Moscow’s Russian Ballet Theatre presents The
Nutcracker, at 9.30 p.m., on 14th January, at the
Olga Cadaval Cultural Centre. This ballet has
become a Christmas tradition all over the world
and, along with “The Sleeping Beauty” and “Swan
Lake”, is Tchaikowsky’s most famous ballet.
It had its première in 1892, at the legendary
Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, with the original
choreography by Lev Ivanov and libretto by
Marius Petipa. The story is inspired by E.T.A.
Hoffman’s famous tale “The Nutcracker and the
Mouse King” published in 1819, although the plot
that was to be used in Tchaikowsky’s ballet years
later was actually derived from Alexander Dumas’s
adaptation of the original text.
The story takes place in Germany at Christmas, at
the house of the respectable judge Sahlbaum. The
couple and their children – Clara, Louise, and Fritz
– welcome the arrival of their relatives, among
whom is the old Drosselmayer, an eccentric
bachelor and lover of magic. He brings Clara a very
special present, a wooden nutcracker. Fascinated
with her new toy, the little girl falls asleep with the
toy in her arms. In the middle of the night, Clara
wakes up: the toys come to life, and she is pursued
by an army of rats. There is a battle between rats
and soldiers, led by the Nutcracker. Later, the little
girl, the toy and Drosselmayer go in search of the
Mouse King in the Land of Snow and other magic
places, where they live extraordinary adventures.
Finally, the dream ends, and Clara wakes up to find
herself at home next to her toy. “The Nutcracker”
is, therefore a tale that speaks of the everlasting
longing for lost childhood, and of the contrast
between the reality of the adult world and the children’s
dream world. Thanks to its colourful scenes,
to the adventures of the characters and the
extraordinary imagination they represent, and to
Tchaikowsky’s unforgettable music, “The
Nutcracker” has become one of the most often
performed ballets in the world.
