Introduction

Introduction 31. Venezuela Trad. arr. Alberto Grau, Niño lindo (Lovely baby) Alberto Grau (b. 1937) was born in Spain but settled in Venezuela as a boy. As a composer, conductor, and teacher, he has earned a place among the finest Venezuelan musicians of his day. In 1967 he founded the Schola Cantorum de Caracas. He has served as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and professor of choral music in both North and South America and throughout Western Europe, and he directs choral activities in Venezuela and the Andean region. The traditional song Niño lindo is a Venezuelan Christmas carol which praises the beauty of the newborn Christ child. It originated in the haciendas in the nineteenth century and uses the rhythm of the merengue, a dance in 2/4 metre characterized by alternating triplets and quavers. The carol would traditionally be accompanied by the cuatro, a small four-stringed guitar, but it appears here in a simple arrangement for four-part choir. for online perusal only xvi
