That is, to maintain and preserve theintelectual production of the nation and, of that being an institution where youwould have access to information, having as a basis, memory, culture andpreservation. From this established point of a National Library, that variesaccording to social, political, economic and cultural structure of each country, weoutline the history of the National Library in Brazil, since its origin to the presentdays. Analysis of the growth and the use of the collection, also of the categoriesof the users, are the basis to understand the proportion of the double role thatthe institution performs and the consequences to the preservation of a book as awitness of memory. This is complete by some questioning around theeducational problems, political and cultural, beside being responsable for thesituation of the many Brazilian Libraries.Key Word: Library; Memory; National Library (Brazil)
