Diaz Manufacturing purchases over 800,000 board feet per year of Cherry, Red Oak, Hard and Soft Maple, Yellow and Red Birch, and Black Walnut and Sapele. Grades handled include FAS, F1F, No. 1 and No. 2 Common, as well as Select and Better. The company manufactures cabinet doors, drawer fronts and boxes, and moulding, millwork and trim. Zub has been with Diaz Manufacturing for two years in her present position, and 14 years under previous owners Donald Dean & Sons. In addition to purchasing, other responsibilities include inventory control, website design/maintenance and marketing. Previous responsibilities Zub has overseen range from working as a machine operator and panel color matcher to team leader and inventory control officer. Her first job in the industry was as a chop saw operator in 1997. Zub enjoys exploring the countryside in her Jeep, and attending her son’s track and cross country events. MIKE BURKET is wood development manager for Springs Window Fashions LLC in Grayling, MI. Springs Window Fashions is a manufacturer of Venetian blinds and shutters (sold under the brand names of Bali, Graber and Nanik). The company is the only U.S. wood blind manufacturer that is vertically integrated and uses only North American Basswood to manufacture its parts. Springs Window Fashions purchases 10 million board feet of Basswood annually in 9/4 No. 2A and Better, green, rough; 5/4 No. Mike Burket 1 Common and Better, green, rough, and 4/4 No. 1 Common and Better, green, rough. The company is a member of the Lake States Lumber Association and Great Lakes Kiln Drying Association. Burket graduated from Michigan Technological University in Houghton, MI, with a degree in forest management. Burket has worked in the forest products industry since 1975, with his first job as a forester/log grader. Burket also has worked as sawmill manager, lumber sales manager and general manager for a concentration yard. He has held his present position for the entire seven years he has been with Springs Window Fashions. As wood development manager, Burket is responsible for purchasing lumber and sheet goods, receiving and inspecting lumber and kiln drying. He also purchases blind and shutter components from other manufacturers. He and his wife of 37 years, Donna, have a son. In his free time, Burket enjoys golf and tending to his small orchard of apples and cherries, and visiting his son in Florida. A BRIEF SKETCH OF THE LEADING PURCHASING EXECUTIVES IN THE HARDWOOD INDUSTRY PAUL FARROW is lumber purchaser for Armstrong Wood Products, located in West Plains, MO. Armstrong Wood Products manufactures Hardwood flooring using Red and White Oak, as well as Hickory. Total yearly board footage purchased is over 50 million, all grades, 4/4, green, AD and KD, and rough. Farrow started young in the industry, working at his uncle’s sawmill. He has been with the company for nearly 22 years, and has purchased over 900 million board feet of lumber during his career as lumber buyer. In this position Farrow is responsible for purchasing all lumber at the West Plains facility, while he also provides business analysis for the solid wood division as needed. Past positions he has held in the industry have been as a sales representative, lumber inspector and general laborer at Lewis & Clark Sawmill, West Alton, MO. Armstrong Wood Products is a member of the West Side Hardwood Club. Farrow is a graduate of the following schools: Missouri State University, Springfield, MO, Paul Farrow where he obtained a master’s degree in accounting; University of Missouri-Columbia, Columbia, MO, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration; and the National Hardwood Lumber Association Inspection School, Memphis, TN. Farrow has been married to Ruth for 20 years. For more information visit www.armstrong.com. MICHAEL MCFARLAND is president/owner of McFarland Door Mfg. Co. Inc., a manufacturer in Lakeview, OR. McFarland Door purchases approximately 300,000 board feet annually of Alder, Ash, Beech, Birch, Cedar, Cherry, Rustic Cherry, Hemlock, Hickory, Hard and Soft Maple, Red and White Oak, Walnut, Willow, Iroko, Makore, Teak, Sapele, rustic, rift and quarter-sawn, as well as radiata and eastern white pine. The company also orders and uses a significant amount of MDF and MDF core plywood. McFarland Door purchases approximately 2,000 board feet of certified lumber annually and is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified. The company manufactures doors, jambs, finishing, hardware, casing, mouldings, transoms, entryways, and fire-rated, sound-rated and marine-rated doors. The company takes pride in its customer service, in-house AHC, design experts, technical experts and more than 100 years combined experience in the field. McFarland’s first job in the forest products industry was in carpentry work remodeling a chain of supermarkets in the early 1970s. In 1975, he started Michael’s Custom Cabinets. In 1978, this became a fulltime occupation as the company grew. In 1979, McFarland incorporated as McFarland Cabinet Company. In 1991, he changed the name to McFarland Door Mfg. Co. Inc. In 1989, McFarland Cabinet was named a top cabinet company in the Los Angeles Times Magazine. Its products have been featured in Architectural Digest and Sunset Magazine.
