Overlapping leaves and stylized trees are among the finalists to be selected as an umbrella American Hardwood logo according to UHP Chairman and Team member Terry Brennan (Baillie Lumber) and Todd Vogelsinger (Columbia Forest Products) who presented the concepts at the Hardwood Leaders Forum on December 7. The logo concepts and accompanying slogans “Bring in the Beauty”; “The Attraction is Only Natural” among others - are undergoing a final round of review within the UHP team before being tested by a sampling of consumers and “prosumers” (designers, builders, architects, etc.). As noted by the UHP leaders, the group’s sole purpose was to “develop a unified American Hardwood brand and message” that is scalable and can be used by all Hardwood associations, organizations, companies and groups at no cost. The UHP process has drawn on extensive experience of professional marketing, advertising, and research resources. The process has required an investment of time and money to assure that results are based on an unbiased view of the buying public – both present and future – of a diverse age, gender, and cultural mix. As the brand concepts came up for review the UHP volunteer leaders had to remind themselves that the target market lies outside the industry and remained focused on “keeping their consumer hats on” as they weighed the options. One UHP leader, Jack Shannon (Shannon Group) who has helped guide the direction of the UHP, building on his understanding of the Cotton, Inc. program and logo observed, “The cotton logo which enjoys instant recognition around the world was a revolutionary – even controversial - concept when it was first conceived. Who would have ever thought a cotton boll would have traction outside of the Deep South? No one in the world needs to have a tree, leaf or wood explained to them. It’s a great place to start.” The logo candidates and catch phrases go to a final round of testing with unveiling targeted for this month. Once approved, the logo and slogan will be copyrighted and made available for public usage. Hardwood trade associations – many of which have funded the UHP project - will guide the launch and dissemination of this exciting new identity for American Hardwoods.
