In zijn boek Conceptual Art schrijft Tony Godfrey over dit werk:<br />

“In 1970 Mel Bochner published his Misun<strong>de</strong>rstandings (A Theory<br />

of Photography): an <strong>en</strong>velope containing one reproduction photograph<br />

and nine in<strong>de</strong>x cards, each with a quote from a famous author<br />

handwritt<strong>en</strong> on it. But the photograph was paradoxical: <strong>en</strong>titled<br />

Actual Size (Hand), it was a reproduction of an earlier work by<br />

Bochner: a photograph of the artist’s arm and hand printed to the<br />

exact size of his real arm and hand, relating to his measurem<strong>en</strong>t<br />

series. Here, reduced to the in<strong>de</strong>x card size, it was no longer the actual<br />

size, and, moreover, it was in negative. It was a ‘misun<strong>de</strong>rstanding’,<br />

if not a lie. The same was true of the quotes on the cards, for<br />

three of the nine had be<strong>en</strong> ma<strong>de</strong> up by Bochner himself. Tw<strong>en</strong>ty-five<br />

years later, to Bochner’s great amusem<strong>en</strong>t, nobody has worked out<br />

which ones are fake, and he is not telling. What mattered, as far as<br />

he was concerned, was not photography per se, but thinking about<br />

photography and how we use it. This was to be true of most<br />

Conceptual artists who used photography.”<br />

Verschill<strong>en</strong><strong>de</strong> <strong>conceptuele</strong> <strong>kunst</strong><strong>en</strong>aars hadd<strong>en</strong> e<strong>en</strong> fascinatie<br />

voor steekkaart<strong>en</strong> (o.a. Art & Language, Stanley Brouwn,<br />

Victor Burgin, Michael Harvey). Ze war<strong>en</strong> e<strong>en</strong> vorm van systematiser<strong>en</strong>,<br />

organiser<strong>en</strong>, ord<strong>en</strong><strong>en</strong> <strong>en</strong> classificer<strong>en</strong>. Het doel van<br />

e<strong>en</strong> kaart<strong>en</strong>systeem is het verzamel<strong>en</strong> <strong>en</strong> archiver<strong>en</strong>, met volledigheid<br />

als doel (‘alle plaats<strong>en</strong> waar ik sliep’). B<strong>en</strong>jamin Buchloh<br />

noem<strong>de</strong> het ‘e<strong>en</strong> esthetiek van <strong>de</strong> administratie’. Fluxus, daar<strong>en</strong>teg<strong>en</strong>,<br />

gebruikte ringmapp<strong>en</strong>, doz<strong>en</strong> <strong>en</strong> anthologieën, sam<strong>en</strong>gesteld<br />

met materiaal van diverse artiest<strong>en</strong>, met docum<strong>en</strong>t<strong>en</strong> in<br />

ongelijke format<strong>en</strong> <strong>en</strong> object<strong>en</strong> die dikwijls past<strong>en</strong> in e<strong>en</strong> <strong>en</strong>velop.<br />

Ze moest<strong>en</strong> <strong>de</strong> lezer verrass<strong>en</strong> <strong>en</strong> prikkel<strong>en</strong> <strong>en</strong> toond<strong>en</strong> dat<br />

het lev<strong>en</strong> fluï<strong>de</strong> is, vervangbaar, ongestructureerd <strong>en</strong> op<strong>en</strong> voor<br />

veran<strong>de</strong>ring. Met <strong>de</strong> vormgeving van Misun<strong>de</strong>rstandings zit Mel<br />

Bochner op het snijpunt tuss<strong>en</strong> Fluxus <strong>en</strong> <strong>conceptuele</strong> <strong>kunst</strong>.<br />
