A graduate of West High School in Torrance, CA, McFarland also studied at Ricks College in Rexburg, ID. He completed a cabinetry apprenticeship at Long Beach State University. For over 20 years, CHRIS TIETZ has been living the dream as the owner of The Shutter Mill in Stillwater, OK. Tietz began selling Kirtz © shutters from a garage in 1987. As president and chief executive officer, Tietz handles lumber purchasing and basic day-to-day operations. Today, The Shutter Mill markets Kirtz shutters and interior plantation shutters in various architectural shapes and unique wood species. The company specializes in Soft Maple, Red Oak, Cherry and Mahogany, but has made shutters from 50 different species. The facility purchases approximately 250,000 board feet of lumber per year. The Shutter Mill, which began as a two-man operation, now employs 35 workers in a 35,000-square-foot warehouse. Before starting the company, Tietz worked as a subcontractor for cabinet builders and trim carpenters. He boasts celebrities as clients from Wynona and Ashley Judd, Wayne Gretzky to Larry Bird. Tietz has been married for 35 years to wife, Denise, and has two children. In his spare time, he enjoys college athletics and cheers on the Oklahoma State University Cowboys. Custom Woodcrafter manufactures architectural millwork and furniture with domestic lumber, purchasing 100,000 board feet in total of mixed Hardwoods (Select, 4/4 through 16/4, KD) including wide and thick Walnut. The firm specializes in high-end millwork for homes, custom furniture and also offers woodworking classes. In addition, Custom Woodcrafter offers wide plank Mahogany lumber in thick cuts. Timm began his career in the forest products industry at age 15, serving as a laborer and carpenter. He has also sawn lumber at his family’s sawmill. Timm is a graduate of Lindberg High School in Hopkins, MN, and attended Bethel College in St. Paul, MN. He was a member of the U.S. Navy for 7 1/2 years on submarines. Timm and his wife of 33 years, Sarah, have four grown children. He enjoys spending time with his family, going to church, and biking and canoeing. Timm also owns a cabin on a lake in the mountains of North Carolina, which he likes to rent out to vacationers.
