II. A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CABLEWAY • KLEINE GESCHICHTE DER SEILBAHN • BREVE STORIA DEGLI IMPIANTI A FUNEEarly cableways for passenger transport: The beginning wasmarked in 1907 by a single-cabin aerial cableway with a slightslope that ran barely 300 meters (a thousand feet) over avalley, with nearly the same construction then used in 1916at Niagara Falls. The first Kohlern-Bahn (1908–10) connecteda nearby recreation area; this cableway had a slope of up to80 percent. The cableway on the Sugar Loaf in Rio de Janeiro, which is used by tourists, had two carrying cables, one tractioncable, and one auxiliary cable. Pioneer work with regard tocable tensioning, the braking system, and voice communicationvia the cable was provided by the cableway inaugurated in1923 from Meran to Hafling, Italy, the connection of a city witha mountain village.
