In the Netherlands Ascension and Pentecost are days off.
During these days many people enjoy the countryside mostly
by bike (a tradition called ‘dauwtrappen’), or they visit one of
the many festivals.
On Ascension Day the Dutch celebrate the resurrection of Christ.
It takes place on a Thursday (this year on Thursday, May 13).
People often go out for a bicycle trip. But there are also activities
everywhere, such as jumble sales, parties and festivals. A
famous festival in Twente is Dauwpop, in the middle of the forest
in Hellendoorn. You find many artists there. More information:
www.dauwpop.nl.
Pentecost is also known for the festivals. On this day, the outpouring
of the Holy Spirit is celebrated. Ten days after Pentecost and Ascension
Day it falls on the 50th day of Easter (49 days after Easter). This year,
Pentecost is on the 23rd and 24th of May.
Most Dutch people have a day off during these days. Pinkpop is
the biggest annual festival on Pentecost with 60,000 visitors and
international performances. This year it is held for the 41st time.
The festival takes place one week after Pentecost. In the rural areas
like Bornerbroek (near to Almelo) locals organize ‘Pinksterfeesten’
(www.pinksterfeesten.nl). For two days, artists perform and the youth
organizes all kinds of games. (WvT)
European Business
School
Saxion will be starting a European Business School in September
2011. This is a new course for excellent Dutch and international
students. European Business School graduates will be inspiring
and stimulating employees for European businesses.
It is a first that five schools (ABO, MIM, AMA, HBS and FEM) of Saxion
work together on a course. The European Business School will be part
of the course International Business and Management Studies. Not
just anyone can start: there will be a screening, because of the limited
amount of places. Only 25 students will be allowed. Just one third of
them will be Dutch, another third of the students will be other Europeans
and the last third is meant for non-European students. This way
Saxion wants to ensure a large variety in the classes. New students
must be motivated and master the English language. Students will live
and study together on a campus, which is a first for Saxion. (WvT)
