O ENIGMA
BÉLA
TARR
abraça o pescoço do cavalo e chora. O porteiro
In the prologue, a story in short sentences and
broken lines says basically, “In Turin, on
January 3, 1899, Friedrich Nietzsche leaves
home, via Carlo Alberto number 6. Not far
off, a coachman loses his patience and
begins to whip a stubborn horse. Nietzsche
comes upon this scene and interrupts it, hugs
the horse’s neck and cries. The doorman of the
building takes Nietzsche back inside. There
he lies on a divan, quiet, without saying a
word, for two days. He lives ten more years
immersed in silence and madness, cared for
by his mother and sisters. We do not know
what happened to the horse”.
What is said before the first image is, strictly
speaking, the only story told in Bela Tarr’s The
Turin Horse (2011). Afterward, minimal action
and virtually no speaking: isolated in a nonplace
and non-time, with a horse that stays
obstinately in the stable, a coachman and his
daughter silently cling to trivial routines in the
midst of a storm that appears to be the world
coming to an end: each day they cook two
potatoes, sit at the table to eat, sit in front of
the window to watch the storm outside.
“A maior parte dos filmes produzidos hoje segue o
mesmo padrão: ação, corta, ação, corta. Tudo o
Inventamos a ficção a partir daí”.
“Most films produced today have the same
pattern: action, cut, action, cut. All they see is
the external action. A man standing there waiting
in a corner could be a story. The story told
in my films is in the image,” in the black and
white texture, the prolonged takes, the slow
camera movement, because, insists the director,
“the story told in a film is not limited to
what happens between its characters. The
image, the different sounds and the context tell
stories. Cinema is made with everything
around us, and a film only truly lives when it is
able to show each tiny facet of the scene for
the viewer to experience.” The point of departure
of The Turin Horse, he explained last
February during the Berlin Film Festival, “is
very simple: we were looking for an answer to
the question, ‘What happened to the horse
after this incident?’. László Krasznahorkai
wrote more a tale than a screenplay around
this idea. From there we invented the fiction.”
as pessoas.
The invention seems inspired by the tradition
of woodcutting. What moves while the people
wait in a corner is the sound and light –
more shadow than light; the Hungarian director’s
films mirror perfectly the Chinese ex -
pression for film: electric shadows. The Turin
Horse, 30 long takes in a little over two hours
and forty minutes of projection follows the
path set by Werckmeister Harmonies (2000),
39 takes in two and a half hours, and by
Satan’s Tango (1994), 150 takes in seven
and a half hours. “What I want in my films is
to observe people for a long time. It’s not me
that observes, but the camera, the cinematographic
tool, which has an objective view.
Film is different than literature; it only shows
what is seen from the objective view. We create
a sort of fiction, but nonetheless there is a
mirror of life.”
recusa a comer e a andar. Uma recriação do que
teria acontecido ao cavalo que Nietzsche defendeu
de maus-tratos em Turim, em 1889, no início da
perda de suas faculdades mentais. Urso de Prata e
prêmio FIPRESCI, Festival de Berlim 2011.
An old farmer and his daughter have a dull routine living
in a secluded rural area. The two gaze out their window
over changes in the world around them: a neighbor
carries on about the decline and collapse of the
world and a group of gypsies comes through the area.
Meanwhile, their farm horse stops eating and refuses to
walk. A recreation of what could have happened to the
horse that Nietzsche defended from mistreatment in
Turin in 1889, when he began to lose his mind. Silver
Bear and FIPRESCI prize, Berlin Film Festival 2011.
BIOGRAFIA
BIOGRAPHY
Nasceu em Pécs, na Hungria, em 1955. Pensava
Hungarian School of Theatrical and Cinematic
Arts.
recente, ganhou o grande prêmio do júri e o
prêmio FIPRESCI do Festival de Berlim.
Born in Pécs, Hungary in 1955. He planned to be
a philosopher and make films as a passtime, but at
age 16 his amateur films – most of them documentaries
about the urban poor and workers – caught the
attention of Balázs Béla Studios, which decided to
produce his first film, Family Nest (1979). Soon afterward
he began studying at the Hungarian School of
Theatrical and Cinematic Arts. Continuing his characteristic
long takes in black and white, he made The
Prefab People (1982), his first project with professional
actors. It took seven years to complete the filming
of Satan’s Tango, (1994), which is over seven
hours in length. With The Man from London (2007),
he entered competition in the Cannes Film Festival,
