Hungarian School of Theatrical and Cinematic
Arts.
Born in Pécs, Hungary in 1955. He planned to be
a philosopher and make films as a passtime, but at
age 16 his amateur films – most of them documentaries
about the urban poor and workers – caught the
attention of Balázs Béla Studios, which decided to
produce his first film, Family Nest (1979). Soon afterward
he began studying at the Hungarian School of
Theatrical and Cinematic Arts. Continuing his characteristic
long takes in black and white, he made The
Prefab People (1982), his first project with professional
actors. It took seven years to complete the filming
of Satan’s Tango, (1994), which is over seven
hours in length. With The Man from London (2007),
he entered competition in the Cannes Film Festival,
and with The Turin Horse (2011), his most recent
film, he won the grand jury prize and the FIPRESCI
award at the Berlim Film Festival.
