2° Itinerario 30 8. Il Tempio, o Foro, del<strong>la</strong> Pace Il primo dei Fori Imperiali che si incontra provenendo dal Colosseo è in realtà il meno visibile, in quanto i suoi resti sono quasi totalmente sepolti sotto il manto stradale. Solo una picco<strong>la</strong> parte di esso, oggetto di scavi tuttora in corso, è visibile nell’area compresa tra <strong>la</strong> chiesa dei Ss. Cosma e Damiano e <strong>la</strong>rgo del<strong>la</strong> Sa<strong>la</strong>ra Vecchia. Sotto l’imperatore Vespasiano, padre di Tito e Domiziano e fondatore del<strong>la</strong> dinastia dei F<strong>la</strong>vi, iniziò <strong>la</strong> costruzione di un’enorme area occupata da giardini e delimitata da un quadriportico. Questa piazza monumentale, una delle più belle del<strong>la</strong> <strong>Roma</strong> antica, era dominata dal<strong>la</strong> presenza del tempio dedicato al<strong>la</strong> Pace, che trasmise <strong>la</strong> stessa denominazione all’intero complesso architettonico, chiamato quindi Templum Pacis e, più tardi, Foro del<strong>la</strong> Pace. Il tempio venne edificato per celebrare <strong>la</strong> conquista di Gerusalemme nel 70 d.C. e, secondo <strong>la</strong> tradizione, nel<strong>la</strong> sua cel<strong>la</strong>, oltre a numerose opere d’arte greca, erano conservati gli oggetti sacri al<strong>la</strong> religione ebraica, tra i quali <strong>la</strong> famosa menorah, il cande<strong>la</strong>bro a sette bracci. 9. Il Foro di Nerva, o Transitorio dei F<strong>la</strong>vi, Domiziano, fece erigere nello spazio ancora L’ultimo libero tra il Templum Pacis, il Foro di Augusto, il Foro di Cesare e il <strong>la</strong>to nord-orientale del Foro <strong>Roma</strong>no, un proprio foro monumentale. Si trattava di una grande piazza lunga e stretta ornata da colonne formanti uno pseudo-portico e sostenenti rilievi forse collegati al mito di Aracne, di cui ci resta una sezione con una figura di Minerva e scene di <strong>la</strong>vori femminili. In corrispondenza dei rilievi, restano due colonne che nei secoli passati vennero dette “le Colonnacce”. Sullo sfondo si trovava il tempio dedicato al<strong>la</strong> dea Minerva, divinità del<strong>la</strong> quale Domiziano era fervente devoto, del quale resta il podio riportato al<strong>la</strong> luce durante gli scavi degli anni Trenta del Novecento. Le colonne e i marmi residui del tempio furono utilizzati da papa Paolo V, nel 1606, per <strong>la</strong> costruzione del<strong>la</strong> Fontana dell’Acqua Pao<strong>la</strong> sul Gianicolo. All’interno di questo foro furono sistemate grandi statue di imperatori, ma Domiziano non poté ultimare <strong>la</strong> sua opera perché fu ucciso nel 96 d.C. in una congiura di pa<strong>la</strong>zzo. Fu il suo successore, l’anziano imperatore Nerva, a inaugurare nel 97 <strong>la</strong> piazza, che per <strong>la</strong> sua funzione di passaggio e di collegamento con i fori precedenti fu detta Foro Transitorio.
