‘Photography is just my thing’
What started as a hobby, turned out to be a way to
make a living for Ivelin Aleksandrov. The 28-year old
Bulgarian Art & Technology student is trying to make
a career as a photographer. Photography is also one of
the reasons why Aleksandrov came to Holland.
“I think photography is just my thing”, the Bulgarian says.
Aleksandrov bought his first quality camera when he was 25
years old. “It gives you a lot of freedom. You can go out on the
street, take pictures and speak with everyone you like. You
can decide your own boundaries en it gives you a different
view of the world.”
In the Netherlands, Aleksandrov has worked for Brinkman
Travel Agency, taken full pictures for restaurant Layla and
recently took photos for Sax during the HOI week. “I was
anxious to work for Sax, so I decided to take the step to the
magazine. I showed some of my work and I could start.” The
student earns some money with his work as a photographer.
And that’s quite necessary to pay for his study, but also for
his equipment. Because being a photographer is a rather
expensive hobby.
Students want to start school band in Deventer
Students Ana-Maria Turdean (Accounting) and Vahid
Yazdanpanah (Master Business Administration) are
having fun in the Netherlands. There is one thing
they’re missing though: music. They would love start
a band or form a choir in Deventer.
Yazdanpanah has only been in the Netherlands since August,
but already landed himself a place in a renowned Dutch choir.
He is a tenor singer in Euterpe, a classical choir led by director
Frank Diemen. He had to audition for it twice. “The first
audition went well
and I thought that
was it. But I had to
do another audition
for the board members.
And now I’m
the only non-Dutch
person in a choir of
86 people.”
Turdean is also a
practiced singer. She
sang in a Romanian
choir for four years.
“We mainly sang
traditional music.
It required a lot of
practice, but it was

own ambitions. “Maybe I would like to have a photo studio
one day. Or become a news photographer. But not in a war
or anything. Sometimes you see it. Someone is hurt and a
photographer just stands there to take pictures. No, that’s not
me. I don’t really like this.” (WK)

The two music buffs
would like to come in
contact with Saxion
students or staff to
sing or perform. “Maybe
something like the
school band in Enschede.
But it doesn’t have
to be that big. I think
singing is a great way
to communicate. That can also be done with fewer people”,
Turdean says.
Neither student has a preference of genre. Yazdanpanah: “My
genre is classical, but I’m not restricting myself. We could
do a performance where everyone sings a song of their own
choice.” Turdean agrees. “I have a very eclectic music taste.
I like everyting from traditional folk to Lady Gaga.” (MvD)

Sinterklaas and ice skating
Thinking you might be bored the upcoming weeks? Think again. There are some activities
for international students that might be interesting to attend.
- 18 November Workshop Ice-skating at the Scheg (Deventer).
Organised by employees (lecturers) of the HBS. Costs
amount to about 5,50 euro (exclusive of hiring skates). International
students, who would like to join the workshop,

- 2 December -> Sinterklaas comes to town. Who? Sinterklaas,
or Saint Nicholas, is a Dutch festivity: it is a saint who

A joint project of International Office, Marketing
and International Mananagement en Hospitality
Business School, that is what Global Plaza will be
for international students. For now, it still is a
future plan. The founders are currently focussing
on a joint event calendar, “so there is one channel
for students to see what is being organised

enjoy this tradition, too. Saxion celebrates this, too, so
join this festivity in Deventer, Enschede or Apeldoorn. More

An event calendar is not yet in place, says Wesseling. “We are
waiting for the launch of the new Saxion website.” That doesn’t
mean there are no activities yet. The main goal is to improve
the reception and hosting of international students at Saxion.
Saxion’s different schools are working together on that point.
All events organised for internationals by MIM, HBS, LED and the
