Helga Fanderl
Helga Fanderl (Ingolstadt, Germania, 1947) vive tra Parigi e Francoforte. Dopo gli studi di lingua e letteratura
tedesca, francese e italiana, scopre il Super8 e frequenta la Städelschule di Francoforte con Peter Kubelka, e
la Cooper Union di New York con Robert Breer. A partire dai primi anni Novanta comincia a presentare il suo
lavoro in festival, cineteche, musei di arte contemporanea e gallerie d’arte in Europa e negli Stati Uniti. Ha realizzato
oltre 900 film. Dal 2014 è impegnata nella realizzazione di un catalogue raisonné della sua opera.
Poetessa dell’immagine, Helga Fanderl posa il suo sguardo curioso e intenso sulla realtà, trasfigurandola. Un
gesto, un volto, un animale, una fontana, o qualsiasi altra sollecitazione visiva sono catturate attraverso
l’obiettivo di una cinepresa Super8 che Fanderl porta quasi sempre con sé. Cinepresa a mano e montaggio in
camera gli elementi costitutivi del suo cinema dell’immediatezza e frenesia emozionale. Fanderl non presenta
mai i suoi film singolarmente, ma componendo per ciascuna proiezione una o più costellazioni visive.

Helga Fanderl (Ingolstadt, Germany, 1947) divides her time between Paris and Frankfurt. After studying German,
French and Italian language and literature, she discovered Super 8 and studied at the Stadelschule in Frankfurt
with Peter Kubelka and The Cooper Union in New York with Robert Breer. Her works have screened at festivals,
cinematheques, contemporary art museums and art galleries in Europe and the US since the early 1990s. She
has made over 900 films. In 2014 she began to compile a catalogue raisonné of her work.
A poet of the image, Fanderl rests her curious and intense gaze on reality, transforming it. A gesture, face, animal,
fountain or any other visual solicitation is captured through the Super 8 camera that Fanderl almost always
carries with her. Handheld camera work and in-camera editing are the fundamental traits of her
immediate cinema of emotional frenzy. Fanderl never presents her films individually, but creates for each screening
one or more visual constellations.
