VALENTINES DAY
VALENTINES DAY
Where does the celebrating of love
really come from? Red roses, chocolate
hearts, hugs and kisses. Why do
we celebrate a day we know so little
about? Way back in the 13oo’s there
was a poet called Geoffrey Chaucer.
In his poem “Parliament of Foules”
he links the tradition of courtly love
with the celebration of St. Valentine’s
feast day. The poem refers to the day
birds and humans come together to
find their soul mate on 14 February.
By this poem, he might have created
the lovely holiday we celebrate each
year. St Valentine was a man who
had spiritual responsibilities all over
the world. People would call upon
him to watch over their love life. He
is also the patron saint of engaged
couples and happy marriages. By
knowing this, we can say that he’s
the “Love-whisperer”. He is the
reason why boys get nervous on
14 February, because now the boys
have to give each girl a rose, love and
affection. Girls on the other hand are
either happy as can be or
heart broken, because no one likes
to be the girl that doesn’t get a rose.
At least Micheal made sure it didn’t
happen this year! On Friday the
12th of February, the Ovies looked
wonderful in their colourful clothes.
The day was memorable in many
ways. The Youth committee baked
cookies for the girls, the boys gave
each girl a red rose and afterwards
the boys charmed the girls with their
vocals. So we can say that Ovie-boys
know exactly how to make a girl feel
special. During break we had a dance
battle, some great music and the
smell of pizza changed the day to an
absolute feast! The teachers looked
wonderful with their red, white
and pink outfits spreading the love
around the school. We did a little research
about the schools in this area.
Overkruin was the only school that
wore civvies, got roses and cookies,
and so much more. We love
celebrating Valentine’s Day at this
wonderful school. This is just one of
the many perks that makes Overkruin
the best school ever.
VALENTYNSDAG IN DIE
DUITSE KLAS
Guten Tag en welkom by Valentynsdag
in die Duitse klas! Soos julle kan
sien het ons vet pret gehad en gaan
die Duitse leerders elke jaar groter en
beter met die bekende “hartjie-dag”
feesvieringe. ‘n Paar interessante
feite: Rose word as die internasionale
blom-simbool beskou en 85% van
alle vrouens in Duitsland neem die
leiding om hul lewensmaat uit te vra!
Daarby saam geniet Duitsers dit om
spesiale etes saam hul geliefde te
deel. Onder leiding van Dr. le Roux en
die Duitse leerders het ons
Valentynsdag ons klas “verskuif” en
ons dus in Duitsland tuis gemaak!
Du bist mein, ich bin dein.
I am yours, and you are mine
Des sollst du gewiss sein.
You can be sure it’s true
Du bist verschlossen
Into my heart, I’ve gotten you
in meinem Herzen;
Locked its lock, lost the key
Verloren ist das Schlüsselein.
So you’ll never get back out you see
Du musst immer drinne sein
