one of the most marked events of the Peninsular War, one that
always reminded the Portuguese of the atrocities they invariably
associated with French occupation. On the other hand, the battle
of Porto was remembered by the French as a great military victory,
where the valour and humanity of the French soldiers was
once more confirmed and praised. The images discussed in this
article can be credited not just with reflecting this fundamental
difference, but with helping to shape the ways the disaster was
perceived and remembered by the Portuguese and the French.
