XIII a. viduryje, karaliui Mindaugui priėmus krikštą, pagoniškoje
kulto vietoje – Šventaragio slėnyje (dabartinė Katedros aikštė)
pirmą kartą pastatyta katedra. Nuo to laiko daug kartų nykusi
ir perstatyta, šiandien katedra yra XVIII a. pabaigos klacisistinio
stiliaus architekto L. Stuokos-Gucevičiaus kūrinys. Katedros požemiuose
galima aptikti ir išlikusių originalių pirmųjų XIII–XV a.
šventyklų fragmentų.
Katedros aikštė yra pagrindinė Vilniaus aikštė, kurioje kiekvienų
metų gruodžio mėnesį įžiebiama pagrindinė miesto eglė.
Šalia arkikatedros stūkso 57 m aukščio Katedros varpinės bokštas,
kurio apatinė dalis yra originali buvusio Žemutinės pilies gynybinio
bokšto liekana.
The first cathedral was built on a pagan site of worship in the
Šventaragis Valley (now Cathedral Square) in the mid-13th
century, after King Mindaugas accepted baptism. Destroyed
and rebuilt since then many times, the present cathedral is in
the Classical style of the late 18th century, and was built by the
architect Laurynas Stuoka-Gucevičius. In the crypt, it is possible
to see some surviving parts of the original 13th to 15th-century
buildings.
Cathedral Square is the main square in Vilnius; every year in
December the city’s main Christmas tree stands here.
Beside the cathedral is the 57-metre-high bell tower, of which
the lower tiers were once a part of the defences of the old
Lower Castle.
