RESUMO
A intenção do presente artigo é mostrar como
documentos escritos e iconográficos são fontes
históricas equivalentes e complementares,
porque os textos engendram figuras e as imagens
transmitem textos. Vistos pelo historiador como
discursos/ narrativas, as imagens e textos precisam
ser analisados como um fragmento do passado,
sem qualquer pretensão de neutralidade, pois
atendem as condições sociais de produção de uma
dada época. Assim o estudo histórico das fontes
visuais não deve ser subestimado em relação
aos textos escritos sob a pena de se restringir a
apreensão do conhecimento histórico.

ABSTRACT
This article aims at showing how written and
iconographic documents are equivalent and
complementary historical sources, because texts
beget figures and images transmit texts. Perceived
by historians as discourse/narratives, images and
texts should be analyzed as a fragment of the past,
with no intention of neutrality since they meet the
social conditions of production in a given period.
Therefore, the historical study of visual sources
should not be underestimated in relation to written
texts, under the risk of restricting the historical
knowledge holding.
