early 1900’s Italian classical style, with Murano glass,
onyx niches from Istria, two enormous Murano chandeliers,
precious marbles from various parts of Italy, a
coffered ceiling with canvasses by Palma the Younger,
transferred from Venice to Bolzano to ennoble everything
with the name of a famous 16th-century artist.
The palace features a whole series of chambers and
antechambers, even a ‘royal chamber’ with a throne.
The main entrance is protected by an antechamber
with arches and columns, followed by an atrium, the
main vestibule, the court chamber with various paintings,
the audience chamber, the music chamber,
the library, the smoking room and a gigantic festival
chamber, one of the few rooms open to the public, but
then only by invitation on special occasions.
On the fall of Italian fascism the building became the
headquarters of the local Nazi command under general
Karl Wolff. The property of the Italian state since
1958, it houses the government commissariat and as
such, can unfortunately not easily be enjoyed by the
general public even though it is a building of a
high architectural level.
