Intelligent Motor Control Systems (IMCS)OVERVIEWPowell Electrical Group’s extensive range of productsand services includes the in-house design andmanufacture of IEC switchgear, motor control centersand Intelligent Motor Control Systems from its Europeanfactory in Bradford, U.K.From this experience, Powell Electrical Group has uniqueinsight into the needs of its largest markets which, inturn, ensures the company is at the forefront of IMCStechnology.A typical IMCS in a large process environment will havea system architecture as shown above, with the hostprocess control system – typically a DCS – at the highestlevel and Motor Manager 6 at the device level within theLV/MV switchgear.CMACAn IMCS has the following characteristics:Switchgear/Motor Control Centersincorporating Microprocessor-baseddevicesProtection, Control and Monitoring ofMotor and Distribution circuits, utilizingserial communicationsInterface to Host Systems via serialcommunicationsThe key element located between these levels andproviding a number of crucial serial interfaces is CMAC(Communications Management and Control Computer).CMAC is a dedicated communications processor, capableof simultaneously handling communications from anumber of master and slave devices, irrespective of thecommunication protocol.Another interface provided by CMAC is that via LAN(Local Area Network) to the IMS Electrical SCADA system.IMS provides a full, distributed SCADA capability, withsophisticated graphics, that can display a complete electricalsystem by the use of dynamic single line diagramsand user-friendly monitoring, control and configurationscreens at device level.EWS (Engineering Workstation) is again connected byLAN or serial link to CMAC, or direct to Motor Manager 6,and provides the means to centrally, or locally, configureboth the CMAC and its connected devices.Powered by Safety ®
