– This year, Amsterdam gay pride is larger than ever. Aside from the yearly pride, Amsterdam is also host to Pink Saturday this year. Pride has been upgraded to an XL-version: EuroPride. We spoke with Lucien Spee, managing director of the Amsterdam Gay Pride Foundation Ė uroPride én Roze Zaterdag én Gay Pride: hoe wordt ervoor gezorgd dat het elkaar niet ondersneeuwt? E uroPride,Pink Saturday and Gay Pride are all happening at the same time, how will you make sure each event will get their chance to shine? ‘We don’t really have a separate pride this year: it’s EuroPride. Every year, one of the participating pride organisations gets to host EuroPride, which then replaces the city’s regular pride event. Of course the separate parts of gay pride, such as the Canal Parade, will be part of EuroPride. It’s just got a different name. Our big opening is with Pink Saturday, on July 23rd.’ For you personally the pride will be extra special, won’t it? Veel mensen ‘That’s right, I’ll be getting married! On Pink Saturday at 1pm in the Vondelpark my partner and I will be saying our vows. I met him on Curaçao last year, when I was invited to visit their pride. I met him at the White Party at the Floris Hotel, and it was love at rst sight. He moved in with me two weeks later. We weren’t planning on getting married until later this year, but we’re celebrating 15 years of legalized gay marriage this year. We wanted to celebrate that anniversary with a real marriage, but couldn’t nd a couple who wanted to get married. When my colleague Anita suggested my partner and I should be the ones getting married, I was apprehensive. I don’t like being in the spotlight that much. But eventually we decided we wouldn’t mind getting married a few months earlier. I’m really looking forward to it, he’s the sweetest guy on the planet!’ The Amsterdam pride is known for its Canal Parade. Can you tell us about some other highlights? ‘Everyone should see the Human Rights Concert on July 24th on Dam Square. A huge 50-piece orchestra will play with national and international artists. It’s going to be spectacular. A lot of people want to know more about the origins of pride, what exactly we celebrate during pride and why it’s so important to us. So we’ll be showing the story of pride, from the Stonewall riots of 1969 to now, through dance and real-life footage. There will be performances by Trijntje Oosterhuis (the Dutch Eurovision entry of 2015), Berget Lewis, Shirma Rouse, Conchita Wurst (winner of Eurovision 2015), Tara McDonald and Barei (this year’s Eurovision entry from Spain). The day before it’s also very worthwhile to visit Dam Square, for a huge party including reworks from the Karasnapolsky hotel, DJs Don Diablo and Gregor Salto and performances by 2 Unlimited, Sharon Doorson and Rozalla. A great line-up! Of course Pink Saturday at the Vondelpark will be awesome too, with performances by Gare du Nord, O’G3NE, Anita Meijer, Sharon Doorson, Imca Marina and Mathilde Santing. We’re basically throwing a party that will last for two weeks straight.’ 221 019
