FAB MAGAZINE / MAY-JUNE 2004
The theme of this issue is:
Truths and one lie
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FAB is not a magazine.
FAB is not an abbreviation of Fabulous.
FAB is not the abbreviation of Fabrica either, even if that’s what it looks like.
FAB is an acronym for Fabrica Activity Bimonthly, but it’s not that important.
FAB really means a lot more, but we still don't know what.
FAB is about ideas that are shapeless, like clouds.
FAB believes in the power of images, but doesn’t underestimate the power of words.
FAB springs from the understanding that writing is also a visual art.
FAB celebrates mistakes, follows its own irreverence.
FAB knows that reality doesn't exist and that the horizon isn’t real.
FAB is sure that creativity is a trip rather than a destination.
FAB is made by people of different experiences and cultures that have met by chance.
FAB is nevertheless a place: if you put it on a chair you can sit on it.
P.S. All of these statements are true, except for one little lie.
Il tema di questo numero è:
Verità e una bugia
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Uncle Bill
We came to know Uncle Bill in 1992. He was a former CIA agent and after his retirement had bought
himself a desolate piece of land near the Burmese border. The area had already been deforested
and so he found only barren grass and red patches of soil on his land. In just a few months he built
himself a two-story wooden house, his only guidance being a “DIY” publication in many volumes.
Simultaneously he began to plant his 35 acres of land with teak and other types of trees that had
been growing densely there just a few years previously. He also founded a gibbon sanctuary, and
sheltered gibbons who had lost their families and natural habitats. Apes which had been shot at,
or left to vegetate chained up in backyards.
So when we got to know Uncle Bill in 1992, ‘Highland Farm’ already had a surreal atmosphere. You
could hear the apes’ cackling from far away. It was an island of green in the midst of this barren
land. A world of variety among monocultures. This impression was reinforced when I visited him again
in 1997 and 1999. Giant teak trees, green thicket, but also coffee, fruit and vegetables. Several
enclosures with gibbons, lemurs, macaques, an old bear, dogs, cats, turkeys.
Then, contact was broken off. Only in 2002 did I hear about Uncle Bill again. My father rang me
with a voice full of tears.
Uncle Bill
Contemporaneamente aveva cominciato a piantare
in quei luoghi.
landa desolata.
Cani, gatti, tacchini.
Poi, i rapporti s’interruppero.
My grandmother broke chickens’ necks
Mia nonna tirava il collo ai polli
My grandmother broke chickens’ necks.
She would take their necks and slam
them in the drawer of an old rough
wooden dresser.
They would struggle desperately until
they breathed their last and kicked
the bucket once and for all. Then
there was the plucking stage, with
hot water and an acrid smell that
spread all around.
I have not seen a chicken plucked
since then, but that noxious smell
of blanched feathers has remained
with me. Now here, in this photo,
there is a plate with a plucked bird
chopped into pieces. Disgusting.
Ever since my grandmother slaughtered
them and I watched dumbfounded,
I don’t eat any type of bird. I find
that plate of giblets horrifying.
I know that for some people the
heads of birds are a delicacy.
Not for me.
To tell the truth, I couldn’t even
tell if what is on that plate is a
chicken or another type of fowl.
But it disgusts me just the same.
I wouldn’t like to be the person in
the light blue shirt watching this
macabre scene.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Mia nonna tirava il collo ai polli.
Li prendeva per il collo e li
stringeva dentro il cassetto di una
vecchia credenza di legno grezzo,
in barchessa. Quelli si divincolavano
disperati fino a che davano gli
ultimi scossoni di vita e tiravano
le cuoia definitivamente. Poi c'era
la fase della spennatura, con l'acqua
calda e un odore acre che si
spargeva tutto intorno. Non ho mai
visto da allora spennare un pollo,
ma mi è rimasto addosso quell'odore
pestifero delle penne sbollentate.
Ora qui, in questa foto, c’è un
piatto con un uccello spennato e
fatto a pezzi. Disgustoso. Io, da
quando mia nonna li sgozzava ed io
stavo a guardarla attonito, non
mangio nessun tipo di uccello.
Quel piatto di frattaglie mi fa
orrore. So che per alcuni la testa
degli uccelli è una leccornia. Non
per me.
pennuto. Comunque, mi fa schifo lo
stesso. Non vorrei essere la persona
con la maglia azzurra che contempla
questo macabro spettacolo.
First communion
Prima comunione
I look at my son the day of his
first communion. His surprised look,
curled up on one of the kitchen
chairs, surprised by so much
happiness. My son is seven years old
and he still has his milk teeth that
he flaunts in the most radiant smile
in the world.
It is his day of glory. I watch him
as he flaunts his red bow-tie and I
don’t know why but it makes me
melancholy. The television sends out
its usual commercials, between one
soap opera and another. I don’t have
the strength to change for the
ceremony, his joy is not my joy.
I see myself at his age, but I never
had a ceremony with a red bow at my
neck. There was the revolution and
the only festive outfit was the one
of the military parades on Saturday
morning.
In reality, what I would really like
to do today is to stay here and
watch my soap operas, without lunches
and ceremonies. But I can’t, I owe
it to him. I will get changed, I
will put on make-up and I will
accompany him to the altar. I will
force myself to smile. I don’t know
if I will be able to.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Guardo il mio bambino il giorno
della sua prima comunione. Lo guardo
sorpresa, rannicchiata su una sedia
della cucina, sorpresa da tanta
felicità. Mio figlio ha sette anni e
ancora i denti da latte, che sfoggia
nel sorriso più radioso del mondo.
E’ il suo giorno di gloria. Lo
guardo mentre sfoggia il suo papillon
rosso e a me, non so perché, fa
tanta malinconia. La televisione
manda i soliti commercials, tra una
telenovela e l’altra.
mattina.
In realtà, quello che vorrei fare
oggi, sarebbe starmene qui a guardare
le mie telenovelas, senza pranzi e
cerimonie.
Ma non posso, glielo devo. Mi
cambierò, mi truccherò e lo
accompagnerò all’altare. Mi sforzerò
di sorridere. Non so se ci riuscirò.
New Year’s Eve
San Silvestro
On New Year’s Eve I always worked
in my parents’ restaurant. That
is, so to speak, a constant in
the rhythm of the passing years.
Normally, on this day, the
restaurant is booked out days
ahead. There is a menu, and on
the stroke of midnight guests as
well as staff stream out into the
garden to greet the New Year with
bangers, rockets and champagne.
On that occasion the personnel,
above all the cooks and the
Pakistani kitchen-hand, take the
greatest pleasure in throwing
Chinese crackers between the
Prada-shoed feet of the guests.
As they do that, they like to
shout “Look out: Bin Laden”
or, when we had a Vietnamese
assistant cook, “Ho Chi Minh.
Boom”. My father is at the
forefront of this activity,
lighting the bangers with his
cigar and throwing them at
the guests whose money he
has (prudently) already taken.
Before, I used to enjoy these
events as well, until New
Year’s Eve of six years ago:
I held a banger in my hand and
threw it in an arc shape into the
adjoining park. Stupidly it got
caught in the branch of a lime
tree and fell down vertically
onto the footpath, straight into
the collar of a young woman.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
La notte di San Silvestro ho
sempre lavorato nel ristorante
dei miei. È per me, come dire,
una costante che dà un certo
ritmo al passare degli anni.
Di solito, per quella data, il
ristorante è già prenotato con
giorni di anticipo. C’è un menu
fisso e allo scoccare della
mezzanotte sia i clienti che
il personale si riversano fuori
in giardino per dare il benvenuto
all’anno nuovo con botti,
razzetti e champagne. In
quell’occasione il personale,
soprattutto i cuochi e l’aiutante
pachistano, se la spassano a
lanciare petardi cinesi tra i
piedi dei clienti con le scarpe
Prada. E mentre lo fanno urlano
con gusto “Attenzione: Bin
Laden”, oppure, se c’è un
aiuto-cuoco vietnamita, “Ho Chi
Minh. Bum”. Mio padre sta
sempre in prima linea durante
quest’attività, ad accendere
petardi con il sigaro per
lanciarli sugli ospiti, da cui
ha già (prudentemente) riscosso
il denaro. Prima mi dilettavo
anch’io in queste occupazioni,
fino al capodanno di sei anni fa:
presi in mano un botto e lo
lanciai a pallonetto nel giardino
accanto. Stupidamente, restò
impigliato nel ramo di un albero
di lime e cadde in verticale
verso il sentiero, dritto dentro
al colletto di una ragazza.
Tell me a story
There was once a man who sold stories.
They didn’t cost much and most of the time he would even give them away.
Nobody knew from where he came, some people said from the North, others that he was
from another planet.
He was a small man with a round face and eyes that were close together.
He would stop passers-by and say: “I have a story for you, it won’t cost you much”,
so that even if you didn’t feel the need, you would stop because you were curious.
So he would come close and whisper some words in your ear and then stretch out his
hand and that’s how he would get some money.
I thought it was silly and also a little dishonest to sell stories like that, until I
decided to buy one too.
He looked me straight in the eyes as if he was looking for something, I felt
uncomfortable and I didn’t have any money in my pocket.
“Tell me a story”, I said.
He smiled at me and without saying anything he left, leaving me there.
In the days that followed I tried to find him but there were no traces of him.
Some people said that they had seen him get on the first train for the cities in the
West, others swear that they met him on the road not long ago.
In all these years we have often talked of him and his stories. Our children know them
all by heart, without really understanding who that man was.
They have started inventing fairy tales and legends about him.
One starts like this.
There was once a man who sold stories.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
soldi in tasca.
Wrinkles
Grinze
A flaccid body is never
attractive. I had a nanny, when I
was little, she must have been
seventy, but she seemed very old
to me. Occasionally we would take
a nap on the big bed, both of us
together.
While sleeping, if I happened to
brush against her legs or her
lap, I would jerk awake and pull
back horrified. And yet I like
wrinkles, those from expression I
mean, belonging to people who
carry their years with pride,
displayed on their foreheads or
around their lips.
But a wrinkly body, soft, flabby
is something that I can’t stand.
It literally horrifies me.
I would do anything to avoid it,
even die young. Those sagging
thighs and thin skin, those
bodies that are no longer toned
remind me of the inevitability of
death. Death doesn’t scare me as
much as the idea of ending up
with a sea of wrinkles on my
body. My nanny died when she was
over ninety, happy and wrinkled.
Maybe she was right.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Un corpo flaccido non è mai
attraente. Avevo una tata,
quando ero piccolo, sarà stata
sui settanta, ma a me pareva
vecchissima. Ogni tanto capitava
che andassimo a fare il pisolino
nel lettone, lei ed io insieme.
Se nel sonno mi capitava di
sfiorare le sue gambe, o il suo
grembo, mi svegliavo di
soprassalto e mi ritraevo
orripilato. Eppure le rughe mi
piacciono, quelle d’espressione
intendo, di chi si porta gli
anni con orgoglio esibiti sulla
fronte o sul contorno delle
labbra. Ma il corpo grinzoso,
molle, sfatto è qualcosa che non
sopporto. Mi fa letteralmente
orrore. Farei qualsiasi cosa per
evitarlo, anche morire giovane.
Quelle cosce cadenti, quella
pelle sottile, quei corpi non più
sodi mi ricordano inevitabilmente
la morte. La morte non mi
spaventa quanto la prospettiva di
finire con un mare di rughe sul
corpo. La mia tata è morta a più
di novanta anni, felice e rugosa.
Forse aveva ragione lei.
Get Up
Alzati
Who are you, lying there on the sidewalk?
Why don’t you move?
See, I know all about cats.
I’ve got five at home. I really do have
five; nobody believes me because animals
are beautiful but you’re not supposed to
have too many. Beautiful as long as they
keep their distance and don’t get close
enough to touch noses with you. But I
know five. Each one has different eyes,
a prominent profile, markings under its
nose or distinct colors on its back.
Each a cat in its own way. Each with a
different way of squinting at the sun,
of stretching its legs in the morning.
But I’m sure of one thing: no cat
ever dies. They live forever. They
continue licking their paws, ignoring the
world. I know because I’ve seen cats
fall, slip, bang, crash, but I’ve never
seen a cat die. I assume that it
can’t happen.
Chi sei tu, fermo lì sul marciapiede?
Perché non ti muovi?
Guarda che io conosco i gatti.
Ne ho cinque a casa. Cinque davvero;
nessun gatto muore. Loro vivono per
sempre. Continuano a leccarsi le zampe
noncuranti del mondo. Lo so perché ho
visto gatti cadere, scivolare,
sbattere, schiantarsi, ma mai ho visto
gatti morire. Ne deduco che questo non
può accadere.
Because they can see even in the
dark and so, once they die, they know
how to find a way out; a path in
the sun, a bit of high grass to hide
in and sleep.
That’s why you, cat, must get up now.
You can’t be dead. You’re
pretending. I’m sure of it. Cats never
die. They always pretend. And they
live forever. You’ll get up soon.
I’m sure it’ll get up.
Won’t it?
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>
devi alzare.
Non puoi essere morto. Fai finta.
Sono sicura. I gatti non muoiono mai.
Loro fingono sempre. E vivono sempre.
Tra poco ti rialzi.
Sono sicura che si rialza.
Vero?
Vinho
Vinho
While I was sinking the knife
into her milky white skin I
noticed that, on the table
in front of me, there was a
glass of wine.
Instead of augmenting my anger,
that object distracted me.
It spoiled the setting for my
revenge and nothing was like it
had been before. I felt like
someone was watching me.
The red on the table was a
presence that hung over my head.
I lost concentration, my hand
began to sweat and I wounded
her near the ear. God, how
I hate making mistakes.
My revenge ruined.
I wanted a clean line that opened
the neck, instead I had involved
the ear, and looking more
carefully, also a piece of cheek.
The blond of her hair had started
to get dirty with red on the
hairline. Now Anna looked like a
half-made-up clown.
In my mind it was supposed to be
terrifying and bloodcurdling to
remind everyone that she was just
a bitch. But now it was more
complex. Full of smudges. I tried
to salvage the final design, fix
the composition, using the knife
like it was a pencil and Anna was
my canvas.
But maybe her blood was boiling
inside, I’m not sure, because I
got squirted everywhere. Rivers
of Anna’s blood were coming out
of my mouth. How disgusting. I
left. I don’t like to leave my
work undone, but at this point it
was all ruined. As I left I took
that glass from the table. I took
a long sip to get the taste of
blood out of my mouth.
Blood or wine, it’s the same
thing for me.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Mentre affondavo il coltello
sulla sua pelle bianca candida mi
sono accorto che, sul tavolo
davanti a me, c’era un bicchiere
di vino.
Anziché accrescere la mia rabbia,
quell’oggetto mi ha distratto.
Ha rovinato il quadro della mia
vendetta e niente è stato più
come prima. Mi pareva che
qualcuno mi stesse osservando. Il
rosso sul tavolo era una presenza
che pendeva sulla mia testa. Ho
perso la concentrazione, la mano
ha iniziato a sudarmi e l’ho
ferita vicino all’orecchio. Dio
come odio sbagliare. La mia
vendetta rovinata. Volevo una
linea pulita che le aprisse il
collo invece ho coinvolto
l’orecchio, adesso che vedo bene
anche un pezzo di guancia.
Il biondo dei capelli ha iniziato
a sporcarsi di rosso sull’
attaccatura. Adesso Anna sembrava
un clown con il trucco a metà.
Nella mia testa doveva essere
terrificante e agghiacciante per
ricordare a tutti che era una
semplice stronza. Invece adesso
la cosa si faceva complessa.
Ricca di sbavature. Ho cercato di
rimediare il disegno finale,
migliorare la composizione,
usando il coltello come fosse una
matita e Anna la mia tela. Ma
forse aveva il sangue che le
ribolliva dentro, non so, perché
mi sono schizzato dappertutto.
Rivoli di sangue di Anna mi
uscivano dalla bocca. Che schifo.
Me ne sono andato. Non mi piace
lasciare i lavori a metà, ma
ormai si era rovinato tutto.
Uscendo ho preso il bicchiere dal
tavolo.
Margherita
I spent my first night out.
Incredible being out all night
with her.
And I didn’t feel cold because
she wrapped me in her gaze and
she asked me lots of questions as
if someone could really care that
when I was nine I was still
afraid of the dark.
I told her things that I’ve never
told anyone else because I thought
they were insignificant or stupid,
but no, I found her smiling and
caressing me while I told her
about the first time I went into
town alone and I took the wrong
bus and ended up outside the city.
But she was full of ‘You know I
did that too, me too, really,
incredible’.
Incredible spending the whole
night out together.
We walked without ever stopping
and I didn’t notice that time was
passing. It seems strange because
whenever I can I check the time
to know how things stand and
to see how much they have moved.
Nothing like that happened
last night.
While my mother and father
sat silently in front of the
television and my sister
talked on the phone with her
friends about guys that they’ll
never have.
While some of my school friends
were having a wank thinking about
Bonelli, Margherita and I were
running through the night until
we got to the sea.
Me and Margherita Bonelli, the
most beautiful girl in school,
and not just beautiful.
Margherita looked me right in
the eyes and told me to take her
to the sea, when you hear a
sentence like that in a film you
think that it can only happen
in the movies.
But no, because I got my bike and
I took her there and we screamed
against the waves and the only
thing that I could hear was the
sound of Margherita which seemed
like a song.
When you shout against the sea it
doesn’t send anything back to you,
but tonight I had her and that
was enough.
Margherita’s scent was like that
fragrance laundry has, the one
that I like to smell before my
mother starts ironing and all at
once I needed to have her more
and more.
Margherita
Sono stato la mia prima
notte fuori.
Incredibile tutta la notte fuori,
con lei.
E non ho sentito il freddo perché
mi teneva stretto con lo sguardo
e mi faceva tante domande come
se a qualcuno davvero potesse
interessare che a nove anni avevo
ancora paura del buio.
Le ho raccontato delle cose che
non ho mai detto a nessuno perché
pensavo fossero piccole e stupide
fuori insieme.
Abbiamo camminato senza fermarci
mai e non mi sono accorto
del tempo che passava, mi fa
strano perché io appena posso
controllo l’ora per sapere come
stanno le cose e di quanto si
sono spostate.
Niente di tutto questo ieri sera.
Mentre mia madre e mio padre se
ne stavano zitti davanti alla
televisione e mia sorella parlava
bici e ce l’ho portata e abbiamo
urlato contro le onde e l’unica
cosa che ho sentito è che il
suono di Margherita mi è sembrato
una canzone.
Il mare quando gli urli contro
non ti fa tornare niente
indietro, ma io stanotte ho avuto
lei e mi è bastato.
Margherita profumava come
quell’odore di bucato che mi
piace annusare prima che la mamma
cominci a stirare e tutto ad un
tratto ho avuto bisogno di averla
sempre di più e sempre di più.
I started to think of fire,
of a hot fire that burned my
feet leaving me light-headed.
So light it felt empty.
The strange thing was that she
felt like that too.
Then we got into the rhythm of
the waves and I don’t remember
anything.
If I think about it, it still
doesn’t seem real.
My first night out with a girl
wasn’t good for my stomach
because we started to kiss and
she lifted my shirt to touch my
stomach and I must have gotten
a draught but she was like a
tickle and even if I don’t feel
so good this morning I am happy.
Very.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>
Ho cominciato a pensare al
fuoco, ad un fuoco caldo che
mi bruciava dai piedi fino a
lasciare la testa leggera,
leggera da sembrare vuota.
La cosa strana è che anche lei.
Poi abbiamo preso il ritmo delle
onde e non mi ricordo nulla
Se ci penso, ancora non mi
sembra vero.
La mia prima notte fuori con
una ragazza mi ha fatto male
allo stomaco perché abbiamo
cominciato a baciarci e lei mi
ha alzato la maglietta per
toccarmi la pancia e io devo
aver preso un colpo di freddo ma
lei è stata come il solletico
e anche se stamattina non mi
sento troppo bene sono felice.
Molto.
Fire
Il fuoco
My parents have been running a
restaurant in Regensburg for
over 20 years. It demands a lot
of time and commitment. Because
of this as a child, my parents’
only child, I often had to look
after myself. Fortunately our
home was directly above the
restaurant and had a two-way
intercom which kept me
permanently in touch with
my parents.
One evening I was sitting in the
living room watching “Tom and
Jerry” when the breakfast table
by the window suddenly caught on
fire. I thought my parents had
lit a campfire to make the
living room cozy. I was pleased
that they cared for me even if
they were away. So I continued
to sit in front of the
television while flames were
licking high up the curtains.
However, by the time the fire
climbed up to the ceiling I
thought it was time to ask my
mother whether it was not better
if the fire was kept under
control. I went over to the
intercom, which was fixed to the
doorframe, pushed the buzzer,
and spoke into the machine with
a calm voice.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I miei genitori mandano avanti
un ristorante a Regensburg da
più di 20 anni, il che richiede
molto tempo e impegno. E,
proprio per questo motivo, da
bambino, figlio unico, sono
stato spesso lasciato da solo.
Per fortuna casa nostra si
trovava giusto sopra al
ristorante e avevamo un interfono
che mi permetteva di restare
sempre in contatto con i miei.
Una sera stavo seduto in salotto
a guardare “Tom e Jerry”, quando
il tavolino vicino alla finestra
improvvisamente ha preso fuoco.
Ho pensato i miei genitori hanno
acceso un falò per creare atmosfera
in soggiorno. Ero contento che i
miei genitori si preoccupassero
per me anche se erano lontani.
Così continuai a starmene seduto
di fronte al televisore mentre
le fiamme lambivano le tende.
Però quando il fuoco montò fino
a toccare il soffitto, pensai
che fosse giunto il momento di
chiedere a mia madre se non
fosse il caso di controllarlo.
Andai verso l’interfono, che era
fissato alla cornice della
porta, premetti il pulsante e
parlai nell’apparecchio con voce
tranquilla.
Happy Birthday
Buon Compleanno
Chicken, cotechino, eggs, wine.
Cheese, toothbrush, cookies and sanitary towels.
Today I turn thirty. Not that many but I’m not at all happy and I hate this supermarket.
I always forget to buy something and it’s the third time that I’ve had to come back.
I don’t know why I decided to celebrate tonight, I don’t feel like cooking and I don’t want
to hear my mother say that it is late.
Late to find a man who will put up with me and to have a job that doesn’t change every
month. My dad will keep quiet and my brother will start to talk about how much he paid for
his new car.
I don’t have a car, I use the bus and my bicycle, and when he starts talking I think that,
deep down, I never liked him.
Tonight maybe he’ll tell the story of how he made me stand still and keep a pigeon
on my head.
Pigeons smell and carry many diseases.
He laughed.
I was silent.
Formaggio, spazzolino, biscotti e assorbenti.
Oggi compio trent’anni.
in testa.
Io stavo zitta.
Namiko Kitaura 1 / Portfolio 2
---------------------------------------------------------------
Namiko Kitaura was born in Tokyo in 1977. Following her
experience as a freelance photographer in London and Tokyo
after her graduation from London College of Printing, Namiko is
currently an artist working at Fabrica in Italy. Her work focuses
on visualizing aspects of the almost invisible human conditions:
passion in depression, comfort in sadness, tranquillity in chaos
and beauty in ugliness. Her images have been exhibited in
London (The Retreat) and published in magazines such as Stile
(Italy), Lab (UK) and Sprout (Japan).
Namikon
---------------------------------------------------------------
Namiko reads a book 3 and smiles.
Then she gets of the bus and hides her face under a white scarf
so wide that it only leaves her eyes uncovered.
Nakimo is thinking about a possible outline for a photo. Her
eyes collect images of the world around her and select shapes
and details.
She has chosen photographs to tell stories. She shoots and
paints her thoughts with a scientific and creative eye. She adds
details to allow whole worlds to come to the surface.
The first time I saw her hunting for a shot was on the bus to
come from Treviso to Fabrica 4 . Today we are to meet so she can
tell me about her work.
We meet at the tables near the coffee machine.
“Anything I read or anything that comes into my head has been
transformed into images ever since I was little.”
She was born in Japan but it was the Western culture of
London and Milan that pushed her to regain possession of her
culture of origin.
After a few years as a fashion photographer, in a very cool
atmosphere, in the vortex of photographic sets packed with
assistants, she began a minimalist search that she
continues today.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Now here pieces are image haiku, little thoughts that
become poems 5 .
“If I think about it I could say that I have gone through three
periods. In the first I was a fashion photographer applying
esthetic criteria taken from Caravaggio’s art or from museums
that I visited.
I like the encroachment of painting on fashion but also because it
was through painting that my fascination with images began 6 .”
She uses gestures while she speaks and shifts her weight from
one foot to another as if she has too many things to say and
not much time to say them.
“I fled from Japan. I didn’t feel a part of Oriental culture and
so at eighteen I found myself in London. Then something
happened inside me.”
She pauses for an instant and searches for the right words,
she speaks both Italian and English well. To avoid being
misunderstood she prefers to speak Italian with me. She
pronounces ‘r’ and smiles.
“The distance from Japan helped me rediscover it. I started
to study and do research into its traditions and uniqueness.
That was the beginning of my second period, much more
minimalist and symbolic. My photos represent concepts
and moods.”
So the images started to change. Her photos are filled with
strong symbolism. This was the word that she had been
searching for these last few minutes: Symbolism.
She seems small and defenseless behind the camera, but when
it is time to shoot she becomes silent and professional, she
starts on her subjects/ objects with the care of an anxious
mother and you could spend hours watching her.
Her and her work.
---------------------------------------------------------------
“Since I’ve been here my point of view has changed again.
At Fabrica I opened my mind and began to relate to very
concrete things. I have felt a strong moral need in my work,
which I didn’t feel before.
Now I need to deal with social realities. That’s why I started
photographing the homeless in Bologna. I spent several days
with them and listened to their stories.
The shots were taken at the end, as a final result of my contact
with them.”
The tools are reduced to the essential, just the right light and
some music 7 .
“What do you want to work on now?”
“This barrage of images to which we are subjected made me
think about those who can’t see, to what happens in the mind
of those who can’t see to believe. We can do it and we are
completely dependent on objects and on their visual
representation, but they can’t. Seeing is believing? Maybe they
believe to see…I don’t know. I’m working on it. I’m thinking
about it. For example I would like to understand what their
houses are like. I will go and visit them, we will talk, I will stay
with them and try to find the right trigger.”
And I’m already thinking about how Nakimo’s next photos will
look. I think that perhaps we could think about doing a
project together 8 .
I ask her if there is something else she would like to say and
she seems sure when she says No.
We say goodbye and I begin to transcribe the interview.
A few minutes later I hear someone coming quickly up the
stairs. I try to concentrate and ignore it but soon the tiny steps
are accompanied by a voice.
“There’s something else I want to say…”, I stop writing, turn
around. Nakimo is out of breath.
“There is something else I want to say! It’s about my family who
has been a great influence on me since I was a child. My
grandfather was a composer and my mother a singer.
I would like to say that they have been very important.
And that’s why I release with music, if I can, especially very
loud music! Can you write that?”
“I’ll write it, I’ll definitely write it.”
“OK. Thanks. Thanks a lot.”
Namiko walks away calmly. I start writing again.
circonda e selezionano forme e particolari.
Ha scelto la fotografia per raccontare storie. Scatta e dipinge i
Dopo è accaduto qualcosa dentro di me.”
preferisce usare l’italiano.
Ho
cominciato a studiare e a fare ricerca sulle sue tradizioni
e simbolista. Le mie foto rappresentavano concetti e
stati d’animo.”
Allora l’immagine inizia a cambiare.
vista. A Fabrica ho aperto la mente e ho cominciato a
rapportarmi a cose molto concrete.
L’ attrezzatura è ridotta all’essenziale, bastano la luce giusta
e un po’ di musica 7 .
“A cosa vuoi lavorare ora?”
dicendomi No.
Ci salutiamo e inizio a trascrivere l’intervista.
compositore e mia madre cantante.
“Ok. Grazie. Tante grazie.”
Namiko si allontana con calma. Io ricomincio a scrivere.
a novel she would suggest: “The Devil in the Flesh” by Raymond Radiguet. / 4 The bus is the
Fabricanti and a few Trevigians. / 5 Haiku is a type of poetry popular in Japan which has become
more widely appreciated around the world over the last century. Haiku writers are challenged
to convey a vivid impression in only 17 Japanese characters. / 6 When Namiko said this she was
thinking about Lady Lilith by Dante Rossetti painted circa 1886. / 7 In the shower Namiko sings
Qualcun qui m’ a dit que tu m’aimes ancore, by Carla Bruni. She redeems herself by suggesting
you listen to Arabic and Irish music. / 8 We have already decided on a title for the project: Oltre
la visione (Beyond vision). Often at Fabrica you have an idea and then talk about it with someone
else. The sharing, contamination of different expressive mediums can turn an inspiration or an
idea into something bigger and better.
Hello Sara,
I hope you can find
something in what I will
write.
----------------------------------
What was your first
picture about? And
when did you take it?
I took many of my first
pictures at school. They
were pictures of friends,
events, animals, insects
and even fights in the
playground.
Your father introduced
you to photography,
what kinds of photos
does he take, what kind
of work does he do?
My dad sent me to a
photography summer
school in Bristol when I
was young. I remember
not wanting to go but
that’s where the magic
happened. I was hooked
and amazed by the
medium, and even today
it can amaze me in the
same way.
My dad is a technical
genius. He worked as a
chemist and was more
interested in the technical
side of photography than
what it could convey.
He gave me enormous
support and a great
understanding of what
was possible and
allowed me to move
forward and take
pictures without thinking
only about technique
quite early.
You began restoring old
photos, does it influence
your work? Who are
your influences?
When I was restoring
and handling other
people’s photographs, I
understood that I wanted
to create my own images.
I can’t really pin down
any direct influences, but
I have to say that music
gives me a great deal.
Currently I am enjoying
the work of Fukase,
Sergio Larrain, Anders
Peterson, Atget, Joan
Van der Keukens, Paris
photographs and Boris
Mikailov (of course). He
has the ability to convey
horror, beauty, subtitles
and humor in life like I
have never seen in
photographs before.
Could you resume the
concept of your work in
few words?
My work really varies.
Sometimes I create very
rigid series over a period
of time that captures
something that I have
in my head and, when
I work this way, I leave
my house looking for
certain things to photograph.
Some other times,
instead, I simply respond
and react to the subject
and let it go. The work
is less rigid and usually
less cold. Sometimes I
give myself boundaries.
These boundaries could
be a place, a color, a
person, anything.
When do you use color
and when black and
white?
I photograph in color
99% of the time these
days. This transition
occurred in 1997 after
photographing in black
and white for about
10 years.
Moving to color was like
learning a new language
altogether. Now I talk
only in color.
What about your new
projects?
My new projects
are assembling eight
photographic pieces that
will be published in June
2004 by Chris Boot in the
title Field Studies.
I continue to photograph
in Britain and I am
currently being carried
by that.
Could you describe to
us what you see when
you step outside your
house?
It depends what mood
I am in, sometimes
everything looks
beautiful and sometimes
it looks like a pulped fruit.
How do you choose your
subjects?
I know this sounds a bit
pretentious, but I try not
to choose subjects, I wait
for things to fall into my
head and trust instincts.
I try not to ask myself
questions like: will it
work? Will I like it? Will
other people like it?
Can I publish or exhibit
the work?
Sometimes it’s easier to
act than question them
too much and I
feel if you question something
too much rather
than getting it out of your
system, the whole thing
looses momentum.
How long do you spend
looking at a photo
before knowing if it
is good or bad?
Usually you know
instantly. Sometimes you
have to let the picture
breathe and live with it
for a while.
What are you reading
now? Have you ever
written something, a
short story for example?
I don’t write.
I was introduced to the
Czech writer Hrabal’s 3
work a few years ago
and I still enjoy his books
very much.
If you think you have
been quite honest until
now, tell us your most
recent lie.
My most recent lie was
about three minutes
ago. I told someone that
I enjoyed working with
them very much 4 .
E-mail spedita da
Ciao Sara,
spero che troverai
qualcosa d’interessante
in quello che ti sto
scrivendo.
----------------------------------
Qual è stato il soggetto
della tua prima foto? E
quando l’hai scattata?
Molte delle mie prime
foto le ho fatte a scuola.
Erano foto di amici, di
situazioni, di animali, di
insetti, ma anche di risse
al campo sportivo.
È stato tuo padre a
introdurti alla fotografia.
Che tipo di foto fa, qual
è il suo lavoro?
Mio padre, quando ero
piccolo, m’iscrisse a un
corso estivo di fotografia.
Mi ricordo che non
volevo andarci, ma che
poi fu lì che scoppiò la
magia. Ero “soggiogato”
e stupefatto da questo
mezzo che ancora oggi
continua a sbalordirmi
come allora.
Mio padre è un genio
della tecnica. Lavorava
come chimico ed era
interessato più al lato
tecnico che a ciò che
poteva trasmettere la
fotografia. Mi ha aiutato
tantissimo perché è lui
che mi ha fatto davvero
capire quali fossero tutte
le possibilità che la
fotografia poteva avere,
permettendomi di fare
progressi e, in poco
tempo, di realizzare le
mie foto senza dover più
pensare alla tecnica.
Hai cominciato
restaurando vecchie
foto. Quanto, questa
esperienza, ha
influenzato il tuo
lavoro? E quali sono le
tue influenze?
Quando mi occupavo di
restaurare e ritoccare le
foto degli altri, ho capito
che volevo creare mie
immagini.
Non posso davvero
rintracciare influenze
dirette, ma devo dire che
la musica mi ha dato
molto. Mi piace come
lavorano Fukase, Sergio
Larrain, Anders Peterson,
Atget, Joan Van der
Keukens, i fotografi
parigini e Boris Mikailov
(ovviamente). Ha la
capacità di trasmettere
l’orrore, la bellezza,
addirittura le sottigliezze
e l’ironia della vita come
nessun altro fotografo
prima di lui.
Puoi riassumere in
poche parole il concetto
del tuo lavoro?
Il mio lavoro è vario.
A volte creo una serie
di foto statiche, in un
determinato periodo di
tempo, per cercare di
catturare qualcosa che
ho in testa e, quando
lavoro in questo modo,
esco di casa cercando
alcune cose specifiche
da fotografare.
Altre volte, invece, mi
basta solo rispondere
e reagire al soggetto lasciandomi
andare.
Il lavoro così è meno
concettuale e, di solito,
meno freddo. Altre volte
mi pongo dei limiti.
Questi limiti possono
essere un posto, un
colore, una persona,
qualunque cosa.
Quando usi il colore e
quando il bianco e nero?
Attualmente, nel 99% dei
casi, fotografo a colori.
Ho iniziato nel 1997, dopo
aver fotografato in bianco
e nero per circa 10 anni.
Passare al colore è stato
come imparare da capo
una nuova lingua. Ora
parlo solo a colori.
Cosa ci racconti dei tuoi
nuovi progetti?
I miei nuovi progetti
riguardano una
composizione di otto
pezzi fotografici che
saranno pubblicati nel
giugno del 2004 da
Chris Boot. Il titolo sarà:
Field Studies.
Continuo a fare foto in
Gran Bretagna e la cosa
mi entusiasma.
Potresti descriverci
quello che vedi quando
esci di casa?
Dipende dall’umore in
cui mi sento, a volte tutto
sembra bellissimo e a
volte ha l’aspetto di un
frutto marcio.
Come scegli i tuoi
soggetti?
So che può sembrare
un po’ pretenzionso, ma
cerco di non scegliere i
soggetti, aspetto che le
cose “cadano dal cielo”
e mi affido all’istinto.
Cerco di non pormi
troppe domande del tipo:
funzionerà? Mi piacerà?
Piacerà agli altri? Potrò
pubblicarlo o esporlo?
A volte è più facile
agire piuttosto che
farsi troppe domande
e ho la sensazione che
quando mi pongo troppi
interrogativi, invece di
aiutarmi a portare alla
luce la risposta, va a
finire che perdo di vista
anche la domanda…
Quanto tempo passi
a guardare una
foto prima di sapere
se è bella o brutta?
Di solito lo sai
immediatamente, ma a
volte devi lasciare
respirare la foto, viverci
insieme per un po’.
Cosa stai leggendo
adesso? Hai mai scritto
qualcosa, un racconto,
ad esempio?
Non scrivo.
Qualche anno fa mi
hanno fatto conoscere
uno scrittore ceco che
si chiama Hrabal 3 e
ancora oggi i suoi libri
mi
piacciono moltissimo.
Se pensi di essere stato
abbastanza sincero
finora, raccontaci la tua
bugia più recente.
La mia bugia più recente
l’ho detta tre minuti fa.
Ho detto a certa gente
che mi era piaciuto molto
lavorare con loro 4 .
The goal of “Hand coded” is to create an ever-changing self-portrait. Enrique R Grullon has written a code that calculates
his exact age in seconds. He collected statistical rates and multiplied his age by these rates. As time passes and he
gets older, the product of the code changes. So the viewer can see what has happened since his date of birth. The
result can be viewed online: www.co8.com/hand-coded.
“Hand coded” nasce dalla volontà di creare un autoritratto in continua mutazione. Enrique R Grullon ha elaborato un
codice che calcola esattamente la sua età in secondi. Poi, ha raccolto una serie di percentuali statistiche moltiplicando
modo possiamo vedere cosa è successo dalla sua data di nascita fino ad oggi. Il risultato è visibile online:
I read The Dressing Station a year ago, at a time when I thought that graphic design was not helpful and essential
enough. In this book the author Jonathan Kaplan tells the story of his life. He started off as a medical student and later
worked in nearly every field medicine has to offer. He describes the brutal truth of third world countries, the bloody
reality in war territories, the helplessness of a flying doctor in Africa. And although he constantly doubts his efforts,
doubts if it is good to operate on a soldier only so that he can be sent back to war, he describes how he can make a
change as just one person. When I read the book, I really had the strong desire to change my life, to forget about
graphic design and to start studying medicine.
In the end, I stuck to graphic design, because I think it’s not the job that is helpful to the world we live in, it is more
what you make out of it, your personal attitude. You can also be a doctor and only think about your profits. So in
my job I can make the decision whether I want to make stupid advertisements or put my knowledge to social or
educational projects.
Still I sometimes think about becoming a doctor or something completely different. Maybe a peaceful job like
selling flowers.
I find it’s hard to link films to my love experiences. I have really deep intense feelings for people and films are always a
bit separate from this. I’d like to think objectively about them, if I can. Also I constantly keep falling in love with different
things and people, so I really can’t say what my first love was. It always seems to be the first time. I think I am very
impulsive in these types of things. But I can remember the first time I went out with a girl. She was like 16 and I was 12
and we went to the cinema, to see Buddy’s Song, a film starring Chesney Hawkes, a pop star. A really terrible film.
Anyway, we were with some other friends and they were all sitting down when I got up to go to the toilet.
And, when I came back, instead of walking along the row, I tried to climb over but I got stuck and fell on top of people.
Every time I think about it, it makes me blush a little bit, not because I think it hilarious, but embarrassing. The other
terrible thing about the film was the scene where a girl reveals her breasts. It was so embarrassing I could have died.
I was 12 and the girl next to me was much older. So I was sitting there thinking “don’t look, don’t look”. In the end
nothing happened with her because after all that I don’t think I was capable of speaking to her properly.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
e pensare soltanto a fare soldi.
completamente diverso.
Così me ne stavo seduto pensando “non
WHAT MUSIC SOLVED A PROBLEM IN YOUR LIFE?
QUALE MUSICA TI HA AIUTATO A RISOLVERE UN
PROBLEMA NELLA VITA?
RAPHAEL CAMENISCH 5
First I have to ask myself: Is music able to solve problems at all? I don’t really think so. I see music more as a midwife
for the soul.
Music can release your feelings, music can give them a shape, a voice but it still doesn’t solve problems. Music is an
intensifier for feelings.
You can ask to what extent intensified feelings stimulate your thoughts, and thus indirectly solve problems. But, yet,
this is not my case.
I remember for example listening to Brahms third symphony (op. 90), third movement every time I felt blue, or
lovelorn. Listening to it, the music was not a solution to my problems, it was an amplification of my problems. It was a
way of yielding to the pain, to the longing. You let yourself go with the music and your feelings. And maybe it becomes
a way to see the situation in a different light.
I was in that three-person relationship over half a year, where we all thought there could be a solution. In the end it
broke up dramatically. That was one of the occasions for me to listen to Brahms.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
intensifica i tuoi sentimenti.
Potresti chiedermi fino a che punto questi sentimenti “intensificati” possano stimolare i tuoi pensieri e quindi,
indirettamente, risolvere i problemi.
giù e col cuore a pezzi.
Robert and Clara Schumann were good friends of young Johannes until the situation became complicated: Brahms fell
madly in love with Clara who was his elder by fourteen years. The relationship between the two brought young Brahms only insecurity and pain, just as Schumann had predicted.
Schumann soon fell ill, Clara distanced herself from Brahms and their dreams never came to fruition.
5
True Love and one Lie
the rays form the Yin and Yang
Beautiful!
Solo pochi metri più in là…
Quite cute,
Hey John,
Fantastico,
Bellissimo!
Guarda, Janet. John sta
Che carino, eh?
Hey John, fai le
FEATURES
01_Isotype Sketchbooks
Fabrica Features collection of objects was created in an attempt to
transcend the traditional demarcation lines between market and
design, contemplation of aesthetics and use, product and
communication. The Fabrica Features collection is aimed at various
types of stories, from purely commercial outlets to cultural ones,
from specialized stores to shops of art museums.
Facendo leva su
questo,
Isabella può
ottenere
qualsiasi cosa...
Purtroppo
Janet è stata
più veloce…
Ehi, Mark, visto che sei nuovo qui a Fabrica,
vorrei invitarti a cena stasera…
You should think about who you go out
with. I had a look at your portfolio and
if you don´t want ...
little secret, you will have to be
nice to me ...
Janet!
You bitch! No one will ever find out about me. It has
always been my dream to come here, and you won´t
destroy it!
