TANTO MARHelena Cortez-Pinto (POR)Há 20 anos, na praia de Copacabana,meu primeiro dia no Brasil, fui avisadapelo segurança do hotel que era “perigosodeixar a toalha na areia… podemroubar”. Nessa tarde, no Pão de Açúcar,uma simpática carioca, com famíliaem Portugal, ofereceu-me boleia parao hotel “ não vá em transportes …podemassaltar” .Era então a imagem que tinha da cidade– bela, mas perigosa.Como se diz em Portugal “cautelas ecaldos de galinha não fazem mal a ninguém”,assim achei mais prudente, nodia seguinte, ir num tour a Petrópolise arriscar passear à noite no calçadãocom um grupo: pôr do sol maravilhoso,churrasco delicioso em Ipanema eregresso tranquilo à noite ao hotel.Mudei o paradigma – bela, mas amável!A partir do 3º dia, comecei a visitar oRio sem me preocupar com mitos urbanos,fui ao Centro, visitei museus,apanhei a barca para a ilha de Paquetá,onde aluguei uma bicicleta, à noite fuia um show de Bossa Nova em Leblon,e finalmente senti-me em casa (casacom um cheirinho tropical!).Tenho voltado ao Brasil regularmentee algumas vezes ao Rio, cada vez commais prazer, e naturalmente que as minhasexperiências são orientadas pelosmeus interesses e pelos meus gostos.Considero que uma visita ao Rio temque ter alguns pontos obrigatórios. Porexemplo, se for ao Centro, não deixe detomar um cafezinho no faustoso ambienteBelle Époque da Confeitaria Colombo- o décor recorda os antigos cafésde luxo de Lisboa e Porto (que têmvindo a desaparecer), e imagine Eça deQueiroz em animada polêmica comMachado de Assis, visite o Real GabinetePortuguês de Leitura e lembre-secomo Fernando Pessoa “que a minhapátria é a língua portuguesa”, aproveitee passeie na vibrante zona envolvente,vá ao Museu de Arte Moderna espantar-secom a arquitetura de Reidy e admiraros Portinaris e Di Calvacantis.Se quiser sair do Rio, apanhe uma barcapara Niterói e visite o belíssimo Museude Arte Contemporânea (talvez amaior obra de Niemeyer), e não percaa inacreditável vista do Museu para aBaía de Guanabara. Melhor vista, medisseram, será de parapente com saltoda Pedra da Gávea…se for corajoso enão tiver vertigens, claro.Regresse ao Rio, é inevitável, e atravessede trem elétrico a floresta do Tijucapara subir ao Corcovado e talvez tenhasorte de ver um beija-flor, e, claro, pegueo bondinho do Pão de Açúcar. Setiver tempo e estiver saudoso da suajuventude, curta ao fim da tarde a FeiraHippie de Ipanema.Mas, para mim, o mais importante doBrasil são os amigos que fiz, sejam gaúchos,baianos, paranaenses, paulistas,cariocas ou cidadãos do mundo. Naverdade, como disse Emily Dickinson,“o meu patrimônio são os meus amigos”…E neste regresso ao Rio de Janeiro, prometoaos meus amigos cariocas, comlicença do Chico Buarque, “trazer urgentementealgum cheirinho a alecrim”.COMINGBACK TO RIOArun Sanyal (USA)This year, once again, I have the opportunityto return to Rio. Ah, Rio..Rio... the name conjures visions ofendless sunny days, beautiful beacheswith beautiful people, football,samba and the carnival. Evenwhen I looked out of the airplanewindow and saw Rio for the firsttime I felt a connection and knewI would come back to it again andagain.I remember Rio in the early hours ofthe morning… young people returningfrom a long night of partying,young and old making their way towelcome the sun as it looked overthe horizon at Sugarloaf Mountain.I remember Rio in rush hour… acrazy crush of cars reminding methat beneath the fun loving lifestyleis a serious urban metropolis,a business hub and a vital part ofBrasil’s growing economic engine.I remember swinging wildly in anAtlantic breeze as I took the cablecar to the top of the iconic sugarloaf…a gentle reminder of nature’spower as I looked down on thisamazing city of man. I rememberlooking across the city to Christ theRedeemer watching over the cityand promising myself that I mustget up there to get “his” perspective.Unfortunately, that was notto be. By the time I arrived at thetop of the hill, the redeemer wasshrouded in clouds and a cold rainwhipped by a chilly breeze blockedout the city. I read this as a messagethat I was not yet ready for “his”perspective and that I would returnagain for that privilege. Funny, bythe time I got back to the bottom,it was warm and rain free again. Iremember Rio in the evening... sparklinglights, music and the incrediblecuisine of Brasil. Most of all,I remember the warm hospitality Ireceived in Rio. I remember rekindlingold friendships and makingnew friends over laughter andchilled beer on warm sunny days.I also remember my friends tellingme not to wander off and to watchout for crime and criminals. I hearthings are much better now.Things are looking up for Rio. 2014will bring the world cup and 2016the Olympics. I look forward tosnagging a ticket to watch a gameat the Maracanã stadium and to seethe transformation of Barra da Tijuca,future home of the Olympicvillage. One day, I may even experiencethe carnival. For now, I willlook forward to a few days of sun,sand, laughs and scientific interchangeat the Brazilian congress ofliver diseases in October. •10 | Boletim SBHBoletim SBH | 11
