Patient-important outcomes in clinical medicine: applying Evidence-
Based Medicine
Evaluation of pharmacotherapy
I’m going to speak about applying Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) in the
evaluation of pharmacotherapy. This presentation is heavily based on the work by Dr.
Victor Montori and several other people who have been involved in publishing a paper
on this topic in the British Medical journal. I’m showing you an example of what we see
with increasing frequency in medical literature – an example of a systematic review. A
systematic review is a review of the literature that tries to avoid bias in evaluating
information.
Antman et al., JAMA, 1992; 268: 240-248
This slide shows a cumulative meta-analysis published in 1992 in JAMA, one of
the most important medical journals. Authors looked at therapy for myocardial
infarction. I will use examples from across medical literature because the examples I’m
showing you here are in fact relevant for oncology as well as surgery and any other
