Appalachian Lumbermen

Appalachian Lumbermen LEARN ABOUT HARDWOOD FLOORING GAINS Mountain City, TN—The Appalachian Lumbermen’s Club (ALC) held a recent meeting here and members heard good news from the Hardwood flooring sector. By Tom Inman Neil Poland, president of Mullican Flooring in Johnson City, TN, gave an upbeat report on the Hardwood flooring industry in 2013. Sales of solid and engineered Hardwood flooring are up from one year ago as new home construction and renovations increase. Many flooring manufacturers have increased prices multiple times in the past 12 months as supplies tighten and Hardwood lumber prices rise. He said the increases have not had a dramatic impact on sales yet. Originally known for unfinished solid flooring cultivated from Appalachian forests, Mullican Flooring has since grown into an international competitor with a broad range of prefinished, engineered and exotic products cultivated from around the globe. The company has more than 1,500 products, available through 50 distributors and 5,000 retailers across the United States. Mullican Flooring operates four facilities, where the company’s solid Hardwood flooring is manufactured. These sites are located in Virginia, West Virginia, New York and the company’s headquarters in Johnson City, TN. Each of these locations utilize state-of-the-art machinery, which reduces both labor costs and time, while enhancing the overall product. The Appalachian Lumbermen’s Club officers for the year are: Cliff McKittrick of McKittrick Lumber Co., president; Jamie Straka of Vernon James Inc., past president; Brian Ballard of Atlanta Hardwood Corp., vice president; Kim Vollinger of W.M. Cramer Lumber Co., secretary/treasurer; and board members Mark Pierce of New River Hardwoods Inc.; Ken Stephens of Associated Hardwoods Inc.; Kyle Cronland of Cronland Lumber Co. Inc.; and Steve Leonard of Lawrence Lumber Co. The next meeting of the ALC will be November 12 in Asheville, NC.
