High Potential
It is a demanding yet stimulating task to be president of a dynamic company like Rodriquez Cantieri Navali, especially when
one is replacing such a talented and capable person as my predecessor, Dr. Antonino Parisi. After the Piaggio venture, the
acquisition of Rodriquez represents, for IMMSI, a further significant step forward in its strategy of creating an important
industrial group operating in the transport sector. I believe deeply in the potential of Rodriquez, a company that is renowned
worldwide for its products with a high technological content, and I am certain that, together with the present management,
the company can gain new market shares both in Italy and abroad. The company management has done an excellent job
up to now, boosting turnover by more than one hundred per cent and penetrating new markets. The overriding aim now is
to allow Rodriquez Cantieri Navali to develop still further. IMMSI is fully aware of Rodriquez’s great potential and, with the
necessary strategic and financial support, is committed to further improving the group’s already brilliant results.
Alto potenziale
News
Rodriquez Cantieri Navali has a new major
shareholder.
On the 26th of May 2004, IMMSI, a company headed by Roberto Colanninno, acquired a majority shareholding in Rodriquez
Cantieri Navali.
the acquisition was made through a new company, RCN Finanziaria, led by IMMSI (50,9%) with their partners Banca Intesa (Private
Equity) (22,6%) and General Electric (26,5%). RCN Finanziaria’s investment makes them the majority shareholder of Rodriquez
Cantieri Navali, who in turn is the parent company of four shipbuilding facilities yards in Italy and one in Brasil as well as other
specialized companies. The new shareholding of Rodriquez Cantieri Navali is now 78,2% RCN Finanziaria, 10,9% MRS Sviluppo (the
management of RCN) and 10,9% Ustica Lines (a Sicilian shipping company). Luciano La Noce is now the new President and Giovanni
Morace will continue in his role as the Managing Director.
IMMSI’s investment will further strengthen the position of the yard as well as provide for the
development of Rodriquez, allowing them to leverage their strengths as an engineering driven
and innovative company active in the international shipbuilding market of high speed ships, fast
Ro-Pax’s, luxury yachts and military craft.
Commenting on the agreement, Roberto Colaninno, (in the picture) President of IMMSI, states
that “the Rodriquez operation is coherent with the industrial investment strategy of IMMSI to
develop a leading Italian group in the fields of transport and mobility who can develop innovative
new products suitable for the new needs of the market.”
Nuovo socio di maggioranza per la
Rodriquez Cantieri Navali
società facente capo a Roberto Colaninno.
LUXURY
ON BOARD
Yachting is a way of socializing for
people of all backgrounds. And within
this market, Italian designers are some
of the most highly regarded in the world.
according to a common belief,
wealth, income, and conspicuous
consumption are three closely related
variables. It is easy to imagine that
wealth is both the source and the effect of
a high income, although this correlation
needs to be verified in each case. As far
as the conspicuous consumption of luxury
goods is concerned, this is normally the
manifestation of the other two factors,
with the possible exception of situations
involving debt.
The three variables above are intertwined
in a model such as: the state of wealth in
a consumer society is established, firstly,
by the qualitative level of the consumption;
secondly by the relative level of the income;
and thirdly by the overall level of the individual’s
or family wealth. Of the three
variables listed, it is the qualitative level,
defined as conspicuous, sophisticated, and
dynamic, that has a special symbolic value.
In marked contrast to the old class-based
model of society, there are new groups that
combine different lifestyles. These are no
longer arranged hierarchically, but coexist
with each other. Prestige, which justified
conspicuous consumption, has become an
ambiguous and in some ways, irrelevant
category. People prefer to focus on better
lifestyles by surrounding themselves with
products that improve their quality of life.
Prestige, as a motivation imposed on us that
presides over consumption, is replaced by a
quest for recognition of the individual’s ability
to choose good taste, based on personal
preferences, along with a deep knowledge
of the sector.
In addition to these improved lifestyles, resulting
from particular types of consumption,
there is also a desire to express one’s true
personality and not just to be different from
and/or superior to other people. The quest
for individuality and a sense of one’s own
identity is now regarded as a fundamental
value of the post-modern society. The types
of consumption relative to certain lifestyles,
to which people have a sense of belonging
that they wish to communicate to others, includes
the upscale segment of yachting.
This is a market in which the turnover of the
Italian boatyards is second only to those in
the United States. After surpassing their British
rivals some years ago, the Italians now
export about eighty per cent of their output.
And this is also a market that doesn’t seem
to have been affected by possible negative
effects present conflicts may be having on
other luxury items. Motivational analysis
seems to demonstrate that Italians have
not abandoned conspicuous consumption
and world events are encouraging
consumers to spend their money on luxury
items that are, however, less ostentatious.
According to the experts, people want to
pamper themselves and they seek refuge
in a parallel world where serenity and fantasy
reign supreme.
After the minimalism of the early 1990s
and the choice of inconspicuous consumption
which was also due to the economic
crises and the preference for low-profile
lifestyles, there is now a very favorable
attitude to spending. And there’s a notable
propensity, rarely seen in the past,
for luxury because the concept of luxury
has changed radically. Previously there
was only luxury to show off to the others
but now luxury means treating oneself
well, having self-esteem, spending money
without worrying about whether the label
is clearly visible, and, at the same time, increasing
the quality of one’s life and one’s
level of personal satisfaction. But let’s go
6
by Mario Centorrino
back to the title of this article. How can we
explain what has been described rather
picturesquely as “luxury with the wind to
your back”, a market segment involving
numerous Italian firms catering to the needs
of customers all over the world?
The experts explain that in reality the yards
operating in the luxury yachting sector produce
big toys and people will do without
useful things but not without something with
which they can have fun such as yachts.
They are in demand both when prices soar
on the stock exchange and there’s more
money to spend and also when shares
plummet. Many people think that it’s better
to enjoy life with a beautiful boat rather
than get an ulcer following the stock-market
(Panorama, 18 October 2001).
Another sociological note: the luxury yachting
is very expensive, whilst in the case of
megayachts there’s perhaps a desire to
quantify the owner’s success. Looking at
it from another point of view, there’s the
acquisition of a precious means of socialization.
This allows individuals with high net worth
to come into contact with people like themselves
and to be able create a network of
very useful acquaintances without the risk of
encountering information asymmetries.
Lastly, what is now a well-known fact, Italian
boat designers are the most renowned
and highly regarded in the sector and they
are sought after by the world’s leading
yards to give their boats the special Italian
touch that further enhances them.
Now luxury means increasing the quality of one’s life.
LUSSO A BORDO
personale o familiare. Sicchè, delle
tre variabili elencate, è proprio il livello
qualitativo dei consumi, definibili come
ostentati, sofisticati, dinamici, a ricoprire
un particolare valore simbolico. Rispetto
al vecchio schema classista della società
stanno subentrando nuovi “clusters” che
aggregano stili di vita. Non più disposti
gerarchicamente, ma coesistenti l’uno a
fianco all’altro con pari dignità. Il prestigio,
che giustificava consumi ostentati, si
sostiene, è divenuto una categoria ambigua
e, per certi aspetti, irrilevante. L’ambizione
semmai è a vivere meglio, a contornarsi
di prodotti che migliorano la qualità
della vita. Al prestigio subentra – come
motivazione eterodiretta che presiede al
consumo – la ricerca di riconoscimenti per
le proprie capacità di scegliere, dovuta a
qualità personali, al buon gusto, a una
profonda conoscenza del settore.
Vivere meglio, dunque, attraverso particolari
rivali britannici, esportando all’incirca l’80
esclusivi. Le analisi motivazionali sembrano
dimostrare che gli italiani non hanno
rinunziato a consumi costosi; e che la
forte tendenza a rimuovere gli orrori della
guerra sta spingendo i consumatori verso
acquisti impegnativi anche se forse meno
ostentati.
allo spendere. Con una grande, forse mai
vista, predisposizione al lusso. Solo che è
cambiata radicalmente l’idea del lusso.
Prima esisteva unicamente il lusso da
sbattere in faccia agli altri; ora lusso vuol
dire trattarsi bene, volersi bene, spendere
molto senza preoccuparsi della visibilità o
meno dell’etichetta, crogiolarsi, aumentare
la propria qualità della vita, il proprio
livello di soddisfazione personale.
Ma, torniamo al punto iniziale di domanda:
come spiegare quello che è stato definito,
con icastica immagine, il “lusso in
7
di Mario Centorrino
poppa”, un segmento che appartiene al
made in Italy e conquista consumi di ogni
paese?
allure made in Italy che crea ulteriore valore
aggiunto.
FAST, RELIABLE AND ECONOMICAL
Ettore M., the latest
Foilmaster class of
hydrofoil to be built,
became part of the Ustica
Lines fleet in May 2003
and over the past year
has carried over 50,000
passengers.
delivered in May 2003 to the Sicilian
shipping company Ustica Lines, Ettore
M. is a Foilmaster class hydrofoil
and of the latest generation produced
by Rodriquez Cantieri Navali. The end
result of almost fifty years of experience in
the building of these vessels, the Foilmaster
class is regarded as being the foremost
example of this form of fast transport. The
Foilmaster is, in fact, one of the most efficient
forms of passenger transport thanks
to its excellent sea-keeping capacity that
allows high speeds with the engines delivering
relatively low power. It is also the
only hydrofoil in the world that complies
with all of the demanding international
safety regulations, since it is built in accordance
with the HSC 2000 rules.
“For a shipping company such as Ustica
Lines, whose core business is fast passenger
transportation,” says Ustica Lines’ General
Manager Marco DallaVecchia, “the
hydrofoil is the ideal vessel, capable of
reaching high speeds with comparatively
low power. Thus, when in 2000 we decided
to expand our fleet, this choice of vessel
and builder was a foregone conclusion:
we wanted a Rodriquez Foilmaster. What
other shipyard in the world is able to build
a vessel that can carry 250 passengers at
almost 40 knots and consume only 500
litres of fuel per hour?”
In view of these considerations, in February
2002 Ustica Lines placed the order with
Rodriquez Cantieri Navali for Ettore M.,
whose name derives from a long-standing
tradition of naming vessels after members
of the shipping company’s family. The
construction of yard number 276, which
began in May 2002 at the Messina
shipyard, was completed in twelve months,
with delivery in May 2003.
Built entirely out of aluminium, Ettore M.
is 32 meters long with a maximum width
including the foils of 14 meters, while
the hull beam is 6.7 meters. Like all the
Rodriquez vessels, the Foilmaster can be
adapted to meet the customer’s specific
requirements for payload and seating
arrangement. In the case of Ettore M.,
the payload is no less than 29 tonnes.
The 240 passengers are accommodated
on two decks, lower and upper, with 120
seats on each level and having a space
8
between the rows similar to that found on
the airlines, i.e. 850 mm.
The propulsion is provided by a pair of
MTU 16V 396 TE74L engines producing
2,000 kW each and directly coupled to
conventional fixed pitch propellers. With a
total installed power of 4,000 kW, Ettore
M. can reach a top speed, when fully
loaded, of 40 knots. Her fuel consumption,
as has already been stated, is very low due
to the fact that the ship only uses the full
power of her engines when accelerating
and when the hull is lifted out of the water.
Due to the lift generated by the foils, the
power used for the cruising speed is only
Ettore M. can carry 240 passengers at
40 knots.
Ettore M. può portare 240 passeggeri a
40 nodi.
Ettore M., ultimo nato
tra gli aliscafi
appartenente alla classe
Foilmaster,
è entrato a far parte
della flotta della Ustica
Lines in maggio 2003
e in un anno
ha trasportato più
di cinquantamila
passeggeri.
Veloce, sicuro ed economico
consegnato in maggio 2003 all’armatore
siciliano Ustica Lines, Ettore
D’altronde,
250 passeggeri a quasi 40 nodi
di velocità consumando solo 500 litri di
combustibile all’ora?”.
A seguito di queste riflessioni, in Febbraio
2002 Ustica Lines ha confermato alla
Rodriquez Cantieri Navali l’ordine per la
costruzione di un nuovo aliscafo classe
9
Foilmaster, battezzato poi Ettore M., in
ossequio ad una tradizione ormai consolidata
dell’armatore di dare alle proprie
navi il nome di familiari. La costruzione,
iniziata i primi giorni di Maggio 2002
presso il cantiere di Messina, con numero
276, è stata completata in dodici mesi con
consegna definitiva in Maggio 2003.
Ettore M. è costruito interamente in lega
leggera. È lungo 32 metri con una larghezza
massima compresa l’estensioni
l’uno accoppiati in linea d’asse a eliche
convenzionali. A fronte di una potenza
totale di 4000 kW quindi, l’Ettore M. a
pieno carico raggiunge una velocità massima
di 40 nodi. Il consumo, come detto,
è decisamente ridotto grazie al fatto che
Ettore M. utilizza la piena potenza dei
motori solo nel momento del “decollo”
dello scafo fuori dall’acqua.
autonomie superiori a 400 miglia. Il sistema
di stabilizzazione dell’aliscafo Ettore
M. si basa tutto sulle ali secanti in configurazione
tandem. Ogni ala è dotata di
flaps monitorati a mezzo di una sofisticata
RQ
R O D R I Q U E Z Fast Ferries
60 per cent of the maximum power, with a
corresponding fuel consumption of just 500
litres per hour. This also contributes to the
boat having a range of over 400 nautical
miles. The stabilizing system of Ettore M. is
based on surface piercing foils in a tandem
configuration. Each foil is fitted with flaps
monitored centrally on the bridge.
Used on the Trapani−Pelagie Islands
route, Ettore M. transported over 50,000
passengers in its first year of operation.
This is the fourth Foilmaster and the twelfth
vessel to become part of the Ustica Lines
fleet, which is one of the youngest in the
Mediterranean, with an average age of
less than ten years.
Ustica Lines S.p.A. is a shipping company
specializing in fast sea transport that has
been operating for nine years in Italian
and international routes and has now
become established in the sector.
Founded in Trapani, Italy in 1993 by Captain
Vittorio Morace, Ustica Lines started
operating in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea
on the routes linking Naples, Ustica, Favignana,
Trapani, Pantelleria, and Kelibia
(Tunisia). Over the past decade the com-
pany has continually sought to expand its
activities through a fleet expansion and,
consequently, an increase in the number
of routes served.
In 2001 Ustica Lines started operations
outside of Sicily with the hydrofoil Calarossa,
on the route between Trieste and
Pula in Croatia. In addition, in 2002 other
new international routes were started such
as the link with Venice, the major ports of
Istria, the island of Mali Lošinj (Croatia),
and regular services in the Canary Islands.
For these new routes, two additional
fast ships Vittoria M. and Gianluca M.
were acquired.
By constantly updating their fleet with
technologically advanced vessels,
Ustica Lines has become known in the
fast passenger transport sector for the
high standard of service they offer their
customers who increasingly choose to
ride with them because of their efficiency,
safety, and comfort. The contributing
factors to the company’s successes are the
quality of service, their excellent record of
punctuality, reliability and, quite obviously,
the speed of their ships.
10
Propulsion is provided by a pair of MTU
16V396 engines producing 2,000 kW
each.
La propulsione è affidata a due MTU
16V396 da 2.000 kW l’uno.
In 2003 Ustica Lines set an incredible record: 12.000 trips were made without a single one
being cancelled.
Ustica Lines S.p.A.
Vittorio Morace, Ustica Lines
inizia l’attività nel Tirreno meridionale,
coprendo le rotte di Napoli, Ustica, Favignana,
Trapani, Pantelleria e Kelibia
(Tunisia). Nel corso degli anni le operazioni
intraprese dalla Società portano a
un costante sviluppo dell’attività, al potenziamento
della flotta e, conseguentemente,
all’aumento del numero delle
linee servite.
Nel 2001 Ustica Lines inizia la propria
operatività fuori dalla Sicilia con l’aliscafo
Calarossa, impiegato nel collegamento
tra Trieste e Pola (Croazia). Nel 2002,
insieme al potenziamento del servizio fra
Trieste e la Croazia, vengono lanciati due
nuovi servizi internazionali: il collegamento
fra Venezia e i maggiori porti dell’Istria
e l’isola di Lussin Piccolo (Croazia) e i
collegamenti regolari nelle Isole Canarie.
Research Projects
Rodriquez operates in a
sector in which technological
innovations as well as
innovative products are
fundamentally important.
since building their first hydrofoil,
Rodriquez has regarded research
and innovation as a basic necessity.
Before being produced industrially, in the
early days each new type of Rodriquez
vessel had to be tested on prototypes and
continually modified so as to obtain the
best possible results. The use of innovative
technologies and newly developed
on-board equipment is necessary to have
a reasonably priced product with long-lasting
reliability, high performance and low
running costs.
With this in mind, Rodriquez has and continues
to participate in research projects
jointly with the Italian Ministry of Education
and also with the European Union.
The goal is to have an exchange of ideas
and to co-research new concepts with
various institutions, universities and other
companies in order to develop core competencies
as well as new design methods
and techniques.
Rodriquez works in one of two ways in
such project, either as the project leader
Michele Sferrazza and Carmen Roberto
Rodriquez research project managers.
responsabili dei progetti di ricerca della
Rodriquez.
or as a part of a consortium. Those where
Rodriquez has been the project leader
include:
• Nave Project: concluded in December
2001, this was to develop ship stabilization
foil systems. The application of this work on
Rodriquez’s fast ferries has seen a significant
reduction in the ship’s movements due to the
wave motion resulting in greater passenger
comfort and an increase in vessel speed due
to the reduced hull resistance from the dynamic
lift generated by the foil system.
• Monitus Project: concluded in July 2003,
this work was in cooperation with the
Technical University of Denmark (DTU),
Marin in the Netherlands and Rina (Registro
Italiano Navale) in Genoa. The goal
was to develop software able to record
and analyse the primary forces on a ship’s
structure such the sea state, ship’s motion,
and structural loads. Testing was done on
an actual vessel in regular service using a
newly developed monitoring system.
• Natav Project: concluded in June 2003,
the goal was to develop an innovative fast
ship for the transport of passengers and
vehicles. The prototype, to be built entirely
of aluminium, will be equipped with a system
of foils to reduce the vertical motion
along with variable geometry fins to reduce
the roll, and intruders for trim control.
There will also be retractable bow-thrusters
to facilitate maneuvering.
• Fully-Submerged Foil Hydrofoil Project:
currently in progress, this is to develop two
full-scale prototypes each equipped with a
fully submerged foil system for improved
performance and passenger comfort versus
the present surface piercing hydrofoils.
Also, this will allow the vessel to operate in
more adverse weather conditions as well
reduce the resistance allowing greater
speeds with the same installed power.
• Enviroaliswath Project: currently in
progress, this is to develop a revolutionary
vessel that combines the advantages of a
Swath (Small-Waterplane-Area Twin-Hull)
with those of a fully-submerged type hydrofoil
as it will be equipped with a system of
12
foils able to provide both dynamic support
and stabilization. Another characteristic
will be a reduction of the wake wash, i.e.
the generation of waves with a high energy
content caused by the movement of the
hull through the water, thus having a lower
environmental impact. The Department of
Naval Engineering (Dinav, Dipartimento di
Ingegneria Navale) of University of Genoa
is participating in this project.
The second type of project comprises those
undertaken jointly by CTMI and CALEF of
which Rodriquez is involved but not as a
project leader.
The CTMI group, in which Rodriquez,
Caronte & Tourist, Calzoni, RINa, the Engineering
Department of the University of
Messina, the Department of Transport Engineering
of University of Reggio Calabria
are participating, is presently involved in:
• SINAVE Project: this is to develop an
intermodal transport system based on
the use of fast ships, with an emphasis
on the sea transport of perishable goods.
Rodriquez’s contribution to this project will
be to design a fast ship able to meet the
requirements of the intermodal system.
The CALEF group, in which Rodriquez,
Enea, Centro Ricerche Fiat, El. En., Zanon,
Istituto R.T.M., 3T, and Mer. Mec. are participating,
is involved in the following:
• Pales Project: Concluded in December
2001, this saw the development of new
methods for designing light modular structures,
welded together with an innovative
laser and electron beam technique, thereby
allowing the use of lighter materials for
shipbuilding.
Through its subsidiary Rodriquez Engineering,
Rodriquez participates in the CETMA
group. At present Rodriquez is involved
with CETMA in the following projects:
• Teplan Project: This is to find new and
innovative techniques for on board waste
disposal by means of a thermal / plasma
method.
• Mavet Project: This is to develop multifunction
passenger transport modules as
part of a new flexible architecture system
Progetti di ricerca
La Rodriquez opera in un settore
in cui l’innovazione, tecnologica
e di prodotto, ricopre
un’importanza fondamentale.
Fin dalla realizzazione del primo aliscafo,
la Rodriquez ha fatto di ricerca
e innovazione una necessità. Ogni
nuova tipologia di nave Rodriquez infatti,
prima di essere realizzata industrialmente,
ha bisogno di essere studiata, provata e
sperimentata su prototipi e continuamente
modificata per ottenere il miglior risultato
possibile.
know-how, nuovi strumenti e metodologie
di progettazione e di calcolo, si possono
distinguere i progetti sviluppati direttamente
Rodriquez stessa fa parte.
Nella prima tipologia rientrano i seguenti
progetti:
- progetto “Nave”, concluso nel dicembre
del 2001, relativo a prototipi di sistemi
13
The TMV 115 Garcia Lorca engine control
room is in the wheelhouse.
nave. L’applicazione di questi sistemi sui
fast ferry Rodriquez consente di ridurre
i movimenti della nave dovuti al moto
ondoso, con conseguente aumento del
comfort dei passeggeri e aumento della
velocità, grazie alla riduzione della resistenza
dello scafo ottenuta dalla spinta
idrodinamica del sistema alare.
- progetto “Monitus”, concluso nel luglio
del 2003, sviluppato in cooperazione
con la Università Navale Danese (Dtu), la
Vasca Navale di Marin (Olanda), il Rina
(Genova), relativo allo sviluppo di software
per il calcolo dei principali parametri
idrodinamici della nave (stato del mare,
moti della nave, carichi sulle strutture) testato
mediante misurazioni a bordo di una
nave esistente attraverso l’installazione di
un sistema di monitoraggio appositamente
progettato.
operatività in condizioni meteo
avverse, minore resistenza all’avanzamento
e quindi maggiore velocità a parità
di potenza installata.
- progetto “Enviroaliswath”, attualmente
stabilizzazione. Altra caratteristica del
prototipo sarà la riduzione del fenomeno
del wake-wash (ovvero della generazione
di onde ad alto contenuto energetico provocate
dall’avanzamento dello scafo nell’acqua),
nave.
Grazie proprio a questi notevoli sforzi
nelle attività di Ricerca e Sviluppo e all’investimento

A matter of style
After more than twenty
years of experience, some
of it in the aviation field,
Airnaval is fitting out not
only the fast ferries built
by Rodriquez Cantieri
Navali but also the yachts
built by Conam and
Rodriquez Yachts, as well
as some cruise ships.
founded over twenty years ago through
the entrepreneurial spirit of the Sangiovanni
brothers, Airnaval sums up their
mission in their name. They are active in
the shipbuilding and other industrial sectors
but they also have experience in the
aviation field. By applying the latest technologies
to each of these sectors and have
a core group of specialized personnel, they
are able to provide on-the-spot solutions to
customer’s needs.
Located in Nola, in the province of Naples,
the Airnaval factory occupies a site
of 6,000 square meters, of which 3,000
square meters is covered.
In 1989 the firm started working in the
shipbuilding sector, specializing in fitting
out fast ships, ferries, hydrofoils, catama-
rans, and yachts. Its customers have included
such shipping companies as Lauro,
SNAV, Caremar, NCS, and Navigazione
Libera del Golfo. Their light, medium,
and heavy steel and aluminum structure
assembly shops are able to meet all the
out fitting needs not only of large ships but
also of medium-size and large yachts. With
their carpentry shop, they are capable of
undertaking all types of woodworking
projects, including detailed forms and finishing
details with their skilled workforce
of fifty carpenters.
Airnaval uses innovative materials to satisfy
the increasingly sophisticated outfitting
requirements including more demanding
regulations for both commercial ships
and pleasure boats. In addition to their
production capabilities, Airnaval provides
full support at the design stage through
their style center and technical department
where two naval architects are able to provide
owners the solutions to any number of
situations that may arise.
Very strict ship’s safety regulations impose
a number of limits on the use of materials
which may otherwise be acceptable
on a yacht. In either situation, precise
tolerances are ensured through the use
of a highly sophisticated water-jet cutting
machine capable of cutting through steel
16
plates up to 150 millimeters thick and with
a high degree of precision. For wood working,
a three-dimensional lathe allows even
the most complicated of operations to be
undertaken whilst the beading machines
and upholsterers allow the fabric and
soft material operations to be carried out
in-house.
The production times are usually short,
“We were able to complete the interior
of an 84-meter Aquastrada, the TMV 84
Ramon Llull (see Rodriquez Quarterly, no.
1, October 2003) in only four months,”
Airnaval’s Managing Director, Carmine
Sangiovanni, says with great pride, “and
are able to fit out a yacht in less than three
months. For the Conam 75 WideBody, for
instance, we managed to complete the
provisional outfitting in less than thirty
working days for the Genoa Boat Show. A
record!” This flexibility, together with the
skill and great precision as exemplified in
the finished product, and the assembly on
board the yacht, are some of Airnaval’s
strong points.
airnaval è nata oltre venti anni fa
dall’energia imprenditoriale dei
fratelli Sangiovanni e sintetizza
nel suo nome la sua mission. Svolge infatti
la sua attività nei settori della cantieristica
navale e industriale, ma ha lavorato anche
in campo aeronautico, applicando
tecnologie adeguate a ogni settore, avvalendosi
navi veloci, traghetti, aliscafi, catamarani
e yacht. Ha servito armatori come Lauro,
Snav, Caremar, NCS, Navigazione Libera
del Golfo. I suoi reparti di carpenteria
leggera, media e pesante, in ferro e alluminio,
grandi dimensioni. Con il reparto di falegnameria
è capace di effettuare qualsiasi
lavorazione in legno, stilizzando e rifinendo
particolari d’arredamento di interni e
di esterni di qualsiasi specie e stile, grazie
alle elevate capacità dei 50 addetti, operai
specializzati, carpentieri e falegnami.
Airnaval impiega materiali d’avanguardia
per rispondere alle sempre più sofisticate
esigenze stilistico-arredative e alle sempre
più severe normative sia navali che del
diporto.
Oltre all’attività di produzione, Airnaval
esigenti impongono alcuni limiti all’impiego
dei materiali che viceversa possono
essere impiegati sugli yacht, dove la limitatezza
degli spazi impone misurazioni e
lavorazioni micrometriche.
millimetri. Per il legno un pantografo in
3D consente tutte le lavorazioni più ardite,
mentre bordatrici e tappezzeria interne
permettono l’esecuzione in casa di lavori
su stoffe e materiali morbidi.
I tempi di lavorazione sono particolarmente
rapidi. “Siamo riusciti a completare
gli interni di un Aquastrada di 84 metri,
come il TMV 84 Ramon Llull (vedi Rodriquez
Quarterly N° 1, ottobre 2003) in soli
particolare, siamo riusciti a completare in
30 giorni lavorativi l’allestimento provvisorio
PRIDE OF THE SOUTH
Known for his ingenious,
innovative, and imaginative
approach, Giuseppe Cimino
recounts how Conam started
producing boats, with their
unique combination of
comfort and onboard space.
i was
working at Fincantieri, recalls
Giuseppe Cimino, a Neapolitan naval
architect, the founder and now Managing
Director of Conam, “and while I
was involved in the building of Tirrenia’s
ships named after the Roman roads − the
Aurelia, the Flaminia, and so on − I was
thinking how I’d much rather be out at sea
in a pleasure boat.”
After getting an honors degree in naval architecture
from Naples University, Cimino
quite naturally began his professional
career at Fincantieri. “But this was nothing
more than the first step,” says Cimino. “I
graduated with a degree in naval architecture
because I wanted to build pleasure
boats.” And his ambition, like all well inspired
plans, rapidly became true.
In 1980, Costruzioni Navali Meridionali,
alias Conam, was founded and kicked-off
with the “Solaria”, an 8-meter boat that
already bore the seeds for many ideas that
would become distinctive features of the
boats Cimino would design.
Immediately following Solaria came the series
of true “pleasure boats”. The America
which was the subject of an article in issue
number 2 of the Rodriquez Quarterly was
the first Italian walkaround, a boat with
ample seating, plenty of room for sunning
oneself, as well as an elegant double
cabin, all in just 9 meters. Then came the
Lupo di Mare which offered a variety of
18
practical and economical solutions to the
typical problems of space and safety. “My
experience in the field of commercial shipping,”
explains Cimino, “led me to pay
special attention to safety and sea-worthiness
as well as to seek intelligent solutions
that would simplify life on board and allow
the users to feel extremely secure.” These
principles were evident as early as 1984
on the Lupo di Mare which had a retractable
swim ladder always ready for use,
self-inflating life rafts on slides with ball
bearings and ready to be launched from
a dedicated stowage area with a hatch
along with an emergency 12-volt electrical
circuit independent of the primary system
that could power the VHF radio, navigation
lights, and bilge-pump.
But the most interesting innovation from
Giuseppe Cimino’s creative mind was
undoubtedly the wide-body concept for

tipologie, uniche per comfort
e spazio a bordo.
lavoravo alla Fincantieri – ricorda Giuseppe
Cimino, ingegnere navale napoletano,
diporto”.
Si laurea con onore in Ingegneria Navale
a Napoli ed entra, quasi naturalmente in
Fincantieri. “Un passaggio – continua Cimino
– una semplice tappa. Mi ero iscritto
a Ingegneria Navale con il preciso intento
di costruire barche da diporto”. E questo
proposito, forte come tutti i progetti sostenuti
Cimino.
pronta all’uso, gli autogonfiabili su slitte
con cuscinetti a sfera, in apposito vano
con sportello, sempre pronti al lancio e
un impianto d’emergenza a 12 volt, indipendente
da quello principale, che alimentava
il Vhf, le luci di via e la pompa di
19
sentina. Ma l’innovazione più dirompente
della creatività di Giuseppe Cimino è
senza dubbio nei motoryacht da crociera
wide body. “L’idea mi si conficcò nella testa,
come un tarlo – rievoca l’ingegnere
– andando avanti e indietro con Ischia a
bordo dei catamarani. ‘Potessimo disporre
di spazi così’ mi dicevo fra me e me.
Giovanni Morace e fu l’occasione
per imbastire un rapporto che un poco
cruising motoryachts. “I got the idea in my
head,” recalls the engineer, “when I was
going back and forth to Ischia on the catamarans.
‘If only we could have space like
there is here,’ I thought to myself. And little
by little I developed the concept of the wide
body, even on relatively small boats.” Thus
in 1991 the 15 meter long Chorum 48 was
launched with a full-beam saloon, compatible
to one found on a 25-meter boat. The
typical fore-aft passageways were moved
to the upper deck and were accessed from
the aft cockpit by two staircases, and led
to the foredeck where the sunning and
anchor handling areas were located. The
profile was kept low, leaving the vessel
with the same height as a traditional flybridge
boat, but with the advantage of a
very spacious interior for a boat of its size.
Among the numerous innovations found
on the Chorum 48 was the retractable passarelle,
now a standard on all boats. This
particularly impressed Giovanni Morace,
the Managing Director of Rodriquez, and
marked the start of a relationship that led
over time to the acquisition of Conam by
Rodriquez Cantieri Navali.
From this early design, which evolved to 54
and then 60 feet and had a production run
of 42 boats to date, the Conam 75 Wide-
Body was developed. “We had already
drawn up a project for a 72-foot boat,”
recalls Cimino, “that contained essentially
the same concepts that we can see today
on the 75-footer. The group’s strength and
synergy allowed us to realize the boat with
a final touch provided by Francesco Paszkowski.”
The incorporation of Conam with Rodriquez
Cantieri Navali has given a major
boost to the Neapolitan yard’s production
capacity. “It’s been a bit like marrying off
a daughter,” explains Cimino, “who is exposed
to new experiences and has to make
the most of her new opportunities. With the
handcraftsmanship-based structure that
we previously had, we had reached our
limits. In the first decade of the yard’s existence
we developed our ideas and in the
second decade we established our yard’s
reputation both at home and abroad. Now
in the third decade, we’re ready to combine
ideas, projects, and technologies by
taking full advantage of the group’s crea-
tivity, engineering skills, and technical and
construction capabilities. This has allowed
us to expand in ways previously unimaginable
but without, however, losing the special
touch of the craftsman that makes one
of our yachts a unique product.”
What’s on Giuseppe Cimino’s drawing
board (or rather, computer screen) today?
“The next project,” predicts the engineer,
“is an open 80-footer, a model that is very
much in demand today and which is derived
from the 75-footer including the full
beam concept. It’s a very original design,
with a sliding glass roof that makes it a
real open boat at any time. Then there’s
a 50- to 55-foot WideBody which is an
important size as it is on the threshold
between the small and large yachts. Then
there are plans, yet to be finalized, for an
extension of the Naples yard that will allow
us to produce twenty boats of up to twenty
meters a year there in addition to the five
or six boats over twenty meters being produced
at Sarzana.”
Why are there so many names of Greek
origin? “I attended a high school specialized
in classical studies,” reveals Cimino,
“and I liked the idea of taking names from
the classic world and combining them with
a modern product.”
Cimino?
Poi ancora
un WideBody di 50/55 piedi, evoluzione
del 48, una misura interessante considerata
oggi una taglia d’ingresso alla grande
Perché tanti nomi di origine greca? “Ho
frequentato il liceo classico – confessa Cimino
– e mi piaceva rievocare quei suoni,
e associare a un prodotto di concezione
moderna un’evocazione classica”.
R O D R I Q U E Z The way we were
THE FAMILY’S FOUNDER
In the 1980’s with the
Lerici Class minehunter,
a new era began in mine
countermeasures.
At that time, Intermarine
had developed
sophisticated technology
that is still at the cutting
edge today.
in the mid-1970’s the Italian Navy decided
it was time to renew their fleet of
mine countermeasure vessels. Mines, as
both defensive and offensive weapons,
were rapidly being developed in terms of
both quantity and quality. Meanwhile, Italy,
due to obvious geographical reasons,
was committed to maintaining stability in
the Mediterranean and felt it needed to
tackle this task with an efficient, modern
Navy.
For the development of a new fleet of
mine countermeasure vessels, the Italian
Navy decided to abandon the traditional
minesweeper concept in favor of the
minehunter which actively seeks out and
neutralizes mines.
The minehunter’s hull had to allow the
vessel to safely approach mines without
activating their sensitive triggering circuits
and, should an explosion occur, they had
to be able to withstand the resulting pressure
and shock-waves, minimizing damage
to both the crew and on-board equipment.
The new minehunter would have to have
a very low noise level (low acoustic signature),
a low magnetic material content
(low magnetic signature) and have a very
high resistance to the shockwave from an
underwater explosion.
Intermarine, which until then had built
small pleasure boats in fiberglass, decided
to address head on the stringent requirements
of the Italian Navy. First and foremost,
the yard identified fiberglass as the
ideal construction material as this is naturally
non-magnetic as well as being a poor
conductor of noise and vibration while at
the same time being very elastic. After a
long period of research, Intermarine developed
an innovative construction technique
for the hull, a single structure without the
traditional stiffeners but with a very thick
outer skin. This construction technique was
co-developed with new types of composite
materials (resins and fibers) that allowed
the development of larger hulls than were
possible with previous fiberglass lamination
techniques.
The structural analysis and tests carried
out on the hull demonstrated that the hull
developed by Intermarine, when subjected
to shockwaves from underwater explosions,
was sufficiently flexible without suffering
permanent deformation or complete
failure.
In order to shorten the production time, Intermarine
designed and constructed a semiautomatic
impregnation machine capable
of determining the ideal quantity of resin
22
needed when impregnating the fiberglass
to obtain the optimum mechanical properties
of the finished product. The structure
created in such a way conformed precisely
to the NATO standards for shock-resistance
and low magnetic signature. In addition,
because of the absence of any structural
stiffeners, the hull was easy to repair.
Following this development work, the Italian
Navy decided to commission a new
fleet of minehunters from Intermarine: the
first of class Lerici underwent a long series
of tests that confirmed it fully met all of the
navy’s requirements.
With a length of 49,98 meters, a displacement
of 570 tonnes, a speed of about 14
knots and a crew of 48, the Lerici, was
handed over to the Italian Navy in La
Spezia on 4 May 1985 in the presence of
the then Minister of Defense Senator Giovanni
Spadolini and other important State
representatives. In his speech, the Minister
praised the yard for their proven capabilities
in research and development of high
tech new products as well as the efficiency
and high quality of the ship which would
become the pride and joy of the new fleet
of mine countermeasure vessels for the
Italian Navy.
After the Lerici, Intermarine built three more
minehunters of the same class which were
called Sapri, Milazzo, and Vieste. The very
positive experience of the Lerici class persuaded
the Italian Navy to order another
eight minehunters from Intermarine. This
next series was the Gaeta class which itself
was a natural evolution of the Lerici class.
For the first “Lerici Class” the bridge on Magra River was opened.
contromisure mine.
Intermarine mise a punto
una sofisticata tecnologia
attuale ancora oggi.
a metà
degli anni ’70 la Marina Militare
Italiana avvertì l’esigenza di
rinnovare la sua flotta di navi di
contromisure mine. Infatti le mine, usate
sia in funzione difensiva che offensiva,
stavano conoscendo uno sviluppo notevole,
sia in termini qualitativi che quantitativi,
e l’Italia, impegnata per evidenti motivi
geografici a garantire condizioni di stabilità
nell’ambito del Mar Mediterraneo, non
poteva esimersi dall’affrontare tale compito
con una flotta rinnovata, moderna ed
efficiente.
dall’esplosione stessa, minimizzando i
danni sia al personale imbarcato che agli
equipaggiamenti installati. Il nuovo cacciamine,
quindi, avrebbe dovuto essere
caratterizzato da elevatissima silenziosità
(bassa segnatura acustica), ridottissimo
contenuto di materiali magnetici (bassa
segnatura magnetica) ed elevatissima capacità
di resistere allo shock derivante da
esplosione subacquea.
Intermarine, che fino ad allora aveva
costruito piccole imbarcazioni da diporto
in vetroresina, decise di cimentarsi nella
difficile impresa di soddisfare le richieste
della MMI. Innanzitutto il cantiere identificò
nella vetroresina il materiale di costruzione
ideale, essendo questa naturalmente
amagnetica, cattiva conduttrice di
rumore e vibrazioni ed allo stesso tempo
molto elastica. Dopo lunghe ricerche e
studi Intermarine sviluppò un’innovativa
tecnica costruttiva dello scafo, realizzato
in un unico pezzo, senza rinforzi strutturali
e con pelle a elevato spessore: tale
tecnica costruttiva fu accompagnata dal
contemporaneo sviluppo di una nuova
famiglia di materiali compositi (resine
e fibre) che consentivano di realizzare
grandi manufatti superando le limitazioni
allora insite nell’utilizzo della vetroresina.
Le analisi strutturali ed i test pratici
condotti su porzioni di struttura dimostrarono
che lo scafo sviluppato da Intermarine,
sottoposto a shock da esplosione
subacquea, reagiva in maniera flessibile,
senza subire deformazioni permanenti né
rotture.
conforme agli standard Nato
in termini di resistenza allo shock e di
minimo magnetismo, e grazie all’assenza
dei rinforzi strutturali era facilmente
riparabile.
a tutti i requisiti richiesti e sottoscritti.
l’alta qualità della nave fiore all’occhiello
Intermarine altri otto cacciamine. Nacque
