Cypress Promotion Sets

Cypress Promotion Sets Sights On High-Profile Projects What did Noah’s Ark and the original doors of St. Peter’s Basilica have in common? Both were made of the durable wood we know as Cypress. The Southern Cypress Manufacturers Association (SCMA) is dedicated to the promotion of sustainable Cypress building products to trade professionals and consumers. This versatile wood, known to withstand the test of time, has been an established favorite for outdoor applications and is being recognized as well-suited for a variety of indoor applications, as well. SCMA’s website, www.cypressinfo.org, is a comprehensive onestop resource for Cypress-related facts, case studies, videos and much more. If it’s been a while since your last visit, we invite you to take a look at the wealth of information available at your fingertips. For architects researching Cypress design values and strength and mechanical properties, www.cypressinfo.org is the place to be. Consumers needing to know “where to buy,” or looking for Cypress decking and siding installation guides, the website provides that, too. Case studies of innovative Cypress projects, SCMA member locations, a photo gallery showcase of finished Cypress projects in interior and exterior applications, even a quarterly e-newsletter make up the informative site. And if visitors can’t find what they are looking for, there’s also a frequently asked questions page and a write and request service. In 2011, we plan to continue updating the site’s downloadable literature, plus add several projects to its case study library. And that’s just the tip of our 2011 Cypress promotion plan. This month, Cypress will be making an appearance on television screens across America in a 13-episode series covering the Kuppersmith Project on Today’s Homeowner with Danny Lipford, a nationally syndicated home improvement show. Look for Cypress shakes on the renovated home’s exterior, Cypress as part of the fence system, and Cypress as an indoor/outdoor porch ceiling. SCMA’s president-elect, Frank Vallot of Acadian Cypress & Hardwoods, Ponchatoula, La., will even appear on one of the episodes to discuss the benefits of building with Cypress. Later in the year, Cypress will be a featured building material at the 2011 Solar Decathlon, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, September 23 through October 2, on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. SCMA is working with several collegiate teams— including Team Florida, Team New York, and the University of Tennessee—to include Cypress in their innovative, sustainable, solar homes. Yes, 2011 is going to be an exciting and busy year of spreading our Cypress message: not only is Cypress a beautiful material, its functionality, versatility, natural durability, and sustainability set it apart from other building products and materials. For more information on the SCMA, and to learn more about this unique and versatile American wood, we invite you to visit www.cypressinfo.org. • 14 Hardwoods Have Versatility
