A REAL FUTURE The question of social justice is often discussed in Brazil. How can it be promoted, to improve the lot of the less fortunate members of the population? For the great majority of sociologists, educators and intellectuals the answer is education, seen as the key to developing a nation. Only through knowledge can a country grow, develop and provide true social justice and full exercise of citizenship. There are many challenges facing Brazilian education. Equal access to a good education, as well as to adequate nutrition and health care, has historically been denied to those on the lower rungs of society. The challenges to correct this situation are many, and efforts must start in the first years of life. Early childhood education plays a crucial role in the development of human and social capital and is one of the areas where the returns to the investments made by society are the greatest. To help correct this situation of neglect and underinvestment, the carnival association, or “samba school”, Beija-Flor of Nilópolis (officially named Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Beija-Flor de Nilópolis) promotes social projects to help children and youths in the Baixada Fluminense region of the state of Rio de Janeiro through the Julia Abrão David Daycare Center, the Abrão David School, the Nelson Abrão David Community Center and various projects in the area of sports (jiu-jitsu, soccer, handball and swimming) as well as culture and the arts (ballet, popular dance and carnival activities) aimed at children and youths. I had the opportunity to learn more about the important work done by Beija-Flor of Nilópolis to transform the lives of thousands of young people by giving them a chance for a brighter future. This is without mentioning the peace of mind their parents enjoy while at work, knowing their kids are receiving an excellent education in a caring environment, as all children need and deserve. I felt honored to be received by Maria de Lourdes Goulart, the director of the daycare center and school since their founding. She movingly told me some stories about her former students who she has seen become doctors, lawyers, teachers and military officers. I was impressed with the polite way I was received by the students, from the youngest to the oldest, and could see that this behavior is the result of the work 58 Revista Beija-Flor de Nilópolis www.beija-flor.com.br
