The Norwegian Ordinary Ship
Register (NOR)
The increase continues
Owners of recreational- and commercial vessels have
not taken time off this summer, but helped ensure
growth in the register.
TONE OLSEN RISNES, Department of Ship Registration, NMA
All Norwegian-owned vessels navigating along the Norwegian coastline
are represented in our domestic register. Vessels of 15 meters
and more are subject to mandatory registration, whereas vessels less
than 15 meters may be voluntarily entered. Before August had
ended, as many as 20 408 vessels were registered.
350 NEW REGISTRATIONS
During the last four months, 219 owners of pleasure vessels have
secured legal protection over their boats by registration in the NOR.
No other vessel types are equally represented among the new entries.
An additional 73 smaller workboats and 45 fishing vessels were
registered during the same period. The remaining 13 vessels were
well dispersed among other vessel types.
A total of 145 of the vessels were imported from abroad and had
not been registered in a foreign legal protection register before. 91
were previously unregistered Norwegian vessels and an additional 10
were unregistered newbuildings. As many as 24 were transferred
from the Norwegian Shipbuilding Register, a sub-division to the
NOR, upon completion.
WHAT MAY BE REGISTERED IN NOR?
Ships under construction in Norway and contracts for the construction
of ships in Norway may be entered. Registration is always voluntary
and conditional upon estimated length of the vessel to be 10 meters or
more. Upon delivery of the newbuilding or when it enters into service,
deletion from this chapter of the register must take place.
- Voluntary registration ensures legal protection for the parties
and their right to the newbuilding says Monika Borge, Head of the
Department of Ship Registration. In addition, it opens up for the
opportunity to take up loans with security in the registered ship
under construction or the shipbuilding contract.
The high newbuilding activity in Norway is clearly reflected in the
number of new registrations in the Shipbuilding Register. Overall, 97
new ships under construction or shipbuilding contracts were registered
in 2017. So far this year, this number has already reached 72. Sixteen
of the new entries were registered in April, 14 in May and 11 in June.
Registrations in the Shipbuilding Register are also searchable on
our free “ship search” online at www.sdir.no/en/shipsearch/. Limit
your search to «Ships under construction/contracts» and choose if
you wish to make a search of “shipbuilder/contract yard” or “No.”.
