Jonas Kruopas, Rinktiniai raßtai,
pareng∂ Stasys Keinys, Kazys Mork∆nas, Algirdas Sabaliauskas
Vilnius: Mokslo ir enciklopedij¨ leidybos institutas,
1998, pp. 1-555. ISBN 5–420–01440–8
It is certainly fitting that many of the more important works of Jonas Kruopas
be made available to the scholarly world in a single volume. The compilers have
divided Kruopas’ works into four broad thematic categories: (I) works copied
from scientific publications (28 items), (II) articles from periodicals about dictionaries
and reviews of various publications which are important from the linguistic
point of view (26 items), (III) articles about matters of language culture and
terminology (24 items), (IV) a few articles on language history and linguists published
in various periodicals (6 items). The bibliography (pp. 549-555) is divided
into three sections, the first including brochures, articles and reviews and does
include some items not reprinted here in the Selected Works. The second part of the
bibliography includes edited publications, the Dictionary of the Lithuanian Language
(LKÛ), terminological and other dictionaries, and the third part contains literature
about Kruopas. Some items not pertaining to language or too ideological in content
and articles for encyclopedias are not included. Still “J. V. Stalinas apie kalbos
Ωodynin´ sud∂t^ ir pagrindin^ fondå” (p. 549) made it into the bibliography, but
was not chosen for reprinting in this volume. One can easily imagine why.
Those articles reprinted here which originally appeared in periodicals with a
large format, e.g., Lietuvi¨ kalbotyros klausimai (LKK), Literat∆ra ir kalba (LiK), the
Academy of Sciences Darbai (LMAD), etc. were merely reproduced by some kind
of photographic process. For these the original pagination is retained at the bottom
of the page, whereas a new pagination for these Selected Works is to be found
at the top of each page. Articles originally appearing in journals with a smaller
format, e.g., Kalbos kult∆ra, M∆s¨ kalba were reset again.
Following the Foreword (pp. 9-10) there is a brief biography of Jonas Kruopas
written by Algirdas Sabaliauskas. Everyone knows from Sabaliauskas’ previous
