heart of the St. Francis Walk
Il pellegrinaggio in questi luoghi tanto cari a san
Francesco è un’esperienza unica e consigliabile a tutti.
Si tratta del Cammino originario, composto da un
sistema di sentieri tra boschi e colline, praticabile
interamente a piedi, in mountain bike o a cavallo.
In ogni suo tratto, il Cammino si apre allo sguardo
nella purezza di una natura affascinante, tra distese
di prati, morbide colline e vette incontaminate,
da cui raggiungere agevolmente anche le vicine
vette innevate: dal Terminillo ai monti di Leonessa,
di Cittareale e del Cicolano, che in inverno diventano
importanti stazioni sciistiche per chi ama la montagna
e lo sport. Ma l’elemento naturale che più caratterizza
la valle è l’acqua, onnipresente tra laghi, fiumi e
ruscelli. Notevole è la Riserva naturale dei laghi Lungo
e Ripasottile, che tutela luoghi di grande fascino, resti
dell’antico Lacus Velinus, che ricopriva nella preistoria
gran parte della pianura, poi bonificata da Manio
Curio Dentato nel 272 a.C. Laghi attraversati in barca
da san Francesco e oggi ricchi di numerosi uccelli
acquatici e di una rigogliosa vegetazione ripariale.
This pilgrimage to the places that were so important
to St. Francis is a unique experience to be recommended
to everyone. This is the original Walk, made up from
a network of pathways through woods and over hills,
accessible entirely on foot, with a mountain bike or on
horseback. In each of its stages, the gaze of the visitor is
drawn to a stunning natural landscape, with far-reaching
meadows, soft rolling hills and untouched peaks, from
which it is easy to reach the nearby snow-capped summits:
from Terminillo to the Leonessa Mountains, to Cittareale
and Cicolano, which in winter become important ski resorts,
popular with those who love the mountains and winter
sports. But the natural characteristic that most distinguishes
the valley is water, which is never far away, in the form
of lakes, rivers and streams. Visitors should not miss
the Nature Reserve of the Lungo and Ripasottile Lakes,
the setting for a number of interesting sites, the remains
of the ancient Lacus Velinus, which in pre-historic times
covered most of the surrounding plain, but was drained
in 272 B.C. by Manius Curius Dentatus. In his day St. Francis
would cross the lakes in a boat; today those same lakes
are the home to many species of aquatic bird and abundant
shoreline vegetation.
