Sükran è alla ricerca del figlio ventenne Veysel scomparso in circostanze misteriose insieme al suo migliore
amico Halil. La polizia mostra a Sükran il corpo di un giovane che potrebbe essere Veysel: la fidanzata del
ragazzo conferma, mentre la madre nega l’identificazione. Sükran viene poi a sapere che un detenuto con lo
stesso nome di suo figlio è evaso, probabilmente diretto alla cittadina di Mardin, e si mette a cercarlo. Innowhereland
è il primo lungometraggio di Tayfun Pirselimoğlu, vincitore del premio speciale della giuria al
Montreal World Film Festival.
“Tantissime persone sono sparite dagli anni 80 in poi, nessuno ne conosce il numero esatto, e ancora oggi le
madri degli scomparsi si radunano a Istanbul il sabato. Alcune di queste madri compaiono in Innowhereland
e le autorità hanno cercato di proibire la visione film”.
Sükran is searching for her 20-year-old son Veysel, who disappeared under mysterious circumstances with his
best friend Halil. When the police show her the body of a young man that could be Veysel, his girlfriend identifies
it but Sükran insists it is not her son. She discovers that a prisoner with her son’s same name has escaped
from jail and is headed to the town of Mardin, and sets out to find him. Innowhereland is Tayfun Pirselimoğlu’s
debut feature, and winner of the Special Grand Prize of the Jury at the Montreal World Film Festival.
“There were a lot of missing people – no one knows the exact number – after the 1980s and still today the mothers
of the disappeared get together in Istanbul on Saturdays. Some of these mothers were in Innowhereland and
the authorities tried to ban the film.”
Quando il motore del suo camion ha un guasto, Riza resta senza lavoro e rischia anche che il mezzo di trasporto
gli venga tolto. Mentre cerca di trovare il denaro necessario per ripararlo, si sistema in uno squallido albergo
dove vivono altre persone in difficoltà: un anziano passa il tempo guardando la tv e aspettando il ritorno del
figlio; un giovane kurdo spera di ottenere un lavoro in fabbrica; un marinaio omosessuale attende di partire
per l’America; un afgano e sua nuora progettano di emigrare in modo irregolare in Italia. Riza apre la Trilogia
della coscienza e della morte.
“Dostoevskij ha dimostrato quanto possano essere terribili le storie delle persone cosiddette normali. Il mio
film segue una persona comune, un autista il cui destino doloroso rispecchia quelli di tanti altri nel suo paese.
La vita di quest’uomo è monotona: mangia, guarda la tv, aspetta. Per lui ogni mattina segna l’inizio di un
nuovo giorno vuoto e senza speranza”.
When his truck breaks down, Riza cannot work and risks losing his only means of transport. While trying to
scrape together the money to fix it, he takes a room in a squalid hotel inhabited by other troubled souls: an old
man who spends his days watching TV and waiting for his son’s return; a young Kurd hoping to get a factory
job; a gay sailor waiting to leave for America; an Afghani and his daughter-in-law who plan to emigrate to
Italy illegally. Riza opens the “Trilogy of Conscience of Death”.
“Dostoyevsky demonstrated how terrible the stories of socalled ordinary people can be. My film follows an ordinary
truck driver, one whose fate and suffering mirrors that of many others in his country. His life is monotonous:
eating, watching TV, waiting. Each morning brings another uneventful day without hope”.
